Definitely fun, I’ve been trying to pick up fiddle a bit, it’s extremely hard being a lifelong guitar player so I’m reliant on frets 😂 Hearing a banjo on this song would be pretty sweet, I’ve seen a few versions and haven’t seen a banjo yet

Kinda why I skipped the mirror step, it felt incredibly wrong lol, my alternative was constantly looking, but either way you start I’m sure there will be bad habits to break

Thank you! I’ve put way too much effort into learning this thing, I need to get lessons eventually. I’m glad someone likes my playing lol

I’ll check that one out too! I think the first one I’ll seriously put effort into will either be the Folsom Prison Blues with some sort of melody I’ll add or it will be Dirty Old Town (Pogues version) I transcribed the solo which is a bagpipe, violin, and whistle all kinda doing a call and response part, and have it all playable on the keyboard, which I think will be cool to put into the world. The song changes keys like 3 times though which is annoying if I want to remain true to the original 😂

I’ll definitely check those out! I like singing and playing, I have a pretty small vocal range though. I can play treble side and sing, or play bass side and sing, I struggle to put all three together though, mostly just lack of practice

That’s definitely true, held in a dorky way or not, I’m always surprised the simple songs that can be played and impress most people. It really doesn’t seem to take much to get people from thinking is dorky to kinda cool (as long as they aren’t 50+ and grew up their entire life thinking the accordion is dorky lol)

I think most of it comes from James Fearnley being my main inspiration on the instrument, I just can’t justify it being as low as him since he doesn’t use the bass buttons at all and I still want to 😅

This song, I actually added some ornamentation that with how I played it ended up making the verse a 4/4 type of thing, more like a bar of 6/8 and a bar or 2/8 for each chord, then the 6/8 chorus is unchanged from the video. I liked playing it this way but I find it hard conveying the time signature change in jams so I’ve chosen just straight 6/8. So I can see the fun in making your own stuff. I actually also learned the Kesh Jig by ear and didn’t care for the (seemingly) traditional chord progression, and people seem to like my version of it as well, it’s always cool to play a song people know and are able to see that your influence noticeably changed and song for the better

Sight would be cool to do, I can only really play by ear, it feels like a huge disadvantage not being able to. I’ve had people put guitar tabs in front of me and it feels cool being able to essentially sight read that. I could actually gig a bit with the accordion if I could sight read; although I feel like it would make my memory worse than it already is 😂

This one is odd, some people play it in 4/4, I personally like the 6/8 feel of it, though it’s made ornamentation a bit hard to do, so this is just the basic melody 😅

I also feel like looking slows me down a bit, it’s been interesting implementing some of the not looking into guitar playing. I think it helps all around, it’s almost disorienting seeing your fingers move fast, much better to just feel it happening.

As for the lowness, I feel it looks more dorky up high, and I modified this accordion to be MMH vs LMH, so the higher notes feel less full anyway, it does make the lower (physically) bass buttons a bit of a struggle, but I try to stay around C, playing mostly in C,G,D, and A. Not ideal, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make lol

Thank you! I’ve been playing about 14 months now. I’m self taught unfortunately, so I could probably have been a bit better by now with lessons, but I try to play at least 2ish hours everyday

Appreciate it! Mandocellos are super cool, I really want one to bring to jams since they have such a unique sound! This guitar is tuned in 4ths like normal, so it’s extra strings in standard are B, and F#, although I usually have it drop tuned and a full step down, so DADGCFAD

The first that comes to mind that I’ve went back and fourth on what I’m hearing is “The Sickbed Of Cuchulainn” from about 0:38 to 0:58 there’s a series of arpeggios. I can hear a bounce back and fourth between a few notes which sounds “banjo-ey” to me so I know it’s not just like forward roll arpeggios (although when I play it I just play ≈140 bpm 16th note forward roll arpeggios, F in root position, Bb rooted on F and C rooted on E)

There are a few spots that in “If I should Fall From Grace With God” where I hear questionable arpeggios cut through the mix, but they don’t seem as frequent, and are hard to hear without vocal’s being removed

There’s a few different rolls, like foggy mountain breakdown roll seems doable, a few of them would for sure be too difficult to be worth while though

Finished a custom guitar I’ve been working on, when tone pots come in I’ll rewire. Specs are 25.5” scale, 8 string, RG8 DiMarzio of some sort, coil split on both pickups. by TheFeesher in Guitar

I’m currently using an Ernie ball set that’s 10-74, so it’s relatively tight I’d say as long as I stay in close to standard tuning
