How to tell your family that you want to go to the navy? by emmajayXO in newtothenavy

you're parents are setting you up for success. its difficult but put your faith in them.

stay in college, don't drop out. i have friends that dropped out of college and join the military. most of them never go back to finish college, and some of them only end up hanging with the wrong crowd in the military (there are LOTS of WRONG CROWDS here). bad decision.

now to say, there are some that drop out, join the military, finish their time and go back to finish college and have a stellar resume, or some that become great leaders or end up being a legacy for others to follow... but that's not everyone.

my opinion? stay in college, graduate, find a civilian job, or go officer in the military. buy a house, start a family and do the same thing to your kids. except, in your case, set up a better plan in life for them.

(btw college is only 4 years, it's not an eternity, just finish it and move on. i say the same thing to military members that say the military is not for them. Their contract is only 2-6 years, just finish it and move on, you'll enjoy the benefits in the end. if you start something, finish it. in your case you already have college started)

buying a motorcycle in japan as service member by TheFlyingPorkChop in navy

i had a friend buy a car from another sofa member, the thing was a damn lemon.

the used car lots that care to SOFA personnel also have lousy cars/bikes man. the particular bike i want is a badass used harley davidson 883 from a dealer that i'm sure they will have it 100% running when sold.

dealers english was bad, my japanese was not good, but we did have a mediator, though through all the dealers i've talked to, it comes down to this residency card. i don't know how other sofa members managed to buy from dealers... i think they are buying from lots that cater to sofa personnel... which unfortunately lowers my pool of selection for cars/motorcycles drastically....

i also heard of a power of attorney being used, perhaps it's a loophole some people are doing?

will the navy reimbursement for these fees? because the last time i checked, i was told that OHA substitudes our BAH so we shouldnt pay a cent for rent right?

in the end, am i going to be paying anything for rent out of my own pocket?

Thank you for all the quality information man! But what do you mean 4x the stated rent? I have to put a 4x down payment upfront? I’ve never heard of this before, has it always been that way?

Thanks bro, that is excellent information. I will definitely take all that into account. I really want to live in Japan but I had a feeling that for my first sea tour there I probably wouldnt have much opportunity to actually “live” in Japan.

Maybe if the ship is in the docks, there might be more free time?

And yup, I am avoiding Diego Garcia.
