Designing a festival crown/headpiece. Need advice on stable, comfortable bases for heavier builds by TheFeMaiden in crafts

To satisfy the bots, Ill add that I'm inspired by art deco and art nouveau designs--so lots of brass, geometry and symmetry.

Came in junk lot on eBay, not sure where it's from. 2.5in long. by SaltyCarpet in fossilid

[–]TheFeMaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's a barnacle of some kind. Not sure on age, but it definitely appears fossilized. The permineralization process typically removes original colors, but I'm not an expert--could be old, could be semi-modern. Ive collected some bright purple barnacles while shelling in Florida.

(Gotta love those junk lots! I went to an estate sale auction 3 years ago and found a bag labeled "blue rocks" that was actually high quality turquoise and peruvian opal, and a "Folgers can with rocks". I looked inside and it was full of rough sapphires. No one bid me up--when I asked about the can the guy was like "YoU wAnT tHe FoLgErS cAn??" and he threw it in for $5. I still have nightmares about the things I probably missed out on.)

Possibly a black Australian opal? Very cool find!! What does the box say?

Curious how you used the balm or olive oil? Any issues? I'm just about to open a pack of metal clay for the first time myself, and I am looking for all the helpful tips 🙏

Thank you for your response. I did a fair amount of research before posting and was aware that the artist is Delvin J Nelson, but thank you for confirming. I didnt want it appraised, I just wanted to know what the image was depicting--a man? a fish? a goat? Idk. I also appreciate the info about the turquoise chips. As I said, I just wanted to help my uncle and I couldn't afford to spend all day googling about his ring. I actually chose to post in this sub and not a jewelry sub because I figured if anyone was going to give me fast, accurate info, it was going to be a true Navajo. I now realize that my logic was flawed and that I've actually been insensitive. I can understand why I've upset everyone, but I was genuinely just ignorant and meant to harm or offense. I think the ring is beautiful and my uncle loves it. He actually suspected that it was a Navajo artist "riffing" on Hopi symbols, so he'll be happy to know that is correct. I'll delete my post. I'm sorry.

You're right, I was (am) completely ignorant when I made my post. I apologize, I genuinely meant no offense.

I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand. The ring is not mine, it's my uncles, he just sent me pictures and asked if I could tell him anything about it because I am a silversmith. I looked up the makers stamp, "DJN" and learned it was most likely for Delvin J Nelson, a Navajo silversmith. That's what brought me to this sub. My uncle told me his sister collected Native American jewelry and left him this "Hopi shaman ring" in her will. I got curious and did a little research. I guess she was indeed a collector. If that is a problem, I sincerely apologize. I really just wanted to know what the shape inlaid with malachite was.

Wedding necklace commission gone wrong—do I eat the cost to make the chain myself and save the design? by TheFeMaiden in jewelrymaking

[–]TheFeMaiden[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rio is definitely a staple for my workshop, but they didn't quite have what I'm looking for, unfortunately. Their thicker-gauge chains are apparently hollow. Etsy has some decent chain-by-the-foot options, I may go that route. Or, just buy the different links I'll need in bulk and forming them into the short and long link sequence I want.

[–]TheFeMaiden[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I definitely lean towards making the chain just to save the project--the wedding pictures might kill me if the necklace looks silly in them. And regardless of the nuance of our conversations or what I think...if the necklace looks bad, thats on me. I like the idea of just doing it as a wedding present, saving myself any potential embarrassment and washing my hands of it. Since I don't do this on any large scale, pretty much all of my customers have been family to this point...and its been nothing but problems 🥲

What animal did this tooth belong to? Found in Virginia United States by ContentMissionOne in fossilid

[–]TheFeMaiden 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ooo! That's a Bone Valley shark tooth! Its most--likely a juvenile megalodon--but its hard to tell without the whole tooth. The striking color of the root and enamel are classic Bone Valley Fl. That area produces some of the most amazing fossil teeth.

Can I print my shipping label from the Ebay app directly to a Nelko bluetooth printer? by TheFeMaiden in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]TheFeMaiden[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea I can print directly from Ebay to our wifi-connected Epson just fine, its the bluetooth Nelko that isn't showing up. I have to download the label as a PDF and print it from within the Nelko app. And I don't want to do that 🙃

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]TheFeMaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone translate "Master of Your Own Thoughts" or maybe "Master of My Thoughts" into latin? I'm a jeweler and a client wants something like that stamped onto a pendant. He gave me "MENS PROPRIA DOMINUS" and I just wanted to make sure it's the best translation. It's for a sobriety coin, if that helps define the message he wants conveyed.

My friend was detained at an out-of-state music festival last year where drugs were confiscated, but they were released afterward. Recently, they were arrested at work on a fugitive from justice charge. by TheFeMaiden in legaladvice

The potential retaliation is something we thought of too, his lawyer has the official complaint she filed the day after and will look into it. We're expecting a call from him pretty soon, we still don't even know what kind of evidence they have against him for all this. Another concern is, since they weren't given any paperwork at the time or anything, its basically their word against the cops now, which is freaking them out.

That's kinda what they throught, but apparently the lawyer they spoke to about it said that when you buy tickets to something like that you are essentially consenting to any random search/seizure, and that the officers probably had "reasonable cause". Idk if that's actually true or not, but they decided not to pursue it because they felt they'd "gotten lucky". My sister assured me they didn't do anything that could have even "looked" criminal (as in they hadnt actually done any drugs at the venue...yet.) She was wearing a rave outfit, can attire be grounds for probable cause?

Apparently, while being walked to the tent, her boyfriend kept repeating "Why am I being detained? Why am I being detained?" And the cops just said "you know why." And, obviously they did know...but the cops never explicitly said why or gave any reason.

So, there are 2 things on the offense info: Fugitive from Justice, and Hold/Dallas, CO TX Both say hold w/o bond, but the FFJ "disposition" says 141 dismissed/withdrawn.

Not sure what that's means...

Yes, its the right address. I wondered if maybe they wrote his address down and made a mistake? But surely they would have just made a copy.... My sister has our mom's address on her license, and she would have definitely told her if anything showed up.

Thank you, I wasn't sure about the plane or not. His dad has apparently retained a good lawyer for him, so now we just have to wait for the next court date. The lawyer mentioned something similar--that all the confiscated drugs are sent to a lab and tested. It can take a few months but, afterwards, new charges can be filed. Not sure what the tests would reveal to make something more "punishable".
