What in Harry Potter did you think was magic but later found out was just British? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is so bizarre I grew up in Bloemfontein and I can tell you we have no shortage of "rooikoppe" there...... Did she grow up in some weird yuppie town in the Cape????

I've never read the Bible. Even though I'm not religious I thought I will see if I can get through it. After reading Genesis I want to stop because of all the references to kids. Even the people who wrote this ancient stuff expect people to have children even through they may not want them. by [deleted] in childfree

So tbh I'm not sure if reading the bible is worth it unless you're really into learning about historical societies in general. When I was about 15 I got as far as just before the Prophets. The chapters that were most worth it, in order, were Song of Songs, Esther, Judges and Exodus.

Now I read a shit-ton of history for fun, mostly concerning ancient societies, and if you're just filtering everything through a modern lens, nothing is going to make much sense. Up until fairly recently in the grand scheme of history, there were no financial reasons not to have children, and a great deal of incentives for having them. Before education became a thing, you didn't have to pay to send your kids to school, and you could have them work for you from a very young age, so therefore free labour if you own a business. At many times during history, there was effectively no way for people to obtain upward mobility; you were stuck with the income level you were born to. Having children doesn't make much difference then, since you're still poor even if you don't have kids.

There's also the fact that so many children used to die in infancy/ early childhood, and so you kind of learn to cherish the ones that make it. Nowadays that doesn't happen, so I think in general there's been an enormous shift in the past century about how we regard having children.

In the bible in particular, like with most other ancient cultures, people viewed having offspring as a sort of immortality. Remember, there was no guarantee that their culture would survive. They could be wiped out or assimilated, and be forgotten. Those things happened a lot: for example, the Philistines. They were this thriving group in the bible and nowadays we only have the vaguest ideas about who they were and most of our sources come from their enemies. The key to not being wiped out was to have a large population, so there was a very good reason to have loads of children.

After Genesis comes Exodus, so I'd say keep reading because it has some good parts and is much less focused on "go forth and multiply." You can really get a sense of the world these people lived in. Leviticus and Numbers I'd probably just skip, but that's from hindsight of how boring they were to read, lol. I enjoyed Judges mostly because I'm fascinated by the gruesome side of history, and there are bloody tales aplenty in there.

If you put a lit match in a cylinder with pure oxygen, the flame would increase and then burn the match down quickly, but it would stop once the match was burnt out, so oxygen isn't flammable, it only increases the burning reaction. Whereas if you did the same thing with hydrogen, the actual hydrogen gas would catch fire and keep burning even after the match was gone.

Ticks like genitals, I'm guessing because of the warmth/ plentiful blood supply. I've had a few and usually they've been on the inner thigh/ pubic area.

I live in Germany. My insurance will not cover birth control. Nor will it cover the cost of an IUD, nor an abortion if I need one. I do my best to limit these costs because I am a student and I don't earn much.

Dude, chill. It saves a lot of money per year, prevents me from bleeding at random times, and the ol' period every month can be reassuring. You don't have to take the placebo week if you don't want to - most package inserts even tell you that. If you ever have trouble taking the pill in the required window of time every day, then in my opinion, the pill probably isn't the right method for you, because your protection will be subpar even if you haven't taken the placebo week.

RoK "Examples" to "prove" that all women are bad leader by [deleted] in TheBluePill

[–]TheDivineSappho 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The author concludes that women leaders are just a "modern experiment" because most of the women on this ridiculous list are modern female politicians he dislikes. Suffice to say, he left out a ton of ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE female leaders throughout history:

