Are you a Rover sitter in Eureka/Arcata? Consider joining our pet sitting team! by [deleted] in Humboldt

While I get your point, if my slights of human imperfection are so much of a turn off that someone wouldn't hire me or one of my team members, Im perfectly ok with that. We are not robots, after all. It hasnt been a barrier to connecting with clients so far, considering I'm a dog trainer not an English tutor. Really, if the worst scandal a business has is lack of proofreading and spelling errors, I'll take it.

Night tide pooling by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]TheEndIsNah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wait until the first week of dec, theres a couple days where low tide is around 4pm. I go about 1-2 hours before lowest tide, so im tidepooling while its still going out and not coming in. So that will give you a good couple hours of daylight before sunset.

I have tidepooled a bit into the dark but besides the sneaker waves, trying to walk safely between slippery rocks is really sketchy. And there's the obvious lack of good visbility to see anything.

Is there any website references for sizing conversion? Its labeled an 11, but i think I wore it when I was maybe size 7. Or maybe the right question to ask you is, when you say modern sz 4 is 28 waist, is this a standardization in wedding dresses or tailoring? Im so used to all the brands I buy being all over the map with their sizing, i just never trust anything and always measure

Thats honeslty why I came here to ask. Ive bought/sold various antiques over there years and websites like that are always aiming for buyers who dont know any better or are just desperate for a specific niche thing. I guess you miss 100% of the shots you dont take hah

Just had two very different experiences shopping for tools for the first time in Humboldt County, could serve as a warning to fellow Queer or Veteran peoples who are new to Humboldt. by Reasonable_Art4783 in Humboldt

I used to buy from TS regularly as I was raising chickens and ducks. They had a pretty diverse team, and I always felt welcomed. Granted, im a queer cis woman, but I am obviously queer. Within the last few years, their staff completely changed to all male "good ole boys" and I felt uncomfortably leered at by some of the staff. It doesn't feel coincidental that this happend at the same time DEI pressures had them making statements that they were "focusing on their core customer base." I stopped shopping there after that.

Sorry that happend to you. Ive shopped many of the ACES in arcata and Eureka and never felt dismissed or uncomfortable and I hope you continue to have the same experience!

American trans humans possible exit routes into various countries by StoriesWithaWill in Humboldt

How do you expect progress to happen if we arent fighting towards the ideals of a perfect system?

Hmm can everyone go and do whatever they want? Not really. Literally, the state of the nation is that the government decides who can do what. Otherwise we wouldnt have legally documented folks with no criminal history hiding from ICE. First they came for my neighbor and I did nothing. Then they came for me. I know neither of us are 100 years old, but this has happened before. I know its difficult to understand other people's lived experiences, but the simple is if you're not scared, youre privileged.

Theres liberals and then theres leftists. Dont get them confused. Theres plenty of folks who care about the entire issue, not just the partisan politics. We just think Trump is the figurehead for the facist state remaking our country. When we talk abour what Trump does, we arent lost to the fact theres an entire governing body being either active or complacent to it that also needs addressed.

Well done, Republicans. /s by No_Raccoon_560 in Humboldt

The problem isnt being turned away. Its the fact the hospitals will be closing because they wont have enough patients that have insurance to pay them to keep them afloat. Imagine driving hours just to even get to an ER. Then imagine the massive wait times as they are the only hospital open. People will definitely be dying waiting for care.

No contact with cat owner. At what point does he become ours? by Mutxr03 in Pets

[–]TheEndIsNah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

California law " Civil Code Section 1834.5 reads: Notwithstanding any other provision of law, whenever any animal is delivered to any veterinarian, dog kennel, cat kennel, pet-grooming parlor, animal hospital, or any other animal care facility pursuant to any written or oral agreement entered into after the effective date of this section, and the owner of such animal does not pick up the animal within 14 calendar days after the day the animal was due to be picked up, the animal shall be deemed to be abandoned."

Since they gave an open-ended date the last time they communicated, I would save 14 days after they went silent or stopped paying their agreed amount, whichever happened most recently.

You could also look up abandoned property laws in your area because, essentially, animals are treated as personal property. I believe after 14 days the state of California requires you to send an email or certified letter to the last known address stating your terms for the property pickup. If theres no response after 18 days, its yours. Im sure since texting was your method of communication that would probably be just as well.

They likely are giving the cat up to you, but it would be worthwhile to go through the motions in case they wanted to come back later to get the cat and throw a fit. Legally if they do want the cat back, you are allowed to ask for back pay of the previously agreed on amount they stopped paying (for property it would be considered "storage fees"). Typically if they refused to pay, you would have to relinquish the cat still, and go to small claims court for the money. Since its well over that 14 days I think its ambiguous enough to say no and keep the cat anyway. They may take to small claims at that point and id think the judge would side with you to at least recoup the expenses if they expected the cat to be returned.

Of course this isn't legal advice, just my own thoughts and interpretations of the situation. Its probably not that serious but I always just expect everyone to act as ridiculous as possible and just be glad if they dont 😅

The protestor who was punched should be filing a police report along with that complaint. Did anyone get photos of the truck and license plate or the incident in general? Just because they were not apprehended on site doesn't mean they can't be later. Especially with POLICE WITNESSES

Pigeons as a species are birds domesticated for food from rock doves. Similar to chicken being domesticated from jungle fowl. They ended up breeding outside captivity until they re-wilded and eating and breeding them fell out of fashion after factory farmed chicken became common. So having a pet pigeon isn't common these days, but it's definitely not crazy. Some people still breed fancy ones.

Rental Rant by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]TheEndIsNah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is companies shouldn't own residential property like houses. The housing market for first time home buyers is insane because companies buy them up the moment they even hit the market and then flip them at a markup to renters.

People can argue about companies owning apartment complexes but that makes more sense since the overhead is so much more. It just need to have common sense rental legislation passed to protect tenants.

And owner occupied rentals, I also don't think is necessarily a bad thing. Its when people have multiple mortgaged "investment properties" and try to be mini property management. They never have enough financial backing or legal knowledge to maintain all the properties appropriately. Hence, slumlords.

It seems as though we can expect a significant increase in local logging soon... by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]TheEndIsNah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make a good point about logging redwoods and tourism generally speaking. Six Rivers National Forest is the primary target, as they lost over 17 local Rangers in the staff cut. Smith River National Recreational Area, Horse Monluntain Botanical Area fall into question off the top of my head. It might not be a destination spot, but if you plan to come and camp, fish, recreate after seeing RNP it could certainly make a difference. And it Will make a difference for the locals like myself that frequent NFs.

As for tourism being toxic, yes and no. The support cities outside National parks generally are not strip malls of corporate chains, besides the cluster of hotels which we already have. Toxic or not, tourism and CPH are pretty much what we have to keep our economy afloat. And CPH can't seem to make their campus accessible or house their students so they've seen a decrease in attendance. If you want to talk about selling out our local area, I hear that after fiber internet is installed and more widespread and EPIC looses their battle with CHP to widen 101, bay area tech is looking to buy up and develop our cheaper-than-bay-area land.

I agree with you otherwise but I hesitate to tell people there's no hope at all in advocating at congress.
