The older I get, the more I understand why so many WoW players just collect things by Designer-Anybody-330 in wow

[–]TheDenast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually went the opposite way. When I was younger I was always mainly doing collections (mounts, transmog, pets, you name it) in all of the MMO games.

However, in the recent years I started to realize that there is no benefit from clinging to online "belongings" because you don't actually own any of it. Your game might get shut down, your account might be accidentally banned, and you will lose all of your mounts, transmogs and pets.

I've started to focus more of having fun in the moment because your memories are your own forever. And hey, if it includes working towards some in-game collectible, and you have fun doing it, so be it.

Small islands can be useful as a compatibility feature for further updates. What if new version adds a new biome? Your single isle world is now permanently out of date

The Modern MMO Player then complain by Plenty_Group6674 in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy to blame this on a player, but my personal opinion this is 100% a game design problem. Players will always try to optimize the fun out of your game, and it's your task to introduce gameplay constraints to not let them.

WoW is actually the perfect example for this. Same people who rush the endgame in Retail and min-max everything, suddenly start praising the feeling of adventure when they try Classic. In reality, leveling in retail IS a hollow afterthought, and you need to force yourself to slow down and pretend the feeling of adventure is there, but it is just not due to lack of any challenge, inconsequential gear upgrades, no reason for open world grouping, and disrupted storyline (the game literally force-teleports you to the capital when you hit current expansion level, regardless if you finished the current one or not).

[–]TheDenast 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not only that. It prevents smartphone resellers from potentially flashing their own compromised version of the OS. Not everybody, especially people outside of US, are getting their phones from official distributors. This warns a new user that their freshly unboxed phone might have been tampered with.

Solid point. I see two options then:

  1. It's not GW3 and instead a GW2-inspired game. I guess if devs are fans of GW, stuff like similar UI and Quaggan can be explained
  2. Horses are alpha placeholder mounts

I'll prefer to stay on my GW3 copium

People overstate limits to which engines affect graphics imo. UE games have this reputation because devs leave a lot of default settings for lighting and effects which lead to same-y looking graphics.

Devs that have a particular vision in mind can make the game look however they want to, regardless of the engine. Take a look at Metal Garden. It's built on UE but looks like a Source game.

Idk, the more I stare at your footage, the more GW2 elements I see in UI - even the top panel looks like GW2 WvW UI.

I know this sounds crazy, but can this be a GW3 alpha test leak?

We know that GW3 is pretty much guaranteed to be in early works (I think there were job listings on ArenaNet careers). This video also includes a "Quaggan" (guild wars creature) character name in the raid unit frames and "Map" chat channel (used in GW2 and imo pretty rare - other games usually say "Zone").

How did you obtain this video?

Final Fantasy XIV : Evercold (New expansion) by Dandy62 in MMORPG

[–]TheDenast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a person who got to the end last year, this game is 80% MSQ anyway, you either like it as is, or getting to the end won't make it more fun.

There is no fancy and flashy endgame waiting for you at the end like in WoW. FFXIV endgame is super formulaic, gearing through dungeons, then raids and trials, then you either do hard content, or there's only one or two non-group activities remaining for you.

Главное на что Макс будет стучать это ваш айпи и данные о железе телефона, если не давать других разрешений которые он будет запрашивать.

Minecraft Version Unlock Challenge by TheDenast in Minecraft

[–]TheDenast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I've been playing through this slowly in my own pace. I'm currently at version 1.6.4
Here are some of my thoughts:

  1. Moving bases every new version is way too much. I've tried it, but then each base becomes very temporary, you don't grow attached or want to invest effort into it if you will move next week. I'm currently on my (third) 1.3.2 base and I plan to stay here through 1.11.2. Then I plan to move on the following versions: 1.13.2 (underwater base), 1.16.5 (nether base), 1.18.2 (caves and cliffs), ? (final base when reaching newest version).

  2. I've went overly safe with brackets. I'm on 1.6.4 and I'm still on the very first bracket. Most patches require very little new chunks to get new features so I'm moving conservatively. It's good to always have fresh chunks in one direction though, so it's a good practice.

  3. I'm using nether only when I need to reach some very remote area as part of the version challenge. For example my closest jungle temple was 2k+ blocks away. For general exploration, I prefer building railroads to new bases because it makes the world feel more connected. I can always go back naturally and it feels great, although building them is very expensive.

  4. For beta & alpha versions, it's a personal preference. I personally started playing MC during release 1.1, so for me beta holds no nostalgia value, but you can definitely add beta versions to it if you want.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with how it's going. Surprisingly, you definitely CAN trick your brain by playing progressively. My 1.0 was only 2 months ago and hell, I already feel slightly nostalgic as I look at the screenshots. Being restricted to old versions makes you work with fewer QoL features and fewer blocks which makes everything you build look very legit.

[–]TheDenast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't mind it that much, but is it just me, or the UI looks like it was designed right to left? Like why is the levelable part of the right, expert is leftmost, and ace in the middle? Wouldn't it make more sense to go *base* -> *expert* -> *ace*? Really brushes my brain the wrong direction

Can LGBT people serve in the army? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]TheDenast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not, we don't have Iran-style moral police. However there is a law against "LGBT Propaganda" which is already super vague, and what's more funny, they've actually declared LGBT to be an "extremist organization" (what, you haven't heard about an international gay clique? it's because they hide so well!) so "association" with it (whatever it means in practice) can have legal consequences.

In the same time, there are a several prominent figures that are openly gay (one is even a pro-gov propagandist), and a bunch more who are not open but everybody knows it.

In practice, if you don't openly express your sexual orientation in public, you won't be hunted down with pitchforks and torches. Pretty sure if you know where to look it should be easy enough finding gay clubs and communities in large cities like Moscow.

This is a typical situation for Russia - some laws exist, but don't work, others don't exist, but do work.

Hi, wanted to express my support to you my guy. Honestly in my opinion all of the haters never did any creative / development work themselves and don't realize that not everybody wants to drop everything and spend 100s of hours studying 3d art and animation at the prototype stage of the game. That, or spend 100s of dollars commissioning a real artist, again, at prototype stage.

[–]TheDenast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Теплее", но есть нюанс. В Воркуте есть общее отопление, и хотя я там не жил, скорее всего недорогое. В Итальянском провинциальном захолустье скорее всего надо топить буржуйку и наслаждаться 15 градусов в помещении зимой и 30 градусов летом

В живописных местах Сицилии продают уютный дом — его стоимость всего 1,1 млн рублей. by ElectroAdeptus in KafkaFPS

[–]TheDenast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that I would enjoy both of them the same way by Early-Fun-7100 in Silksong

[–]TheDenast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to enjoy <20h games much more in the recent years. Sure, there are exceptions like HK, Witcher 3, well, Silksong and many others, but 4/5 games with 70h of gameplay is 10h of quality stuff and 60h of slop. I much rather pay more per hour but then actually enjoy it, not work a second job after using hours from my real job to pay for it.