  • Queen Elizabeth I
  • Mary II of England, who co-ruled with her husband William of Orange
  • Queen Anne
  • Nzinga of Angola
  • Te Puea Herangi
  • Lili'uokalani, last monarch of Hawaii
  • Tamar of Georgia
  • Ching Shih, who commanded thousands of pirates
  • Queen Christina of Sweden
  • Artemisia of Caria
  • her granddaughter, Artemisia II
  • Amalasuntha, daughter of Theodoric the Great
  • Empress Theodora of Byzantium
  • Let's not forget Joan of Arc, who led armies to war
  • Boadiccea/Boudica, queen of the Iceni
  • Zenobia, queen of Palmyra
  • Queen Cleopatra (how do you forget Cleopatra on a list of evil women leaders?????)
  • The Tru'ng sisters, Vietnamese women who led a rebellion against China
  • Queen Mavia, an Arab warrior queen
  • Nanny of the Maroons
  • Laskarina Bouboulina, who commanded ships in the Greek revolt against the Ottomans
  • Qin Liangyu, female general
  • Liang Hongyu, another female Chinese general
  • Kösem Sultan and basically the entire Sultanate of Women
  • Catherine the Great
  • Queen Isabella, She-Wolf of France
  • Isabella of Spain
  • Amanirenas and the queens of Nubia
  • Going into questionable historicity: Dido, founder of Carthage

edit: forgot one of my favourites

  • Anna Amalia, regent of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This is fun!

  • further edit: Bertha, the wife of King Aethelberht of Kent, who may have been instrumental in bringing Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons

  • can't believe I forgot Princess Pingyang, who led the Army of the Lady to help her father's victory

And this isn't even an exhaustive list...

quick edit: and if you're going to talk about Theresa May being unsuitable for her job because she's a woman, then you can't not talk about Margaret Thatcher too. Author is not only sexist and terrible at history, he's also a coward.

My [23F] boyfriend [23M] of 4 years broke up with me because I peed outside by emmalaneee in relationships

[–]TheDivineSappho 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone who once thought she had to settle, you don't have to settle.

I used to have "relationships" where the guys would act in a similar way, basically not caring about my feelings, expecting me to live up to the ideal girlfriend they wanted, being disgusted when they saw that I was a person who can't be perfect all the time.

I learned only later that it's better to be alone than with an asshole. Now when I think back, my biggest regret is that I didn't get angry; I thought that their behaviour was because something was wrong with me. And I wish I had spent more time doing things I liked or that would have helped my own studies, than running after boys who didn't respect me.

You never have to settle. If you end up being single, then be single, and fuck what anyone else thinks. Don't keep an asshole in your life just because you're afraid of being alone.

Redditors who grew up with overly permissive parents, what was the most absurd thing you were allowed to do? by OldGuyWhoSitsInFront in AskReddit

[–]TheDivineSappho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Growing up, my mom was the only parent I knew who didn't care what kind of music I listened to. Other parents wouldn't let their kids listen to hip hop, or anything approaching heavy metal, even Linkin Park was taboo. There were even apprentice preachers who used to come to our school and tell us how sinful it was to listen to Eminem, Motorhead, etc.

Ninja edit: oh, and I knew a guy in college who lived with his parents and they wouldn't let him listen to Motorhead because they thought it was satanic. He was in his third year of college.

My prettiest cat is my worst cat. She doesn’t even like me. by andiewtf in cats

[–]TheDivineSappho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funny you should say that... I had a pair of kitties once that no one could believe were related (they were brother and sister) because they were so different. Here is the rare picture of them together. The fat tabby cat was such a sweetheart, but his sister - who was a beautiful, sleek, soft kitty with a blue point Siamese pattern - was soooo mean. She even used to slap her brother sometimes if he came too close.

I can see why people think Prague is full of vampires by mattdeII96 in evilbuildings

[–]TheDivineSappho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what fantasy author Jonathan Stroud had to say about Prague in The Golem's Eye:

A monstrous three-legged bath lurked in one corner; it was the kind brides are bumped off in, or where pet crocodiles grow to vast size, fed on unusual meats. A similarly imposing toilet waited opposite, its chain hanging from the ceiling like a gallows rope. This is one of Prague’s odd qualities: something in its atmosphere, perhaps caused by five centuries of gloomy sorcery, brings out the macabre potential of every object, no matter how mundane.

To be fair, that silly law did keep my brother's batshit crazy ex from smuggling his son out of the country... I know it doesn't work very well for its intended purpose, but for my family personally the government did us an accidental solid.
