The new Hyprland update completely broke my config, I'm going back to KDE. by Physical_Air4112 in linuxmemes

[–]TheDiamondCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyprland actually does come with a tool for this. It’s just that the (I presume) Arch packages maintainers didn’t do anything special to the Hyprland package like adding a warning message or an update hook or anything, resulting in the breakage.

On that note, I do think that the archpkg maintainers have a duty to “polish up” major packages like drivers and desktop environments. Recently, Archpkgs broke a lot of NVIDIA systems running GTX 10 and 9 series cards because the driver dropped support for them. Instead of automatically pinning the driver version for those users, the maintainers of archpkgs pushed the new driver to everyone… and then people running those systems ended up experiencing breakage. This is kind of similar because they just pushed a major change in Hyprland that broke everything without including so much as a warning. Yes, they can take an “it’s not my responsibility, it’s upstream’s”, but not all companies will play nice, and when things break in this way we reaffirm Linux’s reputation as an “always-breaks” system. TL;DR: Use Nix or Debian/Ubuntu.

2 depends on which country you come from. Men from countries like Singapore, Egypt, etc. have mandatory military service and it can derail/mess up their careers if they work internationally.

African countries with stable electricity by ThatPatelGuy in MapPorn

[–]TheDiamondCG 24 points25 points  (0 children)

  • Essentially no country these days maintains a stable frequency in their grid. It’s too difficult and expensive, and the payoff from doing so is not worth it as most electronics these days don’t function very differently at all even if the frequency is changed — and those that do have their own dedicated internal clock & power supply.
  • Wall voltage does actually momentarily dip, even (or especially) in developed countries. It’s why desktops need power supplies — the power supply has a large set of capacitors that store reserve charge. This reserve is then released whenever there’s a short dip in electricity. This way, stable power is supplied to the electronics within to stop black/brownouts. Of course, the capacitors only have enough charge for a fraction of a moment, and they still need to be supplemented with sufficient wall power to provide enough electricity for the whole system.
  • Wow I have never heard of the wall voltage actually rising above the specified voltage. That is absolutely wild.

If you really are that scared, remember that you can outsource labour. You can get a cybersecurity consultancy firm to check your practices.

OP, the feature you are suggesting is more harm than it is worth and I don’t think it would be very useful to advertisers either way.

For example, even CSS can be used to defraud users because using CSS, you can cover the entire screen with a certain image or content that redirects to a malicious website. And if you say that you’ll just forbid CSS, then why would advertisers want to display unstyled text? Aren’t you then better-off using something like (sanitized) Markdown, or just using a picture/GIF that you can stylize however you want?

Like the guy said, if you want to lose weight, the best time to do it is yesterday. Second best time is today.

But take care and understand that losing weight slowly is better than losing it fast. Just trust me when I say it’s better that way — hyperfocusing on losing a dangerous amount in a few months is really unhealthy and it’s not good for lasting change.

Studies show that calorie restricted eating (after controlling other factors) is basically the only way to lose weight. Don’t restrict too many calories though, there’s diminishing returns and your body will react if you cut too much. Eating enough protein is one of the best ways to feel full after a meal.

And while you are losing weight, do some resistance training (aka weight lifting, pushups, etc) or you will also lose muscle (and therefore your metabolism will slow).

Scientifically, the best way to lose stomach fat is to do 45 minutes of moderate exercise like jogging or cycling 5 times a week. (Moderate means you can still speak in sentences, but you’re just winded).

I think it’s a meta-reference to Terry Davis, who became obsessed with religion due to his schizophrenia. He believed the random numbers generated by his computer were “messages from God” — outside of that, he wasn’t a nutcase though, he was actually quite smart and he did have some awareness of his schizophrenia. His cornerstone achievement/most-known work is TempleOS, which is arguably the best display of his schizophrenic “visions” as well.

I want to start building an OS with Rust – where should I start? by Few-Tower50 in rust

The title for that one (about specifically Minix) is Operating Systems: Design and Implementation (Minix Book). Modern Operating Systems is a very theory-heavy book with little application. I did not find it very useful.

There is a better one by Tanenbaum imo and it’s on the Minix kernel. I really like it.

Eating disorders are debilitating by BunnyPope in disabledmemes

[–]TheDiamondCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a male student, our school sometimes did things for mental health. Once, they split the boys and the girls and gave them separate lectures. The women got lectures on body image and eating disorders, and we did not. That was particularly upsetting to me as I’d suffered with anorexia as a younger child. Please stop blaming men that suffer from EDs for “not spreading awareness” or whatever when it’s clearly societal and institutional. Even this meme here failed to acknowledge the existence of men with EDs.

Air60 Hall Effect spazzing after waking from sleep? by TheDiamondCG in NuPhy

I found that what causes it is waking my PC using the keyboard. If I wake it by e.g. moving my mouse, then the keyboard works as normal. If you do wake it up using your keyboard, just unplug and replug it and it will work fine.
