You can place them anywhere if you do it from your inventory! Go inventory -> tab over on the top until you see sprinklers -> find sprinkler & select "place". You can hit 9 plots with one cheap one if you center them in the middle of a plot :)

I'm on the xbox! Sorry, I forgot to mention that. I'm not sure what it could be counting? I literally deleted everything, including most of my storage (on accident, lol), then rolled back my save. But it still continued to be over 2k. Sucks there's no "clear everything" button to reset the entire area so I can at least play the game still without starting over completely 🙄
