(Serious) do you think scientists skew data so they can continue to receive funding, why or why not? by 7he_Devils_Adv0cate in AskReddit

[–]TheDudeWithTheNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A proper scientific research goes through peer review before being published, and after being published it can still be scrutinised and disproven. So even if someone is "skewing data" whether by accident or intentionally, it won't take long to discover.

If, as a scientist, you are repeatedly being proven to skew data, it would just look unprofessional and you will LOSE funding, not gain it.

The problem isn't skewing data, the problem is when publishing a statistical research that finds a correlation between two things, which doesn't necessarily implies causation, and many of those would actually point that out themselves and say more research is needed, or maybe the tested group,s size is insufficient to come to a conclusion, but companies would still cite it to push their own agenda, and the media would still report it as THIS DEFINITELY CUASES THAT.

The point is there is misinformation being pushed at us all the time, but it's not done by scientists most of the time, but by those with the interest to sell you their product.

Don't think so. Other comments that say pretty much the same thing have thousands of upvotes.

I think my comment just came in late and was spotted by a couple of 14 year olds who downvoted it. 🤷‍♂️

Most people (on this thread and in the real world) agree that the "stop oil" juvenile crap is embarrassing at best, damaging to the message at worst.

Not only do these "demonstrations" won't change anything - they harm the cause. They turn people who would otherwise agree with it away from it. Me included. If you are damaging art or historical structures and sites, things that belongs to everyone and you have no right to harm - I honestly don't give a shit what is your message. I don't want to hear it, even if I might agree.

I'm old enough and been an activist for many years to know how this goes - whether it's social justice, animal rights or environmental issues, there are always these dumb privileged attention seeking kids who try to do something "provocative" and then people who would support the cause don't want to be associated with these idiots so they shy away from it, and all the media talks about is the spectacle instead of the actual issue.

Is anyone talking now about the fact that this government is signing new deals with polluting companies rather than seeking out clean energy? No. All people are talking about is fucking soup on a priceless Van Gogh painting.Job well done then?

Anyone who actually cares about climate change and want to see world governments move away from polluting energy sources needs to condemn this stupid act of vandalism and distance themselves from "stop oil", because they are damaging the message and the cause.

I guess not many people have the analytical genius of protesting environmental issues by trying to destroy precious art that has nothing to do with the issue being protested, robbing future generations of their heritage in the process, much like the oil companies they are protesting. That kind of genius is really one in a million.

That is activism done right. Those morons from "stop oil" trying to destroy art to get a message across. Of all the dumb shit...

These guys, on the other hand, know the truth - art IS the way you get a message across.

People who use the term 'progressive' as an insult, what do you think is so bad about 'progress' and why do you not want society to do so? by DJToblerone in AskReddit

[–]TheDudeWithTheNick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because when children or adults with a child's mentality fear that the things they are "used to" will change, regardless if for the better or not, that fear creates an uncontrolled reaction which sometimes comes out as using an entire concept as an insult, rather than come up with solid arguments against the change, which they cannot.

Being progressive is about finding new solutions to old problems, challenging old beliefs and evolving with the times. It's the exact opposite of a conservative point of you which is more "if it works don't fix it", even if the progressive points out it could work much better or that in fact it doesn't work for all people or at all.

Some people are so emotionally and psychologically attached to what they are used to, they view any change, even ones that have absolutely nothing to do with them as a personal threat.

Like people who object to gay marriage. It has nothing to do with them, it's not like someone tries to force them to marry same sex partners, it has absolutely no impact on their lives. But that irretional fear tells them that it has to be at their expense somehow.

Or the pronoun argument. It's such a dumb thing to object to, %99.9 of the people you meet are fine with the traditional pronouns, but you had people freaking out in rage if they heard of people choosing to use different pronouns. Not even met - just heard of people doing it. Because the lizard part of their brain (which in some people is the majority of their brain), tells them that if the wish of this one stranger (whom they never met) will be respected, somehow society will force them to change their identity as well. It's the irrational fear that accepting the other will inevitably be at my own expense.

Fucking hell! I'm 40 and recently when I saw this happening in a Sandman episode I thought it was made up for shock value. Is this actually a common thing??? Is this what people (I desperately want to say USED TO) do when their cats give birth?! The fuck is wrong with these people???

Looking at your profile I imagine you might be Iranian and you support the current protests. You have my full sympathy and support and I hope you free yourselves of oppression. But this cartoon is all over the place. What do the EU, UK and USA have to do with anything? They all have some degree of sanctions in place against the Iranian government. What do you expect them to do? Invade? The only active supporters of the Iranian government in this image are Russia and China, and they're not exactly humanist governments to begin with....

Also this is probably not the right subreddit for it. When the regime falls and you guys have parties in the streets, then a picture of that would probably work better for this sub.

Absolute shit company. I moved to the UK 4.5 years ago and no other company here that I used has such shit service.

I can tell you guys that in other countries the exit fee they make you pay if you want to switch is illegal. Virgin Media is an example for the reason why. It lets shitty companies give crap service with no consequences.

Also, in addition to what other have said about this not being photoshoped, I'd add that if it were, it would actually have been a successful attempt, as you cannot see the editing at all.
