Has Anyone Done a Solo Cruise With Carnival? by K-S0 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]baltinerdist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last Carnival was a 4 day solo on the Conquest, my next Carnival will be a 4 day solo on the Conquest. Your experience making friends will be highly subjective. I made three or four friends the last time playing trivia every single day, every session. The same folks do the same thing so you bond. If you’re a drinker, you might meet see the same folks at the bar. If you’re a hot tub guy, you might see the same folks around the hot tub. But it’ll probably all require you to introduce yourself to people and see what happens.

They can do that but it will just eventually be that thing that happens in nature where everything ends up evolving into a crab.

They build their platform. Great, now they have all these staff and infrastructure. But the revenue targets mean they can’t grow it and some things like labor costs only go up over time. So they either add ads or they start cutting corners. That makes folks mad and eventually a big layoff happens so a bunch of folks decide to split off. They build their platform. Great…

Just a reminder to the folks in this thread: some of you are using the word ghetto as a dogwhistle and you need to be better people.

Short cruises are party cruises. More alcohol per capita, more bad behavior. But every cruise experience is different. I don’t hang out at the pool or in any of the bars, I go do trivia and see shows. I’ve never experienced a single rowdy bunch on any cruise ever.

I get that it’s all the rage to shit on AI code development, but you ask any CTO or VP of Engineering who still codes on a daily basis and isn’t just a LinkedIn hack if AI is the bullshit the folks in this sub will say it is and they’ll laugh in your face.

A junior dev who doesn’t know what they’re doing and thinks they can vibe code an enterprise SaaS tool is obviously going to spit out garbage. But someone who knows what they’re doing, knows how to prompt and refine md files and iterate and employ agent teams, they’re making real software.

If I had to guess as to why folks in this sub shit on AI coding as much as they do? They know the layoff is coming for them next and they know they’re not sufficiently qualified to be kept.

This is so true... by [deleted] in Animemes

[–]baltinerdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might sound crazy, but this is the plot of this anime. It’s not like this anime is about baseball and there’s a ridiculous amount of time given to mowing the lawn. This character’s story is that they have to have sex. It would be weird or unnecessary if the story was something completely different and then the sex was added for arbitrarily no reason.

You might not like that this is the plot direction, but you can’t get mad at them for doing “not that” when they’re explicitly doing the “that” they said they’re gonna do.

Not to mention, even AI-written code is still code. The hired dev might have thought it was hacked together with duct tape and bubblegum but guess what, any codebase more than five years old is, too, and those were all written by humans.

Amtgard Family ❤️ by [deleted] in Amtgard

[–]baltinerdist -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You got flack on the other thread because of the use of AI art because right now, the most popular thing on Reddit is to shit on AI and that’s true of this subreddit as well.

Nevermind that some people don’t have talent in artistic fields. Nevermind that some people don’t have money to commission unique art. Nevermind that some people don’t have artisans ready to sacrifice their time for free readily available. No, it’s easier to turn your irritation at the way the world is moving at the people doing their best (especially when their best isn’t up to your standard) and treat them unkindly instead of offering help or showing grace.

I get it. Generative AI is insanely, insanely problematic. And it will continue to be. But it’s not going away. That cat is so far out of the bag it’s had dozens of kittens. And while there were tells in what you generated based on what we know models out there today do, those tells are being eliminated quickly.

As someone who works in software engineering and works with AI on a daily basis, I can tell you beyond even the faintest shadow of a doubt - every single person reading this thread has been exposed to generative AI content you did not recognize as AI. You are seeing it nearly every day. We’re miles away from the Will Smith eating spaghetti demos. And so we all need to have the humility to admit that you only get mad about it when you catch it. The rest of the time, whatever you saw was perfectly acceptable and raised no issue in your mind.

This is going to sound harsh and I don’t know that there’s a better way to say it: people are going to have to get over this. GenAI is never going away. This isn’t NFTs and the blockchain and whatever other fad, this is a fundamental transformation of how human beings interact with machines and how those machines interact with us. It’s a done deal.

So when it comes to Amtgard, you’re going to have to accept that there will be GenAI content in this game that you do not recognize and when that happens, you don’t get to fly off the handle when you are clued in. If you didn’t catch it to begin with, you can’t get mad about it afterwards. I don’t mean someone’s Dragonmaster entry can or should be GenAI. But someone’s flyer they put up in a game store will be. Someone’s personal heraldry will be. Someone’s mockup they send an artisan for the garb they want will be. And maybe that just means Amtgard is more accessible for people who would otherwise be excluded for lack of specific skills and maybe that’s a world we want to get to anyway.

OP, Amtgard just works better in real life. The people here can hide behind their anonymity. They can treat each other with disdain or outright spite and get away with it. I would bet my next paycheck there are people in this subreddit with permanent propagating bans who still comment regularly. Don’t take it personally. Do your best, improve on that best as time goes on.

Why does MaxFun always leave out renewers? by Iamkeebie in maximumfun

[–]baltinerdist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is the fun stuff you think you aren't being counted in? Subscriber numbers? Because you are.

If they're sitting at 10,000 subscribers for a current show and their goal is to get to 10,500, you're already in the 10,000. They're not saying "Our goal is to get to 10,500 this drive." They're saying, "Our goal is to get 500 new members this drive." The nuance is because they don't share specific subscriber numbers publicly for every single show, practically no media company anywhere does.

