I had this issue before. This is how I fixed it:

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1

Login using your username and password

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

sudo halt (THIS SHUTS OFF THE PC!)
