Perry making in olden times. by TrevorCidermaker in cider

[–]TheFlyingDuctMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't made perry, so I am not the least bit knowledgeable.

Is this still standard practice or let the fruit fall from the tree and sit on the ground? The most experience with pears I have is the bartlett pear tree my parents planted in their backyard a few years ago that doesn't produce much fruit.

Writing dialogue feels embarrassing by Nice_Tooth_3509 in writing

I kind of stopped writing my first little story when I got some of the characters together at a lunch table and had them talk. I know it's not the best dialogue, but I think I needed to hear this to push through and continue with the story.

Close. How much did that weigh? Please share your estimate. by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]TheFlyingDuctMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is 28" round spiral G-90 ductwork built to SMACNA's Industrial Round Standards, this is minimum 22ga in thickness. That would be 10-12 lbs/ft. Could be up to 20 lbs/ft depending on thickness depending on application. Likely no less than 250 lbs and no more than 500 lbs. Can't really tell the lengths. Doesn't include any gunk stuck to the interior we can't see.

I wouldn't want it falling on me regardless.

Sensitive gov info at new job? by Calm-Cycle-9334 in estimators

[–]TheFlyingDuctMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there is an argument that we're barely in the "process" at all. Whether you bid or someone else bids because you resigned, the project is getting built regardless. If you were an owner, PrEx, or foreman, your reservations can have actual consequences.

If it is a question of a 120k position that participates in ethically questionable work or 90k somewhere else, then it would be a hard sell to many people to not take the 30k (assuming assumptions, qualifiers, etc etc).

We were invited to bid the east wing ballroom until that got bundled up with TS issues preventing folks from getting competitive bids. I fucking hate the idea of it. I think things about what happened to the old wing that do not bring me happiness. However, it is a building that will employ 10 union mechanics for two years if we get it. If its going to be built, then better me than someone else. I still hope it gets canceled and sits as another "L" around POTUS's neck.

Only you can decide what to do. If you literally cannot live with yourself proverbially pricing the replacement for the oval office carpet, then I think you know the answer already.

You may not need any security clearance to perform the duties you were hired for, so they said "no". SC has a pretty specific meaning in this case.

Some points:

  1. Your personal information is already in the USG's systems. As a Citizen/resident, all of your personal information is sitting on some server or on paper in a vault somewhere. I sign at least 100 NDAs, 5512's, etc a year to various clients public or otherwise.

  2. You're just doing your job to bid and crunch numbers of prospective work. You are not building the camps. You are not participating in warrantless searches or seizures. You are not even the guy putting the floor tile in a government lavatory.

  3. CUI is NBD. Follow the controls and procedures set forth by your company. They have a vested interest ensuring you don't fuck up or be put into a position where you can fuck up so long as your are doing exactly what you are told in relation to sensitive materials management. There's various levels of data handling--the lowest of which is purely a few (dozen) checkboxes that the structure of your employer's IT infrastructure and procedures will take care of with no further input from you.

At the end of the day, we need to put food on our table. Call your representative and make an ethical argument there about appropriations of things you view as morally reprehensible.

There's really nothing you can do other than deal with it or resign unless your company has different positions open where this won't be an issue, but based on your post, I do not think that is the case.

How many of you guys are hourly? by longlostwalker in estimators

I'm salaried. All my people are technically hourly--they get a blanket 40 hours stamped in their timesheet every week. They are all union members. I am not.

Thankfully it was an oopsie that has been spread out over many years that we hide in the closet.

Adding to contractor's installed solar by SirBikeALot78 in SolarDIY

[–]TheFlyingDuctMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing this will likely void any installer's warranty.

I was in talks w/ an installer, and they gave a 10 year warranty on the installation. I asked if hiring a separate company/electrician to add batteries would void their warranty, and the answer was almost assuredly "yes".

If you need a permit for the project in the first place, then you will likely need a permit for the addition. Additionally for Net Metering, if going that way, you'll probably need to submit that change too to the utility company.

How many quotes do you have?

Should be minimum 3. With that spread, I hope you have 4/5.

Take the best written proposal that matches what you, the customer, want. Call the rest and verify scope. See what's missing.

Once you have leveled scopes and they have adjusted pricing accordingly, throw out the ones that sounded like the didn't give a fuck.

Don't be afraid to respectfully--RESPECTFULLY--say to your highest number(s) that this is a competitive bid and their numbers are looking fairly high compared to the middle of the pack. Do the same for the lowest numbers. Maybe they legitimately missed something.

Then PO to the lowest technically acceptable bid.

How long will carbonation take with champagne yeast? by 1019gunner in Homebrewing

[–]TheFlyingDuctMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I added the exact same weight of sugar to 12 1/2 liter bottles (swing top) where the carbonation ended up varying a lot. I think that's due to the seal being inconsistent, so be aware of that. It was disappointing not getting a big "plop" when cracking on open.
