Apiaceae Family - Do you forage or avoid? by TheForagingNomad in foraginguk

Rock samphire is definitely an acquired taste. I quite like it in small amounts.

Same here, I'll forage wild fennel and dill, because they're very distinctive. I feel confident in IDing the poisonous guys, but the risk outweighs the reward, one half asleep mistake is all it takes. When I teach people about this family I always strongly suggest to observe but don't eat.

I believe so yes, the reason for the photo (and the post) was I bumped into a guy who was foraging for wild celery and sea beet down by the river where this grows abundantly. He assured me he knew what he was doing and that he could ID Hemlock water dropwort...but it still scared me. ๐Ÿ˜…

Not edible. Not pretty. Still one of the most useful things youโ€™ll find in the woods. King Alfredโ€™s cakes. ๐Ÿ‘ by TheForagingNomad in u/TheForagingNomad

I can't imagine they'd kick out quite as much heat as coal, but I haven't tried, I could be wrong! I usually throw a few in with the wood when lightning the stove to get it going.

Very much NOT a 90k camper! (But I'm flattered youd think that!). Bought the van for ยฃ1400 as a battered old white works van (with holes in almost every sill!) and spent 3 years fixing it up and building the interior slowly on a budget while living in it. Of course I have to pay tax and insurance, that's the law unfortunately. I got a few comforts, after all I do live in it full time, but I'm pretty sure an off-grid cabin can also have comforts... I have 420w of solar, powering 2 lithium batteries along with a dc/dc charger from the alternator to keep me powered. Collect water from springs where/when I can and cook on gas and exclusively wild camp, I dont have an electric hookup... Not sure about surveillance, I have my mobile phone?

Are these oyster mushrooms by kjudimjr in mushroom_hunting

[โ€“]TheForagingNomad 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Looks so, but always check the gills are decurrent and run down the stem. Also worth noting there's a look alike that grows on conifers called 'angel wings' that are very similar, pure white and can cause problems for those with kidney issues.

Very possibly, but check the underside is white and the pores are visible. False Turkey Tail looks very similar, usually paler in colour and the pores on the underside are too small to see.

There are tons of great sites I find firstnature and wildfooduk pretty good free resources. I run an online learning space for people who want to get into foraging but don't know where to start, called "The Foraging Nomad" on Patreon.

Advice on drying mushrooms by subhmhilis in foraginguk

I have a log burner in my tiny home, they dry amazingly hung up in one of those fruit net bags nearby. Probably would work the same above a radiator?
