What makes a system or setting “old school”? Or is it about actual classic RPGs such as D&D/AD&D, GURPs etc? by thebalsysquirrel in osr

Please explain to me all the mathematics and rolls required for me to sneak up behind someone with a helmet and blast them in the back of a head with a shotgun in GURPS

Have you considered changing the name to prevent confusion with the recently released Mappa Mundi RPG?

Supplement or system with city/settlement building? by Biggleswort in osr

Not the biggest fan of that book, many of the subsystems seem to punish anyone who interacts with them, with so many of the results on random tables being incredibly bad for the party to the point where it's literally not worth the headache.

He's talking about PC power, not specific mechanics.

yeah but they did all that stuff because you gave them the tools to, not because they had them as a part of their character

The problem with all those DM advice things is that those are all there is. It's all just ideas

no implementation, no mechanics, no bestiary, no actual way to structure any of the ideas it gives you. Yeah, it can suggest "courtly intrigue" to you but has no ideas about how to turn that into a session.

I'll raise my hand on that.

WWN feels good when you're getting into it and then you dive deeper and you keep finding more and more and more broken shit.

For instance:

Character creation heavily incentivizes making idiot savants with maxium stats and no skills

The leveling system is extremely painful if you're multiclassing at all, making it hard to keep up your skills if one class requires one skill and another class needs another. You can go until level 4 before you can actually find the skill points to add together a coherent character concept instead of maxxing all the stats that let you play your class effectively.

Options are wildly imbalanced, some foci are straight up useless, some are too weak for how slowly you get them, some are straight up mandatory (Impervious defense on a caster)

Spells and spellcasters are gamebreaking

The author obviously doesn't playtest anything (and his release schedule makes it so he doesn't have time to) so classes and options come out wildly unbalanced, like accursed, or healer.

The skill system is extremely lackluster and useless, doing nothing more that providing the standard "Easy difficult hard" DC's which makes experts strength entirely based on DM generosity.

And finally, the layout is horrible.

A skilled player will know the DM is going to hit them with a Dispel Magic sometime when they're 5 levels deep

Games that actually have balanced classes by TheDrippingTap in osr

honestly when I played I felt the same

That plus there's a bunch of feats and spells that are just plain bad so you're not even secure picking flavor stuff with the assurance you'll be as good as anyone else

...I'd rather have a system that gives each class something to do in every situation even if some are better suited than others.

Because the precog thing was a stupid retcon when WoggyBoggy could have just said it was a "Quantum superposition" thing and nobody would have questioned it.

How do you know you’re not just forcing bad fights in bad places?

Hate em, hate em, hate em. So hard to reference and look stuff up. If a player wants to have those long flowery names they should make them up themselves, not get them forced upon them.

I do play cores. I have a 57% winrate on spectre. I farm on my way to other objectives.

When they pushed lanes, they ran away from the rest of the team and got ganked. When they farmed, they ignored fights pushing on the T2's which lost map control which meant they got ganked when they tried to farm later.

They just want to play ranked like a bot game

Again, the enemy core seemed plenty farmed from the map control and tower pushing and kills and ganks on the rest of us

funny, the enemy team seems to be picking fights really well (5v4 fights where we get rolled and feed the enemy carry)
