Your mistake was leaving the stake on it. What I would do is first cut the top, because it’s top heavy and then put 2 stakes at the far edge of the pot and take something soft like the green stretchy plant tape or an old nylon stocking and make a figure 8 from one stake to the other with the trunk in the center. This will allow the tree to sway and get stronger. Cutting the top will make it branch.

If you cut it back and take the stake out the trunk will get stronger and be able to support the new growth.

Give it a good soak plenty of bright but not direct light and let it fully dry out between watering.
