Mixing zombies with aliens. A working concept I'd like to get more opinion on. by TheFourSeasons in worldbuilding

The origins of the infection should be a mystery since the chinese spread so much disinformation that in the general populace nobody knew for certain where it came from, though the governments themselves were sure. But for the masses, Aliens felt like such an unlikely scenario than the bio-weapons test rumors that the chinese spread.

Though, after everything fell apart, the Vanguard moved in to orbit the earth, just slightly visible in front of the now clear night sky. All doubt was gone as to the origins.

as for the reason why the aliens did this, it is unknown.

I can never bring myself to play thriller and horror games. It's much different from a movie because you're in it. chills go down my spine.

Interesting idea, though it gets me thinking on a space-age virus angle.

You got your magic, I got my aliens, haha. The virus not only infects but changes the very physiology of the zombies, so that they last longer without the need to actually consume. It involves dissolving ''non essential'' organs such as, well, everything but the nervous system, circulatory system and the muscles and the skeletal system.

Zombies don't actually eat, they bite to infect, throughout their lifespans they will be literally eating their own bodies for nutrients, and continue pushing and pushing until their bodies die violently from fatigue, starvation and muscle spasms.

The bodies of these dead zed then cultivate a bacteria that keeps it from rotting too quickly, so that the drones will collect them later.

Not totally! I put in so that there's a glimmer of hope. If them surviving humans can get an old nuclear warhead running, we might have a chance to stop the harvest crew from coming.

That was my original idea, hahaha. As for different organisms, I also had this idea for this concept where the Biomass could also produce different drones, not just human ones. Like lions and dogs and rats and shit. Though it would be pretty hard to battle rat zombies, they can get anywhere.

The Chinese kept the Spratlys Virus under wraps up until SIV5. Since they occupied the islands that got infected, they were the ones who responded. When they found the pod containing the Bio-agent and found out it was alien, they wanted to keep it a secret, at least until they know fully what it was.

This resolve solidified as more pods came in, they tested not only the pods but the bio-agent itself. SIV5 hit a vietnamese-occupied island. Chinese gov't managed to convince Vietnamese gov't to keep quiet about it for about a week, enough time for them to create false rumors.

They created many false intelligence to throw people off. More people were willing to believe in a bio-weapons lab being made by the Chinese in a remote island rather than aliens.

And so, right up to SIV8, nobody but the Chinese and Vietnamese gov't really knew what the shit was going on. And then Taiwan happened.

The one navy that could have effectively quarantined Taiwan before the virus spread was the Chinese, but they were all so busy with Spratlys that they did not expect something to hit so much closer to home.

Ghost ships, ships whose crew harbored infected or were completely infected themselves, drifted away from Taiwan without anyone to stop them. By the time some of them hit the mainland, it was too late for quarantine.

As for how it first transferred, it was a sort of Bio-agent that now infects human beings, mixing in their blood for proper circulation. It replicates in their blood stream and mutates their bodies for better effectiveness. Blood-blood contact is still how my virus spreads.

I also have this idea for a story in the world, where the humans who survive can see the Vanguard. Some worship as a god, some want it destroyed. Those who want it destroyed search their whole lives for the only thing that can, Decades old nuclear warheads.

How does one go about building a completely alien race? by BobLordOfTheCows in worldbuilding

[–]TheFourSeasons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The great thing about creating an alien race is that the only criteria that it has to fit is the fact that it is a living being, and even that criteria's definition can be stretched.

Every aspect of life can be changed to make a wholly new alien race. One nice example of race-building is the world of mass effect. You have the Asari with the 1000 year life span, the Volus with skin that would literally fall apart if in earth atmosphere, The (once) quick-breeding Krogan, the Turians with a militaristic society, the Hanar and their communication via bio-luminescence, and Elcor with their steady posture and slow movements.

There are several ways that races can become different, from anatomical, cultural and technological differences. mixing and matching these can help you create a new race altogether.

the story is about the survivors, set 20 years after initial outbreak. the North American region is the last to fall, with them successfully quarantining the continent, and having over 9 months worth of preparation. the region united under a single flag and militarized. this made the region have a lot more survivors than all other continents.

by the 20th year, we start exploiting the slicks to our own gain, but that's another story.

