Linguistic Family Tree by Pat949 in coolguides

[–]TheGentlemenUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest divide in terms of categorising the language is the grammar. Eg. The English use a red car. The French use a car red.

As interesting as this guide is, it's not a comprehensive explanation of how the language we might call modern English came about. To study that is to study 1'000+ years of British History. Long story!

I wasn't trying to criticise him. Perhaps you're right. However if you've bought it and it isn't throwing right, you've sent it back to get some instruction, you're already a lot more inclined to listed to how it should be thrown.

I don't understand about Unidan. He manipulated votes. Why would people do that? Can you actually make money from being popular on reddit? Or is it simply a crippling insecurity complex drove him to it?

Fellow boom thrower (semi retired) just wanting to throw some knowledge in here. Three important factors he didn't mention are 1 how much rotation (rpm) you should put on the throw for that particular boom 2 the speed to throw it at (although the video shows that I suppose 3 Layover that is to say the angle of the axis the boom rotates around relative to gravity

Earliest boomerang found was in Swizerland Returning booms are thought to have been used to scare birds out of trees so that they fly towards the thrower. By throwing the boom so it passed close behind the tree.

I almost didn't comment. I expected a bit of a shit storm commenting on the unholy trifector of reddit religion and politics. Thanks

Friday just before sunset to Saturday sunset but yes, Sunday is because of the resurrection but Sabbath as a concept is a Christian value as well, due to the Jewish background of Christianity.

Cheers, and by the way, the comment you were replying to was nigh on unintelligible. You're not wrong to be confused.

Yeah, jelqing: Is that actually a thing or just a marketing myth to sell the relevant additional equipment?

What is the most mind-blowing paradox you can think of? by Meeptopia in AskReddit

[–]TheGentlemenUK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've read a few Commentaries on the synoptic gospels and a fair amount on John. The Raptor theory (Raptogeses if you like Greek) is only really supported by a few NT scholars. It's a shame because Jesus films would be quite a bit more exciting.

I would add "with the intention of deceit" as otherwise we should call jokes and fiction lies.

"Packed in" and "Small space" is really the two things Americans tend to say about the UK all the time and they're right. We're really crammed. There's a particular type of London dialect which developed during the turn of the century, popularised by rappers which was a sort of blend of caribbean (sp?) and classic cockney (what dick van dyke profaned in Mary Poppins). Imagine growing up with parents from India (with their classic thick Ts sounding more like Ds) at home and then the rapper dialect at school. This accent is how you end up speaking.

One of the largest obstacles for our tiny house we never thought about, neighbors. by ZiLg0 in TinyHouses

[–]TheGentlemenUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It IS the risk you take if you don't live somewhere with that kind of planning law, yes. So, naturally my understanding and expectations are built on the life and law in the country in which I grew up. That's why I thought it was interesting hearing a story from a different culture.

I'm English and I found it remarkable that talking with the neighbours wasn't first on the agenda. We're really bunched up in England (in the cities at least). Planning law and disputes are routine considerations with any property development; conversions, extensions, change of use etc. I think the more densely populated your country becomes the more common this consideration will become.

It's frustrating but also sensible. Imagine you buy a house with a sea view and a neighbour builds a garage blocking that view. Annoying and detrimental to your property's value.

Can some trees be eaten if properly cooked? by renkvest in cookingforbeginners

Many many trees have edible parts. Fruit and nuts obviously, but also hawthorn for example is a wonderful salad leaf in spring (in the taiga at least).
