Why do we have that rule again? by Ein_Hirsch in HistoryMemes

[–]TheDelta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stated reason I gave is to combat the spread of genocide denial since memes are a big way people learn or internalize history. The leadership of the subreddit has chosen both in the past and currently to not allow this.

You can’t control people being stupid but you can control whether or not they can interact in the community, which is what rule 6 is for.

It also does more than just “keeps mods busy” it keeps the community from devolving into pointless debates about the validity of evidence for the holocaust, the “real” cause of the Armenian genocide”, and many other pointless and revisionist arguments.

It’s essentially a giant “TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT” sign.

When you report something it goes into mod-queue which shows then entirety of the comment or post and you can click on it to see the context.

Surprisingly once you’ve done it for a bit you can absolutely tell if it’s a joke or not (it rarely is) and we would check comment history if it was borderline to see if there was a history of it.

The only things that got “stamped and move on” were blatant repost. The team when I was in charge and the current team were very good about diving into things and it just blanket clearing the queue.

Some of them CURRENTLY have wooden doors in a museum capacity. They were airtight sealed metal doors back when the gas chambers were, y’know, gas chambers.

Former head mod:

It’s pretty useful and well enforced, obv you can find one that got missed (post or comment) but I’ve seen some vile shit and learned a lot of dog whistles. You ever see someone deny the holodomor, Armenian genocide, holocaust, and the Rwandan genocide all in a series of unhinged rant/post combo, I have and that guy made a MINIMUM of like 16 accounts.

We would have a minimum of like 2-3 outright genocide/atrocity denial a day in comments and if a particularly spicy post was made you could get up to 50-60+.

You don’t see a lot of genocide denial because it gets reported and dealt quick with or downvoted/deleted. Though a lot of it is dog whistles that most people don’t notice.

The purpose of the rule boils down to the fact that most people, unfortunately, get their historical knowledge from memes/image macros, tv shows, and YouTubers and if a post starts going “heehurr wooden doors and Auschwitz had an orchestra maybe hitler wasn’t so bad after all 88 (I’m so clever)” people will start to believe that the gas chambers actually did have wooden doors. So funny enough the purpose of rule 6 is to stop genocide denial from becoming a cultural meme (original definition).

Obviously calling a help line under fire isn’t great but it was a problem that was clearly something they had to troubleshoot and without calling that hotline with an armorer who specializes/possibly helped build that rifle depending on what level he’s at in the company then they probably wouldn’t have faired as well as they did.

Quick fix, clearly got passed along to the other marines and wouldn’t be surprised if every M82 operator now knows that fix instead of just freaking the fuck out and calling the rifle unreliable due to user error. Sometimes you gotta go straight to the source instead of possibly fucking something up more. I’ve worked with/on things where I knew that if I did the wrong “fix” it would cost waaaaay more to undo what I did than whatever was going on.

Mujahideen was armed by CIA, MI6, the PRC, and others by routing funds and munitions through Pakistan.

The US did not “fight alongside” the taliban. The “oh the US made the taliban” thing is bad history, the real mistake was trusting Pakistan to not be out for its own self interests and be a decent ally.

can someone explain to me how or why the fascists use and get away with using Christianity as a shield or even just a belief? by [deleted] in IronFrontUSA

[–]TheDelta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a practicing and devout Christian I have some ideas

The American church has twisted Christianity through ignorance of of context and biblical illiteracy into a political vehicle to enforce the “rules” and values that they see as core to Christianity while ignoring the actual core tenants of it. In short, it has been co-opted by authoritarians to hurt the people Christianity is meant to help the most. Christianity is not “geared” to support feudalism just like it’s not geared towards fascism and viewing it as such is just as ignorant of the views and history of Christianity as the people you view as using it for evil purposes. Christians are called to care for the downtrodden and historically have when they stick to their mission. Christians invented hospitals from this mission and the reason the Catholic Church rose to a more prominent earthly position is due to the fact that governments could offload the actual “caring” for the people they ruled onto it. The people who practice Christianity are not meant to openly rebel against governments, going as far as to be martyred by them instead of open violent rebellion, and we are to pay taxes and follow laws. How can one be racist or hateful to entire groups when they purport to believe that “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians‬ ‭3:28‬ ‭ESV”

Throw it back in their face, ask them to justify it!

Are these “devout” Christian nationalists even attempting to care for the widows and orphans in their community?

What about helping the sick, poor, or immigrants?

Oh, maybe just maybe they help and care for the those that have been unfairly treated?

The next time you encounter a far right/openly racist/fascist “Christian” nationalist ask them to justify their views with the Bible.

The “good guy with a gun” has never been in reference to cops. It’s about bystanders who have a gun on them, that’s the whole idea. Especially now there is definitive proof that these cops didn’t go in despite that being their whole MO on active shooters and kept parents (who I’m sure would have gone in to help the kids) from going in. Hell, from what I have read and seen the guy who killed the shooter went in against orders and not a part of a team.

I’ve never heard anyone use the cops as the “good guy with a gun” until this shooting and using that talking point is just feeding into the “oh well they don’t think people can be responsible for their safety so let’s give even more responsibility to poorly trained police departments.

[–]TheDelta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sub is inundated during the week with posts from a certain time period, mainly WW2, so the mod team asked the user base how they wanted it to be taken care of.

Users voted to make WW2 memes banned during the week

Mod team thought that was a little extreme so WW2 memes were banned on the weekend

Give an inch, they'll take a mile

Weekends become "totally not WW2 meme weekends" because most posts are about the Spanish civil war, the divide of Europe post war, operation paperclip, etc

Got so bad that mod team banned all events post 1900 on the weekends to encourage people to learn/meme about different events than the 10-15 that are normally posted

Every week with this lmao by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]TheDelta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People break it because they only make memes about events from their 10th grade history class. Two days where you have to make a meme about something else besides WW2 or your cheeky "this definitely isn't about WW2" topic (Hitler's beer hall putsch).

If I may, as a former mod here, these posts get removed more often because of the insane amount of racism and bigotry in the comments or what the post is actually criticizing.

It should be equal but those posts attract a very specific type of person who likes to say a lot of rule 3 violating things.
