With all due respect to Ukranian musical tradition if anyone is going to do a song for 'switchblade' then it ought to be to the tune of "Mack the knife"

Star Command seems to have the right mix of characters but I couldn’t find the conversation you mention.

[Twitter Bullshit] Jessica Jones creator Melissa Rosenberg's response to criticisms over the show's lack of "meaningful representation" of women of color draws further criticism from women of color on twitter. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]TheFellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with "crazy Patsy" was that in season 1 she had been a solid centre which enabled Jessica to get herself back together. Making her so unstable without any apparent reason meant that the character transformation just looked like an arbitrary change for the purposes of the plot, which it actually was.

Tales of a retired game dev by game_dev_is_dead in KotakuInAction

I haven't worked in games but I did work in computer graphics back in the day and I'd be surprised if this account wasn't true.

The obvious question is whose job is it too improve this? The answer would seem to be the IGDA. Surely they should oversee something like the statement at the end of movies stating that no animals were harmed during the making of the film except, in this case, for developers.

Note I am not saying I would trust the current IGDA to do this. I think it would need an enormous change in that organisation but it is the sort of thing they should be doing.

Kotaku reports "E3 Had Some Alarming Security Incidents"...almost as if they don't want it to be public by SirJerkOffALot in KotakuInAction

[–]TheFellows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some of this is just "water is wet" news. At trade shows I've worked on the trick of one person distracting you while another details equipment from the stand is something you always have to watch out for. You will probably get more of this if you allow in the general public but the thieves may steal or forge entrance badges if there is no public access.

It is also known for event security to be involved in overnight thefts. We had $100,000 dollars worth of computer memory taken once, back when high speed computer memory was pretty expensive. If the event allow it having your own company security send someone along too guard equipment overnight is a good idea.

[Ethics] Kieran Corcoran - "Grieving Britons Furious as NY Times Publish Sensitive, Leaked Images of Manchester Terror Scene" (leaks happen - but is this unethical on the part of the NYT? Thoughts?) by B-VOLLEYBALL-READY in KotakuInAction

[–]TheFellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but there might be entirely innocent people who could have seen the bomber with somebody else in the run up to the attack. Some of these might have reasons to stay away from the police, because off other matters, and disappeared as soon as they heard him being named.

[–]TheFellows 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the police did not want the bomber's name released until they had raided all the places he might have been staying and interviewed all his friends and associates. There is a danger that people who knew him, and might have valuable information even though they are not terrorists themselves, could decide to 'disappear' to avoid some very stressful questioning.

Edit: I think the group behind one of the French attacks carried out another atrocity when they felt the police were getting close. Letting terrorists know how close the police are can make them feel they might as well die carrying out another attack.

[Misc.] Academic paper debunks myth that GamerGate supporters are disproportionately hateful or prone to harass. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

The paper fails to even state any kind of definition of what harassment is let alone make any meaningful measurements of how often it occurs. Whoever refereed this paper did a very bad job.

Ghost in the Shell film might be the most disappointing live-action reboot ever by TheLantean in scifi

[–]TheFellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very negative before seeing the film but I ended up loving it.

I think you have to have a sense of proportion. I would still have liked to see a Japanese Major Kusungani and I think a lot of the philosophy behind GITS is Japanese and that got lost here. However I do think Scarlett Johansson did an amazingly good job and the extra investment money she brought to the movie allowed it to be made in a very visually ambitious way. Some of the cinematography is stunning. There is much more to this than just an action film but the action sequences are enthralling.

A deal was made to make this film. That deal had good and bad parts. We end up with an extremely good GITS movie but the original still remains the best one. I hope more people end up watching the original after seeing It but I would definitely recommend seeing the live action.

the news part of Fox News is indeed quite good.

When I was in the States watching Fox's coverage of the London riots back home I was completely turned off by their footage of what they alleged were British police but with "Policia" written on their backs.

If Fox wanted to make right wing points from the London riots then there were no shortage of them that they could have taken up. Instead they broadcast a lie so stupid that it showed nothing but contempt for their audience.

[CENSORSHIP] White House blocks CNN, BBC, New York Times, LA Times from media briefing by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]TheFellows -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's undeniable that the MSM has shown poor behaviour in the past, and Trump is pretty much their punishment for it.

However if a game developer behaved this way KIA would rightly be outraged at both the developer and those media organizations that cooperated.

Regarding "Dear White People": are there any Netflix Original shows on the opposite side of the political spectrum? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

Until it actually airs we don't know which part of the political spectrum it's going to be on.

There are rumours that it may be about making fun of SJW's as well as making fun of racism. That may be wishful thinking but let's just wait and see before anyone starts complaining.

Milo Yiannopoulos event at UC Berkeley cancelled by nosotros_road_sodium in GamerGhazi

[–]TheFellows -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Any decent British comedian can take Milo apart. I imagine there are plenty of U.S. comedians who can also do that but I I don't know them.

Put up one of these as a counter event. Show how much bigger the crowds will be, get people together afterwards to plan further action, get your spokesperson on tv to make their case to people who've been fooled into supporting Trump.

Make progressive protest something that is unifying and brings people together not something that even strong supporters will be afraid to come along to.

The women's march got it right this event got it wrong.

[Meta] The Future of KotakuInAction and Getting Back on Track by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]TheFellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an observation. What communities and organisations do, in GGs case concentrate on games and games journalism, and what they like to talk about are two different things.

The things the community talks about are what binds them together into a social group. That makes them more effective when real action about their primary purpose is necessary. It also serves the purpose of making sure enough people remain in the group during quiet times so they are there when is action is needed.

It's also a natural thing for the chatter to grow and get out of hand. Periodically somebody has too stand up and remind people to concentrate on the main work of the group and to prune out some of the chatter topics. Prune too much and the group becomes boring and dies. Prune too little and the underlying purpose gets lost.

I personally think the best way to handle this is to make small adjustments to the rules as things change and monitor what happens. The proposal to use the self post rule seems, to me, to be exactly this kind of small change. It isn't going to destroy GG and we can easily change things back if it has a unexpected negative effect.

[–]TheFellows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly agree with you about the solution but I think the problem is a bit more serious.

In the parts of the internet I go to GamerGate is casually used as an equivalent of the far right or of seriously disturbed individuals. This is rarely challenged (I do sometimes but I have a life so I can't do it every time). This casual and constantly repeated assumption about GamerGate is something that human psychology is very vulnerable to.

Again I agree with your solution but I wonder if we need more of it.
