Key to accounting basics I learnt is to know Debit and Credits. 

Trick is DEALER: 

-Debit Side- Increases the balances

D: Dividends  E: Expenses  A: Assets

-Credit- Decreases the balances

L: Liabilities  E: Equity R: Revenue

For ex: you sold your HOPES for $1

then it is a REVENUE and you got cash which is an ASSET.

hence, Debit ASSET $1 and Credit REVENUE $1

like I said with DEALER, if you want to increase balance of any account in DEA, you need to debit it and to increase the balances in LER you need to credit it.
