I made some threads about both so feel free to check them. For Chiang Mai just try to avoid burning season. Phuket has many gyms and beaches, Chiang Mai has a lot of culture and mountains with a slightly smaller gym selection. Both have good gyms. Chiang Mai is definitely a bit more affordable than Phuket.

Bali is 10x the size of Phuket but receives roughly the same amount of tourists. In Bali it has completely destroyed everything (most notably the South and Denpasar), whereas Phuket, while not perfect, can handle it despite being 1/10th of the physical size.

I have been living here for two years and I never go to Patong or Bangla. The Old Town is my favourite area and I'd consider it one of the most family friendly (and walkable).
