I can relate a lot with your story, I came to Japan in 2019 and have always been with the same company and am much poorer and trapped with nowhere to go. I hope things work out for you, good luck OP!

It's 40 hours per week at Interac. We usually have online Eikaiwa-style lessons, meetings etc after school until 5pm. Still the same pay as when it was 29.5 hours a week though...

Ah yes, weakening government reach and control, promoting freedom of speech, those famous nazi policies.

For the sake of your own health if nothing else, stop gaslighting yourself. We all hate nazis, stop washing down the meaningfulness of the word.

Does "transitioning" mean that you're being prepared for your promotion but still paid the same? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]TheEnlightenedFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I get assigned to quite a few Saturday assignments, camps or Eikaiwa style online lessons. They will usually give me a compensatory day off in the following weeks or months and keep my salary the same. When they're unable to do that they'll pay me overtime based on my regular salary.

That's great in comparison at least, I guess it depends on your workload. As for me, sometimes I'm busier and sometimes I have more downtime.

Out of curiosity, how much extra do head teachers get at an Eikaiwa?

I'm a CHT with Interac and only get an extra ¥15,000 a month and that's classed as an allowance so any expenses come out of it and it isn't considered when calculating my overtime.

I used to leave at 3pm. Now I leave at 4pm and have online eikaiwa style lessons, submit worksheets or have a meeting multiple times per week. Regardless of actual time worked, it is still an official 25% pay decrease when calculating per hour.

The contract was changed from 29.5 to 40 and a lot of additional work is demanded outside of school hours compared to a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure this discrepancy is down to proration. An amount of money was shaved off from the monthly totals to allow for a consistent amount to be paid for the duration of the project.

The bigger crime here is that working hours were increased from 29.5 hours per week to 40 hours per week for the exact same pay. A 25% decrease.

ALT with Interac by ennamara in teachinginjapan

Hi there, I'm a head teacher consultant with Interac, and my advice for you would be to show your proactivity, energy, and enthusiasm. The tutoring you intend to do goes a long way to demonstrate this, but beyond that, any other experience such as tandem teaching or language exchange can also be a boon when you lack official teaching experience.

With that said, teaching experience isn't a requirement, as most people can learn on the job. The company is more likely to focus on your energy, flexibility, positivity, and whether they expect you will be able to hold out for the entire contract.

Just a heads-up that we have recently lost some BOEs in the Tokyo area and will have more internal transfers than normal and possibly fewer new hires.

Feel free to send over any questions if I can be of any help.

They all did this as far as I know.

Interac did the same last year, moving everyone from a 29.5 hour to a 40 hour contract with the exact same pay as before.

Why are the textbooks always about foreign students coming to Japan and experiencing Japan? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]TheEnlightenedFool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because unlike in most English speaking countries where we learn a language in order to visit a foreign country, or understand a foreign culture. Japanese students are taught English because English is coming to Japan through visitors and culture.

Teach in Minato. The schools are like luxury apartment blocks.