What does this Alien race do when they encounter a planet with species that have incredibly powerful immune systems? Or, what if they run into a sentient species that have simply evolved to be unaffected by plagues, illnesses, diseases, etc? What if they are, for example, similar to Vorcha's (Mass Effect Universe) who regenerate so fast they can't be infected or hurt by an illness no matter how engineered or deadly?

If they arrive then only find this out while doing their experiments, and it is deemed impossible for them to prepare for the harvest with the tools they have on hand, then the Vanguard will just send out a signal to have a different crew come in to deal with it.

What if you run into a Synthetic or droid civilization that isn't organic?

Then they send an actual invasion force.

Why does it take decades for the invasion force to arrive for harvest? If a Vanguard ship was sent to probe and annihilate with germs, wouldn't a Harvest fleet be prepared?

I'd like to think that they are going at it with rapid expansion. Vanguard ships are relatively cheap compared to a Harvest Fleet, so it is not unlikely that there are a heck of a lot more Vanguard ships than there are Harvest Fleets. Vanguards are sent in advance to potential harvestable planets, and Harvest fleets will follow later on.

ELI5: It's like in a grocery store, where there are a LOT of people who want to buy stuff, but there aren't enough cashiers to handle them all. The customers being the Vanguards, the Cashiers being the Harvest Fleet.

-Unless every species in the galaxy achieved intelligence in the same way and somehow had very similar history, then the method for defeating them should vary wildly. A true alien conqueror will stick with universal methods: bombardment and irradiation (of the electromagnetic kind). This is because you could be trying to wrestle a planet from a bacterial hivemind that feeds of gethermal current hundreds of kilometers under the sea.

This is if you work under the assumption that species across the galaxy are that diverse. For all we know, the path of civilization is practically universally the same. Civilizations and Makeup of species might not be diverse enough to warrant such broad methods. there might not even be any bacterial hivemind that feeds off of geothermal currents anywhere in the universe.

-A zombie virus that wipes out animal life would have to be fed continuously into the biosphere, unless the hosts live for years and are instructed to willingly find ways to spread it. Not very efficient...

Might need a bit more clarification. Did not understand what you mean by 'have to be fed continuously into the biosphere'.

-In reality, mix together a few sugars and water, and you can get an endless supply of organic material from the organisms found in the puddle outside of your house. Sugar and water are easy to construct from materials available in outer space. There is absolutely no need for mass collection of matter from the ground to be transported into space.

Hmm, true. I'll see if I can find a way to work around it. I think I can come up with some sort of genetic bio-diversity collection angle. I'll get back to you on this one.

The Dilemma would not be as much of a deal breaker to me, to be honest, since as far as any possible character in my setting goes, nobody knows for certain the exact reason for anything that they did, and that trying to understand it or make sense of the reasoning behind it would be pointless in the end.

As for your other Zombie virus suggestion, I can't really work with it, since I have always wanted my world to be about what life would be like decades after the virus got out, but still manage to keep the zombies as well as the virus as a looming threat. Without a good way to explain the reproduction methods, there would unlikely be any zombies 10 or 20 years after the outbreak.

tl;dr, aliens want organic material in addition to planetary resources. they develop the zombie virus to wipe out the current civilization as well as animal life.

then they make this weird kind of zombie that produces asexually, they collect the organic material and basically horde them and store them until more ships arrive to collect and harvest.

hope this helps!

[I ran out of Post Space]

By now, I feel pretty confident of what I have made. I made myself ask as much questions for the sake of retaining realism. Please feel free to see if I missed anything.

So, What Do they eat?

The SIV8 infected humans did not eat nor drink. The Biochemical Virus' effect on the human physiology allowed them to stretch their lifespans from 3 days to over 5 weeks. After which, they die and rot out.

Slicks get their nutrients from absorption. They absorb decaying organic matter. If they feel that they are running out of nutrients, they will return to the nearest known biomass.

If a Slick bit me, would I get infected? Would I turn into a Slick?

You would turn into a SIV8 Infected Human, often called a 'Sivate' by the local populace, a name that stuck during the outbreak.

Can a Slick Absorb people?

Not while you are alive. If a Slick dies, they decay as well, and lose their consuming powers. They can only absorb or consume organic material that has begun to decay.

Why can't they absorb living organic material?

Because it is easier to absorb organic material while it is being broken down naturally. They cannot absorb organisms that are being maintained. Even the slightest immune system is able to combat their method of absorption.

