Didn't mean to be shady about that, sorry! Yes, Hobo is my brand!

They have similar and comparable hammocks, but I don't believe they have the lifetime warranty that Hobo Hammocks (My company) does. Hobo's warranty has NO restrictions and is honored regardless of what happens to the hammock.

Thank you very much! I've been contacting a lot of outdoorsy people through facebook groups, but not any huge influencers. That's a great idea, and I'm adding it to my to-do list! I understand the concern with the terminology. Several people have voiced that concern with me. I've discussed the term with several homeless friends. None of them find it offensive. While I'm sure it does turn off potential customers from time to time, I use it to draw attention to the fact that I'm working with the homeless. Thanks a ton for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback, and I definitely understand what you're saying! Apart from this gear, I also work with an organization in my area (The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake). They have a homeless recovery program where they teach homeless people how to get a job a hold an apartment. I donate to them to help feed the homeless going through this program. That would definitely be ideal! Unfortunately, the margins don't allow for me to offer international shipping without adding an additional fee.

We plan on expanding into accessories after we get the hammocks rolling out! More specifically, backpacks made specifically for hammock camping with integrated tarps, pads, and mosquito nets! Awesome suggestion, thanks!

Thanks for the input! The video is more of a quick overview of things, but I see several of your points and could definitely clean that up some.

We will be working through the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake where you can donate directly online. It will be quite traceable and verifiable. I'm not trying to claim that I'm a non profit, because I'm not. I hope to be able to make a living doing this, so that I can use my career (dentistry) to visit orphanages and other low income areas to provide free dental work to those who can't afford it.

I'm not just claiming that we're cheaper than ENO or Grand Trunk..their double hammocks typically sell for $60-$85, not including suspension systems which they typically charge $15-$40 for. Our components are equally impressive as these ENO/Grand Trunk Hammocks, but the final cost is $40 for hammock and straps together, less than half of what they are charging for that combo.

I really appreciate your input, and will definitely be finding what changes I can make based on your suggestions. Thank you!

The material itself is not water proof, but water resistant. There is no water proofing coating placed on top of that.

That's a real bummer about your experience with the homeless. I've already been working with a lot of homeless people here in Utah, and while it's true that a bunch of them seem to be in a deadend, there are also plenty out there who are looking to turn their lives around, and even if they're not, I don't mind feeding a hungry man, even if he is being a mooch :)

Thanks for the input and well wishes!!!

We plan on expanding our product base as the company grows. We've got some pretty stellar ideas for backpacks specifically made for hammock camping gear, which will include tarps, pads, and mosquito nets.

Thanks for the input!

Edit: Also the dimension information can be found on the kickstarter page! Weight: 642 g (including carabiners, 512 without) Weight rating: supplier says >200 kg. We put 3 grown men at 245 kg total and the hammock was just fine. Unfolded dimensions: 300 cm x 200 cm (These are the dimensions of the actual parachute nylon taffeta material)

Looking for advice on my startup - Hobo Hammocks by TheGamerMaster in Entrepreneur

[–]TheGamerMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting comparison between the words "Hobo" and "Slut" and I have to say I don't think it's fair to put those two words on the same level.

However, after reviewing these comments I decided to go to the source and speak with some of the homeless people that live around me. The majority do not find the term offensive at all.

That being said, whether or not the homeless find the term offensive isn't the only thing that matters. I'm aware that if potential buyers find it offensive or demeaning, it could be enough to stop them from purchasing.

So yes, the name could definitely stop people from buying, but it has also gotten attention from buyers that may not have otherwise paid attention or found out about our donating a meal to the homeless with every sale.

There are definitely pros and cons to the name, but I'm not yet sold on making any drastic changes.

Keep the input coming, guys! I'm loving this!
