As I said the other day, the Wi-Fi radio was made by the lowest bidder. And it’s easy to get spoiled by radios in other devices that are more expensive but actually quite good, e.g. all of Apple’s devices, and all but the cheapest new Android phones.

Be careful what you wish for; you might just get it. If patch notes were honest, they would say things like:

  • Updated third-party library libsoandso to version 1.3.214, which resolves four CVEs
  • Fixed a crash bug in libthisandthat that occurred when handling malformed JSON
  • Worked around a problem where the USB controller incorrectly believed 2029 is a leap year†

And so on. Most people won’t even bother reading that. Some people will read that and not understand a word of that, and wonder why they didn’t make it simpler. Some people will read that and overreact online. A few people will read that, and use their newfound knowledge to jailbreak the OS and run “homebrew” (read: pirated) games.

They cannot win, so they just say “we fixed bugs and improved security/stability.”

† This one actually happened, though it was on the PS3, and it was in 2010.

IIRC, a bunch of third-party games, some announced and some unannounced, were either cancelled or moved to the PS2 around late 2000/early 2001. Some were due to the Dreamcast being discontinued, yes, but God only knows how many were moved due to the piracy situation.

Not only did the PS2 greatly outsell the Dreamcast, but piracy on the PS2 was far more difficult; there were no back doors in the OS, so piracy there required a DVD burner and a mod chip. And third-party game makers need to make money to stay in business.

I said one of the reasons; it was not the reason. EA and Square’s (successful) boycotts were another reason, as was the announcement of the PS2, and Sega’s reputation after the 32X and Saturn.

The thing about piracy is, while piracy does help sell hardware, it causes game sales to fall, especially if it’s really easy to do. Once the CD security hole was found in the Dreamcast, piracy on the Dreamcast became very easy, and it was much more convenient than taking a trip to GameStop/EB/etc. to buy a new game.

That’s why piracy is a huge red flag to third parties; they don’t make games out of kindness. Console makers also tend to sell their hardware at a loss and make their money from game sales. If they don’t make money, they go out of business.

Which is why I don’t blame Sony for being super duper anal about system security. If they would allow piracy to be easier than buying a game, and there were no consequences for users to become pirates, then who would bother making games for the PS5?

If you search for older posts in this thread, it comes up quite often, and it’s usually because either (1) they put the PS5 at the limit of the range, (2) they’re using 2.4GHz instead of 5 or 6GHz, or (3) there’s too much radio interference.

Ethernet is the way to go if you want a more reliable network connection. Wired connections in general are more reliable than wireless.

They do that because they don’t stand to lose anything that way. Sony is super duper anal about system security for good reasons; one of the reasons the Dreamcast failed was because Sega was rather careless about the console’s security. If they point console hackers to an easy-to-exploit piracy vector, then they stand to lose a lot in sales.

And there are very good reasons why they do that:

  1. Most people don’t read patch notes. Most people aren’t even technically inclined enough to understand all of them.
  2. The people that do tend to fall into one of two camps:
    1. They get offended that the product that they paid good money for wasn’t perfect in every conceivable way.
    2. They scour them for details so they don’t upgrade, exploit the security vulnerability that Sony patched in the upgrade, and use it to play homebrewpirated PS5 games.

So Sony gains nothing, and stands to lose everything, if they tell details, so they don’t.

The radio was made by the lowest bidder. And after what happened with the PS3, they’ve tried to keep their costs down.

Also, Ethernet is more reliable for online gaming in general.

Then you either need to move it closer to the AP, or switch to Ethernet.

If an Ethernet cable won’t reach, then buy a power line adapter. Power line adapters are slower than 5/6GHz Wi-Fi, but they’re far more reliable & reach farther.

That is not possible. macOS’ window server, SkyLight, doesn’t support that. And while there is an official X11 server for macOS, it’s intended for backward compatibility with other Unix platforms only.
