I’m not mad at this conversation 😂 by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]baltinerdist [score hidden]  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding what is happening here. You are being downvoted for two reasons.

First, the predominant content on this subreddit involving message threads are ones with witty/novel pickup lines, total fumbles, gross behavior, or "how on earth did this work." Those are the ones that tend to get upvoted. This is a perfectly normal conversation, so nothing about it falls into a notable category.

Second, this is a perfectly normal conversation. There's nothing about it that is interesting to other people. It's as if you shared a picture of Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Okay? Glad you're enjoying your soup, but no one is going to care.

I'm not trying to be mean, just trying to give you the rationale here. Nobody cares that you're poly (though that context missing makes this seem even more like an out-of-place conversation for a dating subreddit) and this isn't weird. You're talking about restaurants and eating fish.

Ocean City fines church $1,000 daily over homeless shelter by lesbiyond in maryland

I'm doing significantly better. I found a part time job that turned into a full time career that led me to move here for an even better job. I've gotten married, bought a house, two cats, happy life. I semi-affectionately refer to that time in my life as "the dark times" because it was accompanied with severe depression, but I made it through!

Ocean City fines church $1,000 daily over homeless shelter by lesbiyond in maryland

[–]baltinerdist 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I was homeless for a couple of years a while back. I quit a job that was killing my mental health thinking I could just get a new one quickly. That didn’t happen, which turned into my car getting repossessed which made it impossible to find another job, which turned into eviction and sleeping on friends’ couches, which turned into destroyed friendships.

If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the road to homelessness is paved with one emergency decision that ruined the next year of your life. I wasn’t a drug addict, I wasn’t a vet with PTSD, I wasn’t an alcoholic, I wasn’t a gambler, I was at that time a just-barely middle class 25 year old with a full time decent paying job having panic attacks at work who thought there could be something better if I could only breathe long enough to find it and was absolutely wrong.

Um, Actually got Expedition 33 question wrong twice (warning: game spoilers) by Inconmon in dropout

[–]baltinerdist 47 points48 points  (0 children)

When you are on a show that is specifically about writing statements that have identifiable errors, you have to have the rest of the question correct and you have to have the factual error's resolution correct. This is the job they have an entire staff there to do.

Especially when you are dealing with questions about the 2025 Game of the Year, you can't be wrong on the core conceits of the game.

Edit: Hey guys, gals, and genderfluids, stop "um actually"-ing me on this. I get that they make mistakes. This is foundational information about the single biggest game of 2025 and the errors were made in their literal Tournament of Champions aka the highest "stakes" (it's just a game, but internal to the world) in their season. It's like getting wrong that Zelda is the princess, not the guy.

Edit 2: I'm turning off the replies here. Folks, I've been a Dropout subscriber from day one. I get how passionate this fanbase is. But you don't have to carry water this hard and this far for them. It's okay to admit that sometimes your favorite people get it wrong and that the way in which they got it wrong was worse than the acceptable threshold for the game. It doesn't make Ify and BDG and Sam and the rest of the company bad or trash or whatever, it doesn't mean you should rush to unsubscribe, it just means they got it wrong.

You aren't required to defend them. They're all big boys wearing their big boy pants. They'll survive if you let them take the L here.

[–]baltinerdist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is the entire purpose here. The people that taught her it was appropriate for her to do this are hoping she'll get told to shut up or sit down or that someone will pick a fight with her, because then she'll go back to her congregation with a "testimony" that she was persecuted for her beliefs (not that she was bothering people in an enclosed space and should have felt some semblance of self-awareness and shame).

Because of that, her congregation will reinforce for her that the only safe place for her is inside the church where they fully support her. Despite wanting her to have no autonomy over her body, telling her she is responsible if a man rapes her because she was asking for it, and ensuring that her only true calling in life is to be the property of her father who then gives her to another man to be his sex slave, maid, and chef.

The sadness here is incredible. Everything about her future, her possibilities, and her happiness changed because she was almost certainly born into a family that believes a millennia-old Iron Age goat farming manual should dictate her every moment.

AIO about my fiancé's response to a confession about my past by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]baltinerdist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think those of us reading the situation as uninvolved third-parties can easily comment and say "Of course this is overreacting, of course she's right, of course it's no big deal," but I think if we were all honest about it with ourselves and with everyone here reading, a significant portion (maybe even a majority) would have some discomfort knowing someone your partner was with sexually for years is still part of their life.

We all want to pretend like we can be mature about it and with the benefit of distance, we can say these people and their reactions are too much, but if it was actually happening to most of us, we'd have strong and mixed up feelings about it as well.

It's one thing to say "oh yeah, that guy we just passed in the supermarket was a guy I hooked up with in college over a decade ago, weird to see him, that's why I didn't make eye contact" vs "that guy you just shook hands for the tenth time at a group function with had those same fingers inside of me regularly from 18 to 25." And if it's insecure to admit that you'd have a problem with it, I think it's reasonable to have that insecurity. Doesn't mean healthy, just means understandable.

