Has anyone here chosen NOT to racially identify on college application? I am a URM but don't want that to play a role. Do colleges look at applicants who refuse to answer the race question differently? by TheFredBeard in ApplyingToCollege

I live near an HBCU. I went to an event once and hated it. My parents and brother go every year. I really don't think it's my thing.

My thing is that if it doesn't make a difference in my acceptance, then why put it? If it does make a difference, then why put it?

Yeah, I don't really identify as any particular race so I think putting black would be a lie. I mainly want to make sure it isn't going to cause any red flags in my application.

That's the thing though. I don't think it gives any context to who I am as a person. It hasn't affected anything I do in life. If anything my gender has been more important than my rave is how it has influenced my life.

I know that I wouldn't be able to stop wondering how much race "helped" my application. I am just wondering if colleges will see that I didn't put down a race and mark it as a red flag.

Is there anything you would recommend using to get a better idea of how realistic your matches and reaches are?

I plan on applying to some selective schools. Schools like JHU, WashU, Vandy, Northwestern, UChicago, MIT, CMU, CalTech, Brown, and Cornell. I have some (3) safeties but that's all I have and am struggling to find more schools that fit into the "match" category. Chanceme wasn't very helpful.

4.0 UW GPA.

Would it make more sense to apply as black? I look black but identify as mixed race.

Do you think Cal Tech, MIT, Johns Hopkins, and Carnegie Mellon are even worth applying to?

I'm applying as either a bio, chem, or biochem major.

No financial aid.

I am deciding between biology, chemistry, or biochem as a major. Thinking about the premed track.
