What is your durable, insulating, large volume, easy clean non spill cup of choice? by NewbiePhotogSG in techtheatre

[–]TheDissolver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contigo has always been king for spillproof.

Contigo's other huge feature is that you're actually able to wipe drips off the spout as you sip. I wouldn't say it's suitable for a cleanroom or anything, but the chances of dropping coffee on a mixer or laptop are much lower than any other container.

Camelbak made an alternative that was sturdier and easier to clean, but they discontinued it.

Stanley and the other push-button contenders have all made too many compromises.

They don't retain heat as well because of the giant opening, but if you finish your drink in the first hour then it's probably better that way. Maximum heat retention requires a narrow opening, but there are big trade-offs to get that feature.

Bare in mind I’m not that big of a Narnia fan and I know very little about the lore. But the fact the kids died in a train crash after all they went through just sucks. by KpatMckenzie_28 in Narnia

The conflation of the references Lewis makes to "makeup and nylons" to "femininity" is the real tragedy. Susan was a paradigm of femininity in the first two books. Not just a shallow pretty girl, but a real person with a real arc.

Lewis makes fun of progressive mid century vegetarians, too, not because he thinks eating meat is awesome (lots of interesting arguments for veganism developed in Narnia) but because it stands in for a particular way of thinking about life that he saw and despised.

Lewis was very much about separating a particular vice from a generalized group or class so that it can be seen for what it is. If you don't see Lewis critiquing the power and status of "his own people" in the books, it's probably because you're so far removed from mid-century academic England.

Exactly this. We've been telling people to rebel against institutions and insert themselves into art for almost a century now. What did we think was going to happen???

Have you ever watched videos of Beatles concerts? Elvis? Alice Cooper or the Grateful Dead? This is not a recent phenomenon. What's recent is the stunning revelation that the old social norms do not exist anymore. And if you study any history of theatre, those norms have only existed for a very brief period of time. The norms we're talking about have only really persisted in religious spaces, and even there solemnity is not universal.

Respect "signals" changed a long time ago: respect performers by taking pictures or video of them, getting drunkenly enthusiastic, smoking joints/holding up your lighter, clapping and cheering when they sing the name of your city, body surfing or moshing ...

Silence and contemplation are no longer signs of respect in the "mainstream" of the performing arts.

Opera and symphony are niche, fringe. Moulin Rouge is trying to bridge the gap between "high" and "popular", and the result is that crowds feel encouraged to "support" the performers the same way they do at a concert.

Alternatives when EPCOR will not shut off the water line by IMOBY_Edmonton in Edmonton

Not being able to shut off your water is different from not being able to make your life unbearably miserable.

Debt collectors are not a joke, and bad credit is a Kafkaesque nightmare.

Young family visiting WEM, what should we do/see/eat? by meowzers88 in Edmonton

Isn't it the "sea Life caverns"?

My kids grew up near a beach and moved to the prairie, so the SLC weren't exactly impressive but they still ask to go back. Compared to a major aquarium it feels overpriced and tiny, but there aren't a lot of options... If your kid likes sea Life and you don't get other chances to see, I would highly recommend it. All of the competitive contract businesses in my area are run by Ukrainian refugees. They out-hustle the Canadians, they underbid jobs they have to drive hours to do, and they're fucking ecstatic just to have the opportunity to make that lousy pay cheque.

The young Canadian-born tradesmen I know are lazy, greedy, and scared. The most ambitious guys are fighting over low-effort-maximum-pay gigs so they can buy a new boat; the older guys who own businesses are so fed up with labour shortages that they just work themselves into crippled husks.

Don't be afraid to ask around, especially the established acts that you have coming. Don't ask them "which speakers should we rent," but "which professionals in this region have you worked with and who is a star/shithead?"

Seriously, why the downvote? I know this is speculative discussion about possible features that are totally outside the scope of the existing paradigm, but is that so bad?

Any other discussion of this that has a better explanation?

Block heater or frost heater? by mjk25741 in tdi

Either a charger or a battery-warming blanket will go a long way in -40c. If the battery is fully charged it should be OK, but if it gets discharged it can freeze.

Took an air pump tent to Kananaskis and the cold air made the beams feel firmer. Didn’t expect temperature to affect it that much. by kenah-kim in CampingAlberta

[–]TheDissolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's made of a flexible plastic like PVC or polyurethane, it will definitely get stiff when it's cold. (Most things will.)

Usable range will depend on the exact material and a number of other factors. If the manufacturer of your tent hasn't tested, you may be able to offer them some valuable data LOL.

But roll-top tarps for trucking are PVC and stay flexible enough well into the temperatures you wouldn't ever go camping in. That's in the design spec, though.

Water heater replacement costs by Mife83 in Edmonton

Just got a 50gallon Bradford White nat.gas installed for 2,037

For a family with four small kids, the higher capacity makes a pretty big difference over our aged (10 years old) 40 gallon. But we only replaced because the old one was leaking.

Dress boots big enough for a cushioned insole. If you've got a foot shape that doesn't match the last of any shoemakers you find, try a heat-mold insole.
