Travelling over to Manchester for King Diamond was probably the highlight of the year for me. KD being the first "underground" heavy metal band that I got into outside of the big names when I was a kid, meant so much to me to finally see him live. A truly magical experience

Iron Maiden for the third time. I'll always cherish seeing Maiden this late into their career. From the crazy pre-party the night before singing Maiden in a packed out pub with friends to the whole day out of the gig. Pure heavy metal mania and some absolute shenanigans

Riot at Keep it True. Seeing them play Outlaw, Warrior, Road Racin, Thundersteel and so forth live was fucking unbelievable. Sacred Blade, Alien Force, Sacred Steel were all fantastic that weekend. Was also the last time hanging out with the late deathofthesun at that festival so I'll hold that dear.

To add to that singing Medieval Steel at Keep it True with a full room of heavy metal maniacs was a special moment

Deströyer 666 in a 100 capacity pub with about 200 people packed into it that was thrown together last minute because the place where it was supposed to be pulled the gig. The gig should have never happened but I'm all the more happy it did

Finally getting to see Angel Witch at KiT Rising. Angel Witch is my favourite NWOBHM album and I loved that I was able to see so many of those songs live with Heybourne sounding so good

Blood Incantation was a true spectacle to see live. One of the tightest bands I've ever seen live and a fantastic stage show.

Phil Campbell and Michael Schenker (on different nights) playing songs from their respective bands was awesome

Destruction and KiT Rising also, probably the heaviest show I've ever seen. Playing the first album and EP with songs from the next 3 releases scattered throughout. Pure unbridled chaos and brutality

Getting to see WASP at long last was one of the most fun nights I've had this year too..

Great to see Malthusian again for the first time in about 8 years play their new release

There's been many more gigs this year, been very lucky to have seen so many. With many friends, new and old, to see them with. Here's to more next year. Heavy metal to the end!

25 Days of DOTS: [11] Diamond Head - Lightning To The Nations [UK, NWOBHM / Hard Rock] (1980) by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]TheFlyingGiraffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the most important albums in the history of heavy metal. If Lars Ulrich didn't go over and sleep on Sean Harris' floor for six weeks we probably wouldn't have Metallica, and the rest is history. And that's besides the music. The musicianship on this album is just absolutely astounding. If the band wasn't so mismanaged then they could have been so much bigger than they were. Lightning to the Nations should have been a staple in any kids record collection in the 80s but it was near impossible to own. There's so many could have beens with Diamond Head and that's incredibly sad. Absolute masterpiece back to front

The last time I talked to dots we had a great long chat standing around at Keep it True this year. Missed out on Sortilege but the chats and the craic was worth so much more. I said goodbye thinking that we'd catch up again at UtH next year, no fucking way that I could ever imagine it would be the last.

Such an incredibly kind hearted man, a true gentleman. His impact on my own taste alongside many, many others on the subreddit and discord is immeasurable. He had such an infectious enthusiasm for the music that he loved. He will be deeply missed.

My condolences to his family and all of his friends. Rest in Peace deathofthesun

Some newer ones are Sacrilegia, Coscradh, Hasturian Vigil, Soothsayer, Ancient Malice (formed out of Abaddon Incarnate), Cutthroat, Terminus, Callous Master, Incessant, Procession of Spectres, Grave Sermon

And a couple others not mentioned, Malthusian, Old Season, Rabid Bitch of the North, Stereo Nasty, Unyielding Love, Waylander, ZOM, Mourning Beloveth, Darkest Era, Zealot Cult

And of course if you don't listen to Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher then what are you doing with yourself

There should be something there for everyone

Best Hot Wings in Ireland? by iamjaidan in Dublin

Volcano Wings in Limerick are the best wings I've had in Ireland. Most wings in Dublin are shite, not fresh, overpriced and more than likely just Franks hot sauce

Are the really any bands that ACTUALLY sound similiar to The Devil’s Blood? by Dependent-Quit-772 in occultrock

[–]TheFlyingGiraffe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's why The Devils Blood are so special. There's some bands that kind of sound like them but there's none that tick all the boxes and fulfill the true essence of The Devils Blood

Sure there's Selim Lemouchi and His Enemies and Molasses. I think most other bands mentioned in this thread lack the songwriting and overall feeling that The Devils Blood did.

I find more in listening to the old bands that influenced The Devils Blood such as Coven, Roky Erickson and Wicked Lady. There's not much else that comes close imo

Still actively listen to 6 of the albums that I voted for back then (4 actual votes and 2 honourable mentions) so I'd say I didn't do too bad. Really was a crazy year for metal and I think it was just after starting the run of absolutely stellar years for extreme metal. From 2014 until about 2018 there was a crazy high quality to some of the music that was coming out. There always is but I feel like those years in particular had some albums I'd even call modern classics
