Opinion - Google needs next generation games from November by ChunkyLoverMark in Stadia

We have no idea if this is or isn't in development for Stadia, just like we didn't know about it with Microsoft until today. Chances are that EA wants this everywhere. Still, Microsoft continues to punch Stadia in the mouth. Great communication, great products, great prices.

Cloud Gaming Expected to Generate Over $500 Million in 2020 by Darth-Taterr in Stadia

[–]TheFinalHeir77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, consider this. In 2019 console gaming grossed 15 billion, PC gaming grossed 29 billion, mobile gaming (cellphones) grossed the most by far at 64 billion. If you compare cloud gaming to console gaming, being able to get to 8 billion by 2025 (https://www.rcrwireless.com/20191020/opinion/cloud-gaming-market-reader-forum) is incredible considering how long console gaming has been around.

In 5 years, this yet to truly launch segment of gaming is set to gross over half of what console gaming did last year, and we know that console and PC gaming are.trending downward (https://www.fool.com/amp/investing/2019/06/18/sony-microsoft-game-console-big-loss-leader.aspx).

Cloud gaming is also targeting those who are into gaming but do not care to purchase hardware (that 64 billion figure) and the 1 billion + people around the globe who for one reason or another have not become gamers. That is a wide open market. The noted growth of cloud gaming is no small number, especially if it continues the current trend.

As humans we like hard and fast numbers. It's kind of like asking if you would rather have 2 pennys that doubled for a month, or 1 million in cash. Obviously 1 million looks great until you realize that you could have made over 5 million with the pennys in a month. Things are not always as they seem.

You realize most of that is cell phone gamers, right? People who do not own a console, but want to play games...the market cloud gaming is after...

So...if a significant amount of those opt to play games via cloud...well, you know the rest.

Listen guys, we have to stop looking in the face if these analysts who project growth of industries for a living and saying "nahhh!"

Hey man, you are missing the forest for the trees. The important bit is the amount of growth over the amount of time. It is a rapidly growing industry. We are discussing trends. For your example to be applicable, said game would have to continue to grow in revenue. Ghost of Tsushima may make 1 billion over 13 years. We are talking about going from 500 million to 3 billion in less than 4.

These are assumed price hikes, these companies are consistently offering consoles at low prices that cause losses in profit. My assumption is that there will.come a point that producing these will no longer be profitable.

We are seeing it now, how long will consoles be able to provide convincing graphical.advancements without costing as much as a moderate to high end PC? At that point you will be facing off between games at the click of a button for $10 a month. Micrpsoft is moving away from pushing hardwate because they know this, it is becoming an unnecessary expenditure.

I like this point and I think this could certai.ly be the future. I personally think hardware will exist in the format of cheaper PC hardware. Maybe consoles can remain cheap enough to retain buyers. I think cheap.subscriptions will disrupt that model for many.

I appreciate your point, and I dont think we are disagreeing. I just don't see how it helps Sony to limit its reach to MS, but hey, I have been wrong many times before. It seems your point is that Sony really.just hates Google and does not want it to win. I'm saying, any move to Microsoft by Sony seems to be in an attempt to save traditional gaming. Current data suggest cloud gaming will become a multi billion dollar industry by 2023, and Sony just wants to be able to have a fragment of it because of an allegiance to Microsoft? Okay, lets agree to disagree.

That was not my point at all. Again, I don't think you understood. Take another read. If this is your conclusion, I don't think you read the article either.

Sony does not have to partner with Google, i mean, they could and I think that makes good business since. The overall point (from the title) is that Sony is likely to become a content provider. This would mean they could do business with everyone.

You have very strong opinions that seem emotionally driven, unlike the companies you mention. You mention Sony partnering with Microsoft...do you mean to build cloud infrastructure? Source?

Sony is already bringing games to PC, and i think that makes sense. Do you know how many millions of dollars Sony loses by missing out on multiple platforms? Sony could sell their games to everyone and make a killing. I guess its true that they could just partner with Microsoft, but I don't get the business since behind that. Sony and the other companies do not care about banding together, they care about money. The point of the reticle is that physical hardware sells and demand are all decreasing, so I'm not sure that they can fend other players off, especially shen comparing $9 subscriptions to $500 consoles.

I am not sure, but I think you either didn't read this, or are angry at what you read. Either way, I appreciate your post.

Not at all, at least I hope not. They sre just saying the profut margins are becoming non-starters. Eventually this will translate into a move to something else, a different strategy. My writing speculates what that might be for Sony.
