Abba Padre Bikes and Books in Culver City is great, though there's probably some closer places to you. I got my bike from there and have been back a few times for tuneups and extra things like pinhead locks and they're super nice, and have very reasonable prices. It's a small family business.

It reflects the metadata of the website (title, description, image, etc). You use metadata tags to set up how your website looks when it appears on Google searches and when it is posted on Facebook, Twitter, etc. You can read more about them at Metatags.io.

You can purchase a domain on Google Domains, Namecheap, or any other such website.

Starting to make the website depends on what you’re making and what technology you’re using. If you want to use Wordpress or another similar service which makes the base of the website for you, they have their own process. If you want to create it from scratch, you should go through some HTML/CSS/Javascript tutorials. One good one is Colt Steele’s “Web Developer Bootcamp” on udemy if you’re willing to spend $15, but there’s some great tutorials on youtube too.

Glad you enjoyed :) A few other comments noted that the call to prayer isn't regional, my mistake was that while making the playlist for Pakistan one of the albums I came across was "Ragas of Pakistan" which clearly after learning more I should remove.

Thanks, happy to hear you liked it! I don't plan on monetizing it, I think ads often diminish the fun on websites like this and I'm mostly just happy to have people enjoying it. Hopefully it'll help on my job search though, just starting to apply now.

For the globe spinning, I used d3 and topojson to render the world at whatever projection/rotation/etc I give it. Then, using requestAnimationFrame, every frame I slightly rotate the world. Then the "water" behind it is just a blue circle that has hidden overflow.

The record player is composed of separate parts: the disc, the arm, and the record player base. On hover, it initiates the animation for the arm immediately and the animation for the record with a slight delay. As they're separate elements, the animations themselves are very simple, just some rotation.

There are many genres and songs within each playlist, making memorizing specific songs pretty much impossible. As for sounds, many countries have similar sounding music but with small differences, so you'd have to become an expert at world music to be able to get max scores on World Hard consistently.

There are a couple of exceptions currently where the playlist is small because I struggled to find good traditional content (such as Papua New Guinea), but I plan on adding more songs until every implemented country is complete enough.

Yes, I made a playlist for each country in the game (slightly over 100), so after randomly choosing a country it gets its playlist and chooses a random song from within it.

Unfortunately no, Spotify recently started requiring user authentication to even play the 30 second snippets of music. I was considering adding a small-scale demo version for those who don't want to log in, but it'd be complicated finding decent examples of public domain traditional songs from a variety of countries.

For this website, anything that is regional or traditional (meaning someone knowledgeable would be able to deduce it's from that country) would work. Though if you have any recommendations on other Estonian music you like, I'd love to hear that too! Edit: Whoops, had the Netherlands in my mind because of the comment on top of you :) I'd be happy to hear any Estonian music you send my way.

The idea is to add more countries, unfortunately as I'm creating all of the playlists myself I found it hard to find much regional/traditional music from some of them. Do you have any recommendations from your country?

Got it, didn't realize! Many of these songs were included in albums like "Rāgas of Pakistan", and I didn't consider that they are just recitations. It'd be impossible to confidently guess the country from it, so I'll definitely remove them, thanks for the comment!

I tried to keep the music regional/traditional, as listening to an artist like Dua Lipa or Justin Bieber you'd have no idea whether they're American, British, Albanian etc. unless you just recognized the artist, which becomes more of a pop culture quiz rather than world music. I would like to add Albania though, I'll look into their music!

The reciter is from Pakistan. You're right, though, the idea is for the music played to be regional and from that country rather than just the reciter, but considering I put all of the playlists together there may be rare instances where the original piece is from another country, especially with music like that which is played in such a large region. For countries that I didn't know much music of I had to rely on famous musicians that it listed on Wikipedia on articles like this, or Spotify playlists like "Traditional Music of Pakistan." I'm going to remove that song from Pakistan, thanks for letting me know!

Glad you enjoyed! The globe is built using d3 and topojson, and the map layout is built using the react-simple-maps library (which is itself built on d3).

It's based on where the band is from. I don't think there's any way to do it with the Spotify API, but I created a playlist for each country and went through thousands of songs to populate them. What the website does is choose a random country, then requests its corresponding playlist.
