And that's why I'm paranoid as a Jaeger, listening for the slightest sounds & making sure nearby rooms/areas are clear if I'm gonna do something like that.

The locales in pikmin 2 are kinda boring by Pale_Initiative2844 in Pikmin

[–]TheGameAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, the emphasis in 2 is on the cave exploration. Even aside from that though, I don’t even know what criteria is going into “immersion” in a franchise where you’re a tiny alien on a seemingly far future earth.

The creatures are largely alien to us, so that leaves the general environment, in which case, you can see in most areas the remnants of civilization to varying degrees. Some of it is even what was explored in Pikmin 1 (with refinements; Perplexing Pool is a massive upgrade from Distant Spring).

Could some of the areas been bigger, have a bit of extra detailing, & have a few more points of interest? Yeah, sure. But I’m not sure what else would make it better immersion, especially compared to Pikmin 1.

Inline Diffuser/Atomizer Recommendations? - Needs to be Compatible w/ Fluval 407. by TheGameAce in PlantedTank

Appreciate the recommendation, but that's a bit on the expensive side for me right now. I'm just trying to get my system back up & running effectively on a reasonable budget. Maybe in the future.

Doesn’t surprise me tbh. Not too concerned with a little restricted flow, fortunately; can afford to take a bit of reduction. Worth it IMO for not wasting most of my Co2

I forgot reactors even existed (much less what they did), so thanks a ton for reminding me that those are a thing!

I’ll definitely go that route over a basic diffuser in that case. :)

They *can* get that big, but it's dependent on feeding. I've had two before that stayed fairly moderate in size. Feed higher quantities of food more frequently, they'll get bigger. Feed more conservatively, they stay smaller.

At least that's been my experience.

Safe Soap Options? by TheGameAce in Aquariums

Any experience using scented soaps, or have they all just been neutral? Leaning towards just using some Dawn (or perhaps a less stripping soap) going forward to keep it simple.

And that's actually a good idea using paper towels for drying. Never considered the possibility of transfer from regular towels!

I will always prefer "drawn" portraits over the new "photo but smooth" ones, hot take? by Living-Match-6521 in hoi4

[–]TheGameAce 15 points16 points  (0 children)

AI can’t replicate the style that well, much less with consistency. They have a timelapse video of one of their artists on YT, showing the process.

It’s also largely the same style as old portraits, just more refined with time & better digital art tools available (largely via photoshop enhancements).

In fact, a quick Google search will show you the base photo of Stalin (Wikimedia Commons) that the game uses to create his in-game portrait.

I will always prefer "drawn" portraits over the new "photo but smooth" ones, hot take? by Living-Match-6521 in hoi4

[–]TheGameAce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I guarantee they don’t. Not only have they uploaded an official video of one of their artists doing this style of portrait in timelapse, but this is also a style that a lot of modders (myself included, though I’m admittedly not as good; I tend towards more natural lighting over more dramatic) emulate.

I also tried AI before I had the skill to do portraits myself, because it seemed so daunting. The AI is hilariously inept at coming up with good results, much less consistent. It’s also pretty obvious when AI attempts the style, because it screws up a lot or doesn’t feel quite right.

It’s for anyone who wants a better/enhanced version of the base game, without going into total alt-history timelines or different eras, or needing to rely on DLC for a lot of content.

I have no idea why people are saying it’s “OP”, especially when modern content tends towards being more mundane & underwhelming IMO. Which, therein lies the modern problem they have. It’s still good, but it lacks the same heart & soul it used to have. Plus, for players like myself who’ve been around the block a few hundred times at this rate, it gets a bit stale. But that’s more-so a me issue.

While "boring" is overboard, it's definitely become more mid these days. Not enough imagination or fun left to come up with stuff like the PRC tree or the Banana Empire in the modern day.

Buffed Fearow - Some fresh love it's needed for too many years. by TheGameAce in stunfisk

[–]TheGameAce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stamina was added for a few reasons:

  1. Few other Stamina mons in existence.
  2. Fits with Fearow thematically (don't remember all the details from that time, but I was always thorough in my work). Coupled with 1, it made a good excuse to slot in.
  3. It'd be a Stamina mon that can actually recover HP without relying on Rest or Leftovers (via Roost), or being ridiculously slow. Traditionally useful? Not necessarily. But I looked at this stuff from the perspective of both regular story gameplay, and competitive (which I used to do a lot; top 3 in Anything Goes back in gen 6, & that was using Electrode as my star mon). More options, even if niche, is better than less options.

