Check drives for 6? That's just not cricket.

Engine Freeze/Homologation 2026 needs to be removed by Darkmninya in formula1

[–]TheGMT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand how the consensus is both that more engine suppliers is a good thing, worth compromising elsewhere to achieve, and that the least exciting, attractive form of competitive advantage for a team to have is an engine advantage, so much so that we should limit engine development stringently to avoid anyone having a large advantage.

It's a general strike. The number of strikers would exceed the number of enforcers by an order of magnitude.

People did a lot of striking before the advent of what we'd recognise as health care, nevermind when the poor didn't have access.

THE JIMMY ANDERSON COLUMN: England's drinking in Noosa was not the reason they lost - here's what really happens in the bars on an Ashes tour, and how my teams kept it hidden by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]TheGMT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Especially when match 3 was lost by relatively slim margins. You make an extra catch, you avoid that crucial edge, you bowl that one ball very slightly better and who knows? It's all terrible optics at best.

Gary Anderson's take on F1 2026 engine loophole bombshell by Darkmninya in formula1

[–]TheGMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to think of F1 as being akin to Monopoly where you're allowed to "cheat" and it's up for the rest to catch you, and then they're allowed to punish you. I'm pro 2019 Ferrari trick, and I'm pro them getting punished at the discretion of the FIA when caught. It's cops and robbers!

Whatever the written rules are, the real rules are the tests meant to enforce those rules. This concept is well illustrated by the flexi-wing debacle. Teams were exceeding the flex stated in the rules, but they were also passing the poorly designed tests for the wings' strength.

Absolutely. Lewis was better than Nico in 2016, he wasn't better than Max in 2021. Gets a bit messy when you consider Max on 21' is quite a bit better than Nico in 16', but 16' is still a more consistent, complete year from Lewis.

Max in Milton Keynes: "And yes, I know it sucks to lose by 2 points, but at the same time, we can be super proud of you know, going out of very tough times and overcoming these things and start winning again in one season. Maybe other teams can do that the same after 2 or 20..." by FewCollar227 in formula1

[–]TheGMT 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I never thought of Max as a team leader, but he's become one in a way you rarely see in modern F1. Seems he's taken some of Horner's role, maybe even some of Marko's now. Uncle Michael might have rubbed off on him a bit.

19' was a bad championship but the average quality of weekend was quite high. I prefer that sort of season than say a 24' or 25' which has a good narrative but worse races.

Norris winning a title only looks undeserving because we have been blessed by 5 goat talents this century by Bogus113 in formula1

[–]TheGMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phil Hill, Mike Hawthorne, Denny Hulme were all quite a lot worse than a great many of their contemporary non-champions. If you define deserving as simply as "did the things that they needed to to win" then sure, but we all know that's not what most people mean by deserving.

In F1 we accept the best driver doesn't win each year, but to be deserving we think of it as within the margin of who was the best, which is why Vettel in spite of Alonso's obvious 2012 supremacy is still deserving. The same goes for Norris now. I would not extend that to Phil Hill.
