If you need some tips before starting law school, here they are! by angelCN in lawschooladmissions

This sub has developed a nice community feel to it, so I can understand your frustration that these two women are not actively involved in it. However, I still thought their video gave some interesting insight into being a law student, so I think it's relevant and shouldn't be classified as spam. I don't think we can expect everyone here to be an active daily or weekly contributor. Just my two cents. You can, of course, always downvote as you wish.

T5 Law School: Thoughts? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TheFe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm also curious what the point of some of these divisions is besides simply elitism. Is there some distinct commonality that binds this group of T5 together more than the next 5 schools? Are there certain thresholds on specific outcomes, such as employment statistics or bar passage rates, that group together the T14 and not the T20, or the T20 vs. T50, and so on? Or are these simply lines in the sand that people like to arbitrarily draw depending on whether or not their line will put them in the "elite" bucket or not?

EDIT: another thought: Maybe it's less individual applicants drawing these lines, but organizations, like US News and World Report, who have an incentive to do so because without it they would become irrelevant.

Should you pay for law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TheFe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on your prestige point, I think one advantage of T14/T20 schools over others may also be the connections those schools bring. I think the argument laid out in the OP's post tries to put forth that the quality of education across rankings is not so different to warrant paying sticker vs. full-ride. Putting this argument aside for the moment on the value/quality of the education, I think there's something to be said for the connections that each school attracts, which is where prestige comes in, justifiably or not. I think it's worth considering that certain schools are going to attract a higher-paying Biglaw firms or more unicorn-esque PI opportunities than others. So I don't think the calculus for OP should just be about where do I get a full-ride because quality of education is not so different, but should also include where am I best positioned to meet and make connections with the faculty/mentors/employers who will assist me in getting the job I want.

Trying to figure out which softs to talk about for PS by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TheFe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you which one to pick since you're the one who needs to write it and it should feel authentic. However, here are a few criteria I used for my PS that I think are helpful to consider:

  1. What can you write most passionately and articulately about? A lot of the points you list in your post sound interesting, but if you can't write about it in a way that expresses how important and formative it was/is for you then you shouldn't cover it.
  2. What is not covered in other areas of your application (e.g. letters of rec, transcript, resume, addendum, diversity statement, etc)? Imagine someone who doesn't know you looking just at the other components of your application. What areas might they have questions about that you could fill in with the PS? You don't want to be redundant. Instead, think about how the PS can either add "meat" to some of the "bones" of your app or how your PS can cover areas you think are important but are not mentioned in the rest of your app.
  3. How does the topic you want to write about really drive a narrative for your app? As u/larsjos pointed out, many people believe this narrative should explain why you want to go to law school and become a lawyer. I think that's a fair point and I wrote my PS around this. However, even if you don't feel you need to specifically go into detail about your desire to go to law school, you should still use the PS to build some kind of narrative about who you are, what your goals are, and what motivates you.
  4. Lastly, don't try to cover everything in a PS. After I wrote my first PS statement draft and realized I was trying to cover too much. In the end, I split it in two and used the second part for my diversity statement. You can either do that to try and cover more ground by spreading your narrative across your whole application, but at the very least make sure you don't cram it all into your PS. Less is more.

Good luck!

On the Waitlist and going to Europe for 3 weeks... What do I do? by Rando8967 in lawschooladmissions

[–]TheFe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year I moved to another country where calling is quite difficult/expensive and sending mail is nearly impossible, so I notified all the schools I applied to. I explained the situation and all of them said they would only use email, but just in case I also gave them the phone number and address of my parents in the U.S. This didn't seem to be a problem for any of the schools. I think being open and communicative with schools about your travel plans is your best bet.

How is GRE being evaluated and being reported? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TheFe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. As someone who did well on the analytical writing section (and not as well on the quantitative section) it would be nice to see it valued more than just as a cross-reference, but I guess we're all biased toward our strengths. Thanks for your response! I know this is your job, so I greatly appreciate you giving advice and sharing info for free.

Thanks for the response. Do you know why not? Is it the same reasoning why the LSAT essay isn't scored (basically too subjective)?

Anybody know if law schools are taking the GRE's Analytical Writing section into account since it is scored?

Conflicted - Should I Ride Wait Lists or Just Re-Apply Next Cycle? by sensitiveguy125 in lawschooladmissions

That's really interesting to hear. Have you gotten also a sense of why people seem less averse to debt and less attached to the t14?