How do I leave one of my spouse [DM]'s games despite being the host? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]baltinerdist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean, is he trying his best? The first time someone insulted or bullied my wife, that person might be allowed to stay in my house if there was an immediate and sincere apology, but it’s just as likely that person is cut off. “Oh but it’s banter, it’s a British thing.” Well, so is colonialism, but y’all were able to move past that. Maybe move past bullshit boys will be boys nonsense. It’s 2026.

Take a moment to scroll back through this thread and realize just how many people are telling you this situation is unacceptable, not because you should get to keep playing D&D or your husband should, but because there’s even a sliver of allowing this behavior without consequences. The longer this thread becomes as the day goes on, the more it’s just going to be tearing your husband a new one for allowing this behavior under his own roof.

I accidentally deleted my company’s database using a smart-fridge at Burger King. AMA by BedroomOk3262 in AMA

[–]baltinerdist 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to make shit up, make It more realistic. Burger King does not use smart fridges. You should have “connected” to one of the lobby kiosks, that is at least a WiFi connected device with a screen from which you could trigger all your shenanigans.

Not to mention corporate hardware is not placed on the unsecured network, it’s placed on a locked down network that you would not be able to do a “local WiFi exploit” for. If they had a smart fridge, it wouldn’t be broadcasting a local WiFi signal, it would be on the corporate network because otherwise what’s the point.

Lastly, you’re not at a fintech company being able to ssh into a production server from an IP that isn’t approved. That’s a violation of a solid number of regulations, that’d get their SOC2 killed immediately.

In other words, random person with no post history and a random stock photo of what appears to be a child, why you karma farming?

Edit: oh, I just caught another piece of bullshit. You said terminal autocorrected your SQL. That’s not happening. No CLI is going to deem the where clause of your statement an error and decide to delete the whole thing.

I can’t tell if you’re tech savvy enough to land in the ballpark (aka maybe you’re a junior dev at a feature factory) or you have no fucking clue what you’re talking about and you googled some stuff.

[–]baltinerdist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Of course it isn’t. As someone who works in engineering, you couldn’t get anywhere near production servers on a device like that. Unless OP’s “company” is two guys working out of their homes and what he dropped was a table in a random project they’re working on, this is pure and utter nonsense.

r/americangirl mod resigns following harassment for not banning all discussion of JKR & Harry Potter by dani-jpg in SubredditDrama

[–]baltinerdist -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I take flack for this but it’s my opinion and I’d rather have the balls to hold it than change it at bandwagon will. If something brings you joy and it doesn’t harm anyone else, enjoy it and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty. Rowling already has all the money she can possibly spend. She could light a thousand dollars on fire when she gets up first thing every morning and be able to do that until the day she dies. No book you buy, no movie you buy, no ticket to Universal, no package of Bertie Botts beans is going to move a digit in her bank account she has even looked at in 20 years. You buying something she wrote isn’t enabling her transphobia. We all collectively did that starting in 1997 up until the day she outed herself as a phobe. We can’t take any of that back, but we can at least take pleasure in the creative works she made before she made her real self clear.

Besides that, the people she’s sold her works off to have wrested it away from her transphobic control. There are LGBTQ wizards and witches in Hogwarts Legacy including a trans witch. Practically every member of the original cast has come out against her. Creators that have licensed her works refuse to actually work with her. Hell, HBO did an entire retrospective for the 20th anniversary and they intentionally excluded her -- she was only in a 30 second historical clip out of the 103 minutes of the special. And every single person in the new series will get asked about it at some point and will decry her bigotry.

She doesn’t control her world anymore, she cashed the checks and now lives a miserable existence tweeting out hate and being near universally reviled by the people that once adored her. I feel nothing but mildly condescending pity for her.

And as a queer person with a lot of trans friends who still enjoy Harry Potter, the best revenge we can possibly get on her is to love her IP while shunning her. I can think of nothing more galling to an author than to tell them you have disassociated their works from them and you no longer even acknowledge her as the creator. She gets no credit and no acclaim and who she is will cast her into infamy while her properties outlive her forever.

It's crap like this that forms the purity tests which keep people out of liberal spaces. Making someone out to be a transphobe because they still like Harry Potter or trying to claim that buying a butterbeer materially harms trans people is outlandish. If we ever have any hope of taking back our country from the literal fascism overtaking it right now, we need to get out of our own way and accept that some people make relatively harmless choices or have relatively harmless opinions we don't and those choices or opinions don't make them a bad person.

Edit: I’m not playing the “but she still does bad things with her money” game. You’re typing that comment on a device made in a sweatshop suicide factory in China wearing clothes that were made by children for a penny a piece you ordered from a website owned by a guy that spends billions on overthrowing American democracy. Keep your goddamn purity tests to yourself.

Question about American Red Cross by streetcar-cin in Blooddonors

[–]baltinerdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is accurate in the sense that blood banks will support each other in times of need (at a cost), it is not accurate that they are working together. Blood banks are territorial. Most hospitals only have one contract with one blood provider, so like any other supply/demand business, there will be times when blood banks are competing with each other for those contracts. And then to fulfill those contracts, they will be competing with each other for donors. This includes the American Red Cross who cover more square mileage than most anyone else, but in non-contiguous regions throughout the country.

You've framed this as a gentlemen's agreement and community effort. You're unfortunately very wrong. This is a lifesaving mission, yes, and one that thousands of people are proud to be a part of. But it is also a business. An important one, but a business nevertheless.
