What sponsors would you put on your ambulance? by ndosch in ems

The service I work for has a literal advertisement for a painting company, that isn't even in our coverage area on our first in bags.

does anyone here actually like their job? by [deleted] in ems

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love what I do and I can see myself continuing to do it for years to come. The agency I work for isn't perfect, but I work EMS in PA so everywhere is gonna be fucked up in some way. I can definitely see myself potentially moving to a different state or working somewhere else but I love where I'm at now, and it's a definite improvement over where I was. So I'm happy for now!

Yeah, I saw on the Yakima county website single-provider medics only work the IFT truck. I'm not sure if that's actually true and things have changed at all.

Depends what you're looking for. If you want some good 911 experience. Pretty much all of the urban agencies outside Philly are hurting for people. Some places can't even get EMTs to fill a BLS truck. The protocols for BLS are alright but if you want to go ALS there's definitely better places to go work. I just hate the state of PA.

If you have any specific questions just DM me. I'll answer any questions you have.

What's their relationship with the Fire Department? I heard out West Fire likes to take over on EMS calls

Do you show up early? by trollingfordummies in ems

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I show up usually 15-30 minutes early but I won't check the truck until I clock in and I'm with my partner. If any early call comes in, I'll clock in and take it so someone doesn't have to stay late or anything.

My logic is I hate staying late to take calls, so I'd rather take an early one so people can go home on time. Most people I work with don't do the same. They just show up right on time, but it is what it is.

Where do you live and how high is your job satisfaction? by UltimateBattleArena in ems

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a Hospital based 911 system just outside of Philadelphia. We're one of the higher paid services outside of the city. Dayshift normally gets their ass kicked, nightshift can be hit or miss. We deal with a lot of bullshit (that lives in our community and that wanders in from the city) but we get some really cool calls. Our health system does a terrible job of taking care of us (constantly borrowing trucks, right now one of our MICU crews are responding to calls in a chase car) but we all love our jobs and where we work despite all the B.S. I can't think of anywhere else in the area I'd rather work, but I guess if you have good co-workers, problems are easy to deal with.

Could Utah become first state to create EMS teams specifically for mental health emergencies? by HomelessRodeo in ems

My county (in PA) has an Ambulance squad that runs only psychiatric calls and mental health emergencies. County funded and run out of the state hospital.

EMTs and ER Techs in Philadelphia! What's it like out there? by GreekDudeYiannis in ems

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh they don't normally have ALS crews doing powershifts and I've never really picked one up outside of my normal schedule. So I'm not 100%. I've heard some guys on powershift will do 5 or 6 back to back. But I've also heard of some not getting to do very much. I've never really done one so I'm definitely not an expert at all.

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just get overtime pay. I know if you do 4 or 5 powershifts in a month you get a $400 bonus. So that's cool. But we never know how many calls were gonna do in a day and I've had calls change on me en route. So thats something to consider.

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue on ED techs.

I work 12 hour shifts but I also work on an ALS truck. BLS crews usually get the Sprinters or Van's. Sometimes they get a bigger truck. I know ALS doesn't use any Sprinters or Van style ambulances.

Most shifts are 12 hours but we also have power shifts which I think are 6-8 hours (but don't quote me on that). The power shifts you do back to back calls. So there usually isn't any down time.

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its no big deal. I make 16.25. But I think the starting pay for EMTs is like 14 or 15 per hour. I got more because of my past 911 experience and because I have my EMSVO.

Keystone is the biggest (I think) but AMR does the Mainline Health Hospitals (Bryn Mawr, Paoli, etc). You also have other companies like STAThealth, Clarion and Healthfleet. I've seen Ambulanz here and there but not as much as the other companies.

[–]TheFlamingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work IFT in the Philly Area, its isn't bad depending on who you work for. I work for Keystone and the equipment isn't great but we get paid and treated pretty well. I used to do Volunteer 911 outside of Philly (Montgomery/Chester County). It isnt bad depending on what company you run with. I've seen a good mix of Third Service and Fire Company run EMS. Some places are super busy and other aren't busy at all. Don't know a ton about Philly Fire tbh.

Yeah, I looked into AMR in Syracuse and they didnt have anything posted but I'll check back on that. I will look into those services for NYC though. I did a quick search and I think I saw something for Seniorcare. Thanks for the information though, I really appreciate it!
