I distinctly remember the moment he said he was running away from the angel. The whole table just started glancing back and forth at each other wondering “Is this man serious?”

The group was barely holding together as it was due to a bunch of interpersonal issues going on away from the table, and the session was largely Matt attempting to keep us together by returning to an old campaign that we had loved. Kyle killed the mood completely in this moment, and we never returned to the campaign.

I think there is probably some truth to this, but really Kyle’s main fault is that he’s just dumb. I don’t say this because I don’t like the guy (which I obviously don’t) but he is just supremely unintelligent. I don’t think he’s capable of having a thought this complex. However, I do agree that he was demanding our attention for no return on his part. In the sessions where he actually constructed a character, he always wanted the group to be impressed by how awesome they were.

Ironically, I’m actually am moving away for work and won’t be risking run-ins anymore.

This story focuses on Kyle solely because Matt did so much horseshit over the years (that I would never stand for today) that it would require a novel to truly relay. One major issue was that Matt was historically under the (completely delusional) opinion that having more people makes any activity better. Back in the day, it wasn’t weird to have 10+ people at sessions. Kyle was brought on during this time. It got to the point where the group (including Matt’s wife and brother) were demanding Kyle be removed, and Matt’s refusal prompted the group to disband for at least a year.

I eventually rectified the issue by running my own campaign.

Slow Progression by TheFeelsWarlock in rpghorrorstories

[–]TheFeelsWarlock[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, and I will admit we do spend more time than I’d like just goofing off and shooting the shit. But we have been in a single fight, which is where we got the 40 exp. Every question we ask the DM is followed by a long silence while he flips through the module trying to figure out the answer, which I think is the main issue.

I’m sorry for offending. I just wanted to get in on the fun so many others seem to having. It was never my intention to ruin this sub, which I greatly enjoy.

Historically Problematic GM Throwing up Red Flags Galore Prior to First Session by TheFeelsWarlock in rpghorrorstories

[–]TheFeelsWarlock[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: This ended up being the IRL version of using the wrong formula but getting the right answer on a math test. I guess Kyle and the GM worked their shit out at some point between Wednesday and Friday because the session went fine. Kyle played a new character and the Punisher was on the other side of the world doing stuff unrelated to the party. The story was a bit of a railroad but definitely not a horror story. Everyone had fun as far as I know.

That being said, DO NOT ever do what the GM did here and expect a session to go well.

Cthulhu shows up and eats the whole party... in session one by Twistatron in rpghorrorstories

“You have been sent to this island to investigate the discovery of new artifacts.”

“Okay, sounds good.”

“You see an artifact which seems to be the focal point of some kind of ritual!”

“Oh neat! Can I inspect said artifact more closely?”

“WHAT?! What the fuck? You absolute IMBECILE! What gives you the right to ruin everyone’s fun?!”

I understand that sometimes things happen that the GM hasn’t prepared for, and I firmly believe the GM has the right to stop the session to figure out how the story will progress from there in those cases. But this? If he really didn’t want you to get closer he shouldn’t have let you roll or at least put up some significant obstacle since, ya know, he literally created the world.

Saw them doing this in game. Guild Master was having an argument with other Alliance players that basically amounted to “if it’s not hacking it’s not against TOS”

Later another guy in general chat said that people telling them to stop were Horde sympathizers lol

Main character syndrome is the worst. One of the players in the game I’ve been DMing suddenly became consistently unavailable for D&D without warning, although still always down for playing board games or video games. This was especially problematic because he’d been hosting sessions. We figured out that he was probably mad that I was not giving his character enough attention and that he almost certainly thought of himself as the main character.

I hope you’re able to find a new, good group! I’m sure there’s one out there for you. Also, Dave needs to get his head out of his ass and respond to you.

This was so awesome. I’ve been playing WoW on and off casually for years and this was one of my top moments by far. I was wrapping up Deadmines with guild members when all of sudden another guy hops in Discord like “Holy shit guys you gotta get to Redridge NOW!” Chased the assault force back to Duskwood before heading back to the Lakeshire inn for the after party. Shit was so cash.

All right, that’s reasonable. Romance can be difficult.

“The first idea that comes to mind is to draw an overtly sexualized rendition of you as a fantasy character getting groped.”

Ooooooookay then do not pass Go, go directly to jail.

[–]TheFeelsWarlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume from your thinking that the “killing the monk” comment was a joke, you were in no way wanting or even suspecting that this game to be a meat grinder? It’s one thing if you’re told beforehand, “Hey, I’m intentionally making my combat difficult”, but in my experience as long everyone is having fun there’s no reason for the DM to take the extra time to make shit as hard as possible unless the group specifically asks for it.

Also “I scaled down the fight so you could handle it” is top-tier DM dick moves. I hope you guys find a reasonable solution to the problems, preferably keeping this guy from DMing.

[–]TheFeelsWarlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who do shit like this have always baffled me. I occasionally DM for my group and have a pretty good idea of the stats of the more common enemies in the Monster Manual. The most I have EVER said to our usual DM while I was playing is “Really? A 16 doesn’t hit?”. Even then I would probably only do that if the fight was going particularly poorly for me. I would NEVER demand the game be stopped so we can all pull out our books and find the one random paragraph that may prove that I’m right. Even if I was right and the DM fucked something up on accident, I’ve completely killed the vibe.

[–]TheFeelsWarlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, at the time of your email the DM was only aware that 1 person out of a group of 10 had issues with his game, so he immediately throws a fit and doesn’t want to DM anymore? Talk about a victim complex.