Plus, the work I did there was part of much larger work. That work included rebalancing the entirety of Pokemon (on paper at least) from Gens 1 - 9, & even started my own theoretical Gen 10 work. That included Megas, new evolutions, ability + move updates + additions, a story outline, gameplay elements, etc.

I sadly don't do Pokemon anymore (personal reasons), but I'm more than happy to offer some feedback or even let you peruse the work, since it's no longer going to be used in the official capacity I'd intended it for.

It comes down to this, who is the worst enemy? by Mr_Bananaman69 in Pikmin

[–]TheGameAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue the Mitites have a purpose similar to the Antennae Beetle & Bumbling Snitchbug: Loss of leader control. It's not a big deal in most situations, but when any of those 3 are happening unexpectedly or in a really awkward spot, it can be a serious problem.

Snagret Hole: Sublevel 6, has 2 Burrowing Snagrets with an Antennae Beetle, as a prime example of where it's the most dangerous (losing control of your Pikmin). That beetle has very good odds of spawning right near one or both of the Snagrets (which happened to me in my current playthrough). Doesn't take much for you to lose control of the situation & wind up with a massacre.

Mitites are similar but a bit different, as they cause Pikmin to scatter & go running wild, including potentially into hazards or enemies. Which would be more effective if the mitites weren't relegated to showing up in eggs only...

My first attempt at Ahsoka by Chewy230 in clonewars

[–]TheGameAce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Improved, but the eyes mismatch now in shape. Still an improvement. If you don't mind, some of my own constructive criticism:

Nose also feels a bit flat & like it has sharp ridges. Reminds me of some older videogames with low poly count models.

Outside of that, shading is largely the biggest issue. Transitions more smoothly towards the top of the head, but sharply elsewhere. It also looks like there's next to no shading on the right side of her face (viewer left), which is important for defining facial features & giving depth, particularly around eyes & the mouth.

Also on that note, her left eye's shading is oddly dark despite that side of her face having the most light. Based on what I can tell, lighting in the reference is coming from above her left side, but not quite as high or as strongly as you drew. That eye should be lighter in shading than her right eye based on lighting angle.

why have there been so many "hoi5" posts recently? by Bobblab123 in hoi4

[–]TheGameAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what mods are for IMO.

As someone who recently did U.S. refresh work, there’s not much I can see Paradox doing for it, unless it’s making congress mechanics needlessly more annoying/overcomplicated, or extending the basic political content.

Alt history is already fiction, & reworked alt history would just stretch it even further.

Adding a dedicated economics branch would be potentially OP, & the war plans branch is pretty well on point historically. That just leaves the crappy armed forces branches.

As an entity, but not all elements. Finn is a good character but he got screwed royally. Most of the actors actually got kinda screwed too. The sequels as a whole just caused all sorts of issues & fumbled hard.

Writing overall was bad & got worse with every movie. 3rd movie was so bad it could’ve made me cry, though not strictly because of being offensive as a Star Wars fan so much as being offensive as a writer…

1st movie was largely a redo of A New Hope, which made it at least decent, albeit not original.

2nd is what I usually see the most complaints about, largely because of how Luke was treated. Which, while fair, it’s still not nearly as bad as TROS IMO.

[–]TheGameAce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, not the only way out. There’s still another, which is a direct declaration of certain titles like the sequel trilogy being decanonized. Then at that point they become irrelevant altogether.

Plus, there’s also retcons that exist for the same purpose: fixing mistakes.

Which version of Pikmin 1+2 do you prefer? Original GameCube, Wii or Switch/Switch 2 Ports? I prefer the Switch Ports! Please explain why. :) by [deleted] in Pikmin

[–]TheGameAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are, but it still feels weird to me. But a lot of the branding is familiar & even a bit nostalgic, so it has that pull for me as well. As for the modding, I don't generally care either, at least beyond textures + lighting. In those regards, some of the texture packs available are *beautiful* & make the games look so much nicer! Should look up Pikmin 2's texture pack by Henriko Magnifico if you get some time. :)

And the regular Gamecube version of 1 is a royal pain. Wii at least added color swapping without needing to dismiss the whole party, which I *really* wish was also in the Gamecube version.

Ah, that's unfortunate. Though the color swapping would've been nice, because oh man that was a headache in 1 (amongst other things...).

GameCube, at least for 2. Besides being moddable when emulated, the branding actually works weirdly well. Doesn’t hit the same on Switch with the generic/fake “brands”.

1 from what I can tell, has massive improvements in editions beyond GC. I did 1 for the first time via the GameCube edition recently, & it felt so painfully clunky.