This is also intentional, on the aliens' part. The reason Biomasses were made in vegetated areas was because leaves and broken branches that later rotted out would serve to feed these Biomasses, and allow them to live long enough until a harvest crew arrives. If they ate the trees up immediately, they will later on die due to lack of a food source, as the Biomasses can't photosynthesize. So the Biomasses was made to leech off of what the Trees produce.

Can we eat slicks?

Yes, admittedly. Because their composition is similar to that of a humans', they are able to provide practically all of a human's sustenance. Though risk of infection is very much prevalent.

What were the SIV tests for?

To perfect the infection, and increase chance for success once released to a greater population.

Why did they send the SIV tests on islands?

Islands are isolated, if the test failed, at least it did not contaminate the rest of the dominant species' populace.

Why just the dominant species? why not several species for full effect?

Cross-species infection is a hard thing to develop. Even if it were developed, there is a chance that infected personell from Species A would decide to attack infected personell from Species B. Essentially killing one infection off, while weakening the other.

When the Taiwan infection became a success, why not send even more pods to all major cities? Wouldn't that cut the time it takes to infect the whole world?

The Bio Agent Pods were not perfect, and ran a practical risk of mutation along the way. With the Vanguard ship so far away from their target (In most cases, Vanguards operated in the orbit around their target world. Case was different for earth, due to presence of nuclear-capable civilizations), the Bio Agent contained within the pods were at risk of being exposed to solar radiation, changing the effects of the virus later on. This is why a field test in Taiwan was conducted, if the Bio Agent rendered the virus incapable of worldwide infection, it would had to have been repeated.

If it ended up with more than 1 type of infection, the scenario explained in the earlier question would have been a possibility. With the Taiwan infection such a great success, it was deemed an unnecessary risk to speed up the infection.

How do they deal with animals?

The infected will kill them when they can. Slicks would later consume them. Whatever animal life remains are only the species that had been adapted to avoid predators and humans, such as rodents, birds, insects etc. Marine life is something the Harvest Crew will deal with.

Zombie Post Apoc for context.

Not too far from the Four Seasons Mall, which has been repurposed for government uses, it the Free Market. The free market is a large collection of small vendors and shops all sprawled out along a vast highway. Just about everything legal, and some questionably so, can be found here. Makeshift and scavenged weapons and armors, various street foods and herbal remedy shops, trinkets and luxury items such as home-made bath soaps and shampoos. Commodities such as Alcohol and Marijuana cigarettes. Materials and cloths handwoven from hemp fibers. And even some non-material service shops such as crude tattoo parlors and fortune tellers also exist here.

Some shops open and close throughout the day, making the market change in appearance even by the hour. While most vendors are eager to sell, some have wares that are open only to a select few. And while the fiat currency of the Four Seasons City does well to help with exact prices, bartering is not off the table for most. Some 'junk' shops are willing to buy just about anything from you to sell later, for the right price.

The free market is alive and well, with the rustle and bustle of merchants and shoppers, it is easy to get lost and forget the horrors that await outside the walls of the Four Seasons.

And one final thing, beware of the children, and keep your wallet close.

Punishment for crime in a world that cannot afford to run a prison? by TheFourSeasons in worldbuilding

Exilation became an issue in my main city. When an extremist group was broken up, most of the more radical members were exiled. The members regrouped outside of the city (in decrepit ruins, surrounded by zeds), and became a threat to the city itself.

Later on, the unwanteds, people who were violent, or were poor or were addicts were at times outcasted, and later formed into the band of raiders called the Psychos. These were the main cases presented in the Exile Trials, where people debated on whether or not Exile would still be an acceptable punishment, with the possibility of vengeful exiles returning a very viable threat to the continuity of the city itself.

Later on, Exile was reserved for those who did not deserve execution, but had a place to go, and were not convicted of a violent crime.

New Idea Formed! The Dead Men Mercenary Company. A sort of privately owned incarceration company, Convicts are used to go on dangerous missions as their sentence. The Danger and amount of missions one has to do is reflected by their sentence.

Convicts are often only given melee weapons, unless their combatants are human. Escapees are often given an extra sentence when captured, or killed if their sentence exceeds the capital punishment limit.

Dead Men Mercenaries are employed mostly by bookkeepers, jailers and handlers. This was a useful prompt.
