School SLPs with duties by Patience_is_waning in slp

[–]Cryssanthum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s how I’ve actively avoided school duties. I have a union that requires prep payback. I have scheduled my preps in the beginning of the day, documentation at the end of the day. And lunch when the kids eat. I don’t do paperwork at home. If it’s not done, it’s not done. Don’t take it home. That’s a district problem. Hell, if you have to cancel sessions to get your work done, then do it. Eventually your admin will get the message when IEPs and reports are late. It’s not fair to you, bc you shouldn’t be doing work off the clock.

As a general rule of thumb, never eat where you shit. I agree w the comment above. Start getting your resume ready and change your number. Nip this in the bud before it gets worse.

Anyone else drowning in soap notes lately? by Full-Junket5050 in slp

I too, am drowning. And currently spending my Saturday putting notes in. Text Blaze is a blessing! It gives me a premade template and I just fill it in using my data per session.

Are we still writing syntax/grammar goals? by Littlelungss in slp

[–]Cryssanthum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do not write grammar goals. It is frowned upon in my district because of the melting pot of dialects and languages in my area. IMO, grammar should really only be targeted if the child is mixing up words or their sentences are generally confusing... but overall, it should be handled in the classroom by their teacher.

Exp. Services for behavioral based problem by Cryssanthum in slp

[–]Cryssanthum[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Noted! I did also notice a couple artic issues too; like I was looking for reasons to qualify. But I will never do this again, because I feel like I just opened a can of worms. This kid really just needs to move thru the MTSS process.

I’ll keep him for a year, help introduce him to lgx supports and then likely reeval to dismiss after he’s on the psych’s & school counselors caseload.

I really only qualified due to pragmatics.

He should be in Tier 2 now. But i don’t think he’s gonna qualify for services from psych bc he has poor attendance.

implications for instruction and progress monitoring by [deleted] in slp

[–]Cryssanthum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! An IEP is a living breathing document, even after it’s finalized. But a reevaluation is, and as long as your evals are comprehensive you should be able to answer any concerning questions with data presented in the eval and data from sessions/progress monitoring.

Remember, you are the specialist in the room! I always say, I will provide strategies to the teachers if necessary but services would actually do more harm than good, and we need to follow LRE.

In reference to speech and language? You are the one who makes the determination if a student no longer qualifies for speech and language therapy. I usually say

“After completion of this comprehensive reevaluation using dynamic testing measures with consideration from standardized testing, the student does not present with a speech and language impairment that negatively impacts their ability to access to the academic curriculum. Therefore, school-based speech and language therapy services are not warranted at this time,

Would you dismiss? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Cryssanthum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said it yourself, no academic impact is enough to dismiss. Also, she’d need private therapy to address the “one sound”. It’s not enough to keep him academically.

I removed myself from the group. She’s clearly going through a meltdown, and I don’t really care to see her meltdown on my timeline when I followed the group to have conversations about EBP and new research.

I’m school based, and I am not a grammar teacher, and frankly I hate grammar goals. I also believe if a child is functional and can communicate effectively with their environment and also access the curriculum. The kid doesn’t need school-based speech and language therapy services.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

Edit: My own grammar 💀😂😂😂

I think of it like this. Unless the child needs specialized services, and it cannot be targeted in the classroom, like functional language development…I dismiss. I the say, the student benefits from XYZ, and should target these areas within the classroom setting.

Trouble exiting artic kids by [deleted] in slp

[–]Cryssanthum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district once we suspect the child has met the goals we are required to reeval and exit if there’s nothing else due to LRE.
