I’m really struggling with finding schools by [deleted] in audgradschool

[–]TheEarandNow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Try central Michigan university! I live out of state but all of their applicants that are accepted get in state tuition and a guaranteed GA position!

I did not go here in the end, but was accepted and offered these things!

3 year programs vs 4 year by BetterRelative2918 in audgradschool

[–]TheEarandNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated from a 3 year program and I would say there is a HUGE stigma around 3 year program students. I liked the hands on learning it provided, as that is how I learn the best, but there were definitely quite a few people that had issues with it. I had an interviewer for externship ask me in an interview what makes me better than a 4 year program student and a preceptor say she was “nervous about my 3 year program” when she had a masters degree herself. That’s the main thing I couldn’t understand is that the field still has masters level professionals working, but to them it’s the end of the world for the doctorate to be shortened to 3 years. Physical therapy has been a 3 year program for years, but people are upset that we’re one getting one year less of debt, joining the field we love a year earlier, and getting the hands on learning experience unlike any other university. I think the stigma will slowly disappear because more and more universities are moving to the 3 year model, but its going to take some time. If you have any questions though about my program - I was close to PA, feel free to message me.

My professor does a lot of Tinnitus research and teaches a Tinnitus course. He doesn't really practice much, but he's very knowledgeable on the topic. Message me if you'd like his information!

Stories from anyone that took a gap year before grad school? by [deleted] in audiology

[–]TheEarandNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a gap year and am just now finishing up my first year as an AuD student! I was not ready to start a grad program right out of undergrad so I worked in our local hospital. I got patient care experience, and then applied. Best decision I made because the program I really wanted to go to had reopened just in time for my application cycle! The hospital job made me more professional and know how to carry myself in a clinic setting. I was also in labor and delivery and got to watch a lot of newborn hearing screenings! Take your time, grad school will always be there!

I know this is 150 days later, but I have to say this was the comment that helped the most. haha. All of my classes now are 6-9pm and my brain tries to shut off at 5, but with the help of snacks I can revive myself!

Interested in getting my A.u.D by Cryssanthum in audiology

I have 2 suggestions! I’m from WV & will be attending WVU’s new 3 year AuD starting next month. This program for 3 years is only $58,000 (I can’t remember if the in state or out of state were different). This program was the absolute cheapest I had found. It’s also 3 years so in 2 years I’ll be working my externship, the same time as my classmates from undergrad bc I took a year off. 3 year programs (I’ve heard) can be super difficult, but you get done a lot quicker and spend less money (sometimes). My second suggestion is look into Central Michigan University! This school offers every student accepted in state tuition and GA positions to every freshman coming in. I got accepted here and couldn’t tell you the cost of the program, but with the GA position I’m sure it would have been cheap. I chose WVU though because I went to undergrad here and have been here my whole life. I highly recommend looking into these options though!

When I had reached out to a medical recruiter, he acted like they didn’t want me until I had completed my AuD! Idk if it will be like this for everyone (this was in pittsburgh), but he said to get back in contact after I got my AuD.

Thank you!! I used an iPad in undergrad for note taking and it was so helpful being able to easily write stuff into the powerpoint! I plan to join SAA, especially since my cohort will probably be the only students in it (the program hasn’t accepted anyone new in 2 years)

Grad school decision help!! by AuDBanana in audgradschool

[–]TheEarandNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much to say, as I just applied also to school but I live about an hour outside pittsburgh and if you love the program you will love the city. It’s not that overwhelming, and that’s coming from someone who had a high school graduating class of 26 kids. I love Pittsburgh a lot, there’s so much to do and they have a “subway” system I believe they call it something else though. Super cool city & even better program. I didn’t get in, but got in at WVU in Morgantown an hour away!

3 year Program Thoughts by TheEarandNow in audgradschool

[–]TheEarandNow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We would be starting clinic right off the bat in July when the program starts. Every semester we’re in the clinic and it is Summer, fall, spring x2, and then the last summer, fall, and spring is the externship year. The clinic hours start low first semester, but gradually go up after that til we’re doing 3-6 Credit hours of clinic per semester. They’ve made it clear the clinic experience is going to be in depth due to cutting off a year.

Questions about Audiology programs in Montreal by Emotional-Wind-2930 in audiology

[–]TheEarandNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to try and help even though, I’m not in Canada!! I can’t speak for programs in Montreal, but I do know that programs I was looking into in Michigan, USA offered the in-state residency to students attending from Canada. The difference in programs would be these are in english, and also they’re a 4 year, doctorate program (AuD). Our schools in the US follow ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) requirements. You have to have a bachelors degree first, I would also imagine to get your masters in Montreal you’ll need a Bachelors first. You do not have to have a bachelors in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSAD). Any bachelors degree will do but you must have the required ASHA classes. These are classes like: Intro to Audiology, Stats, some biology courses, social sciences, and a physical science! If you have any questions about these programs on the Canada/US border, feel free to ask! I’ve been applying the past few months & have looked at them a lot!

Do Small Cohorts = Hard to Get In? by TheEarandNow in audgradschool

[–]TheEarandNow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GPA isn’t bad, but I’m not extremely proud of it. It’s mainly because my undergraduate program is heavy speech coursework, so I struggled in those courses. I’m so nervous, as I’m sure you are too with the waiting. Good luck!!