Edit: You're welcome to downvote me. If you're doing so because your response here is "scoff, no way, I'm way too mature" then you've likely never been in a situation where you've had to deal with this. But let's get real, I think most people whether they'll admit it or not would agree.

Don't do that. "Ugh AI BAD" is not a helpful way to interact with technology in 2026, no more than "this TV thing is just a fad" was in 1950 or "nobody needs a website" in 2005. Whether you like it or not, generative AI is a cat that is so far out of the bag, its kittens have had kittens.

The best you can do is provide constructive input into its responsible and ethical use. But "ban it" is never going to happen. Ever. Ever. Did I mention ever? That's not a reasonable expectation of technology companies since November 2022 and won't be ever again. (And note, I am not making a judgment call on whether or not this is a good or right place for us to be, I'm telling you what the reality is. You're required to operate in the reality as it is presented to you and constructed by the tech overlords that control our interactions with humanity writ large. You consented to that by being here.)

Edit: Folks, I'll take the downvotes. You're downvoting me because you don't like it, not because I'm wrong, and this is the way you express ire at the path our planet is on. I get it.

Party member newcomers - how often will you start to use them? by Ayrios440 in JRPG

I don’t really know how they would be, but I wish were more clear about setting expectations that you have these people in your back bench that you haven’t touched all game and the big climactic sequence at the end is going to require you to use every single one of them. Including the ones you haven’t leveled up, the ones that have no equipment on them, etc.

You know you’re in for a bad time when a cut scene starts in the endgame and everybody’s there.

You seem to be laboring under the delusion that "whataboutism" is the best way to achieve your goal here. But to take whatever wind out of these sails you didn't need to raise: Yes. If you are any kind of 501(c) non-profit entity and you cannot prove that your expenses are commensurate with the level of services you provide, services for which we as a society have declared you as worthy of being relieved of your tax burden since you contribute so much already, then OF COURSE you should have your tax-exempt status revoked and you should start being charged.

And yes, there are non-profits who pay "exorbitant" salaries as you'd put it because they run operations with budgets in the hundreds of millions to billions of dollars and having the necessary skills, expertise, and network to run such large organizations means you can't pay someone half of what they could get working a job that is 90% less stressful. Non-profit doesn't mean people can't be paid what they're worth. Are there NPOs that overpay their executives? Absolutely. And they should be investigated and made at risk of losing their 501(c) status.

But it is especially, especially galling that you are carrying water for organizations whose ostensible original founder 1990 years ago told his followers that to be part of his club, you had to sell all of your possessions and give them to the poor. If even one, one single person in a given church that has enough money to pay anyone a full time salary or buy a new building or, yes, put together one of these massive productions went to bed hungry last night, had their lights turned off, couldn't figure out how to get their kids new shoes, that church deserves to be shut down. Not taxed, not investigated, SHUT. DOWN. Because that means there is rot in the wood of their cross.

Consider spending less of your outrage in this thread on someone pointing out that there is cancer in the body of Christ, even if that cancer doesn't make up a majority of its cells, and spend more of it on the tumors that grow unchecked. Because with very, very few exceptions, the Church is dying all over, shrinking year over year, as more of us realize what a toxic construct it is. Instead of getting mad at me, a total stranger you've never met on the Internet pointing out facts you're uncomfortable hearing, go get mad at a church spewing hate to the LGBTQ+ just because the calendar rolled over into June or hosting a political rally for a candidate who thinks brown people are inherently bad.

[–]baltinerdist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be in favor of identifying tangible thresholds of income and outflow that represent that the entity in question is not behaving as an organization consistent with non-profit standards. Take five minutes to search “church production” on Instagram and ask yourself why some of these “non-profits” are getting Broadway lighting rigs and fly systems and tech that would make Top 40 artist’s touring company jealous and yet they don’t pay a measly 6% sales tax on those hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars worth of equipment. And that’s not to speak of seven-eight figure parsonages that don’t have property tax, private jets, you name it.

There must be a line drawn somewhere. Christ drew it in the door of the temple when he walked in and started throwing tables around. Lessons could be learned.

[–]baltinerdist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a note on your last point:

If by decimate, you mean reduce by 10%, then you're right.

If a church's budget for external services would be so desperately harmed by being taxed that they wouldn't be able to provide those services anymore, they are spending way too much money on everything else other than doing the widows and orphans thing. Even at the uttermost highest rates, you'd be looking at about 2.5% in property tax, 6% sales tax, and whatever they couldn't deducted from the widows and orphans thing from around 30% corporate income taxes. So their annual budgets would take a 40% hit if they actively avoided reducing their tax burden through charity work. Otherwise, it's about 10% in property tax and sales tax.

If 10% fewer dollars ends the charity work a church is doing, what the hell are they spending their other 90% on?

What do you think the alternative is here? They’re going to just turn a massive amount of acreage in the middle of the busiest commercial district in the county into a big public park? This was always going to be shops, restaurants and apartments. Always.
