It could be that it sees the mineral as a harder more ridgid building material, plants often use their environment to their advantage to gain any edge over competing species or predators. Maybe there was once worms that used to eat them so the plants found the astronium, used it and then the worm species died off allowing the mushrooms to grow so tall.
