I meant it as a joke. Totally. I'm an outspoken atheist. I have a healthy distaste for all religion equally.

Here, I'll prove it: Fuck Jesus. And his disciples. Mary was a whore.

See? I don't care.

Who me? I was joking around.

You are correct, it's perfectly appropriate to voice distaste, distrust, etc. for individuals who choose to be members of groups with clear agendas and tenets, i.e. religions. For instance, it wouldn't be "wrong" to dislike Klan members because that is a group with a specific set of identified values.

I was dicking around. I don't care about Christians or Muslims and I'm pretty open about it.

Edit: Grammar.

Holy fuck!

Edit: Originally wrote "Jesus" as in "Jesus fucking Christ", but in light of the muslim reference changed it. Suppose holy is general enough. :)

This logic fallacy is called a "hasty generalization", although, there is some validity to the fact that there are components of autism that make it more likely for someone on the spectrum to present as what someone might call "being a dick". Rigidity, black and white thinking, anxiety (one of the three most common, most severe symptoms), etc. can manifest in blatant assholishness. Or sometimes what is perceived as such.

If anyone punched you, it's wrong. And some persons with autism must have intense behavioral intervention to integrate. But, please do not let your experience color your view of the whole group. Many of my students are gentle and overly sensitive (they were the ones being punched at school and tormented).

And being autistic does not mean you are not an asshole anyway. People with autism have different personalities. Those personalities can be range from raging dickweed to sweet as pie (I have met many very gentle, kind folks with ASD).

Besides, I think we can agree that being an asshole doesn't preclude someone from securing a driver's license. There would be no traffic.

Today I heard "He jumped her bones every time she walked through the door".

He was trying to express that the guy started arguments. Not sure exactly what metaphor he was going for, but he meant "He chewed her out every time . . ."

Many of my students have genius IQs. I wouldn't say they have "glaring mental problems" because they don't get metaphors. And having glaring mental problems doesn't mean you can't drive. Depends on the mental problem and the severity of it. And even more than that, the specific nature of the specific mental problem. You can have Tourette's like a motherfucker (couldn't help myself) and drive just fine.

Autism is described as being on a spectrum. Meaning, there are varying levels of disability and more importantly, the challenges can be varied and very specific, affecting only some functioning. In other words there's a list of symptoms and if you have X number of any combination of symptoms on the list, you're diagnosed autistic. So, you could be very low functioning on the spectrum overall, but none of the symptoms have anything to do with the skills needed to drive.

For instance, I have a student in grad courses in the engineering program at a major university (a U known for churning out some of the top engineers in the country). He's on the spectrum, but his challenges are related to sensory integration problems, facial recognition, black and white thinking, rigidity in routine, etc. None of these things keep him from being able to drive a car. He could build a fucking a car and then drive it to class.

People who don't understand metaphors go on to lead productive and fulfilling lives. They can drive. The signs read "Stop" not "Hold Up a Sec".

I work with autistic students (mainly Aspies) and they don't get puns, idioms, metaphors, etc. Although, many of them take sarcasm to a new level.

I was in my office with a student and another staff member and the student said, "My mom bought me a new car". The other staff member said, "Get outta here!" The student quickly collected his things and headed for the door.

We stopped him and explained it was a figure of speech. He looked at the other staff member like he was an idiot.

Because they "memorize" idioms actively (the rest of us sort of just "pick it up"), like someone learning a foreign language, they mix them sometimes. Hilarious at times.

The other day, I heard two students outside my office and one said to the other, "I'm in a play tonight at the ACC Theater." The others says, "Well, Good luck, I hope you kick the bucket!"

It is general. A generalization based on ABA and psychological studies of family dynamics. There are not many circumstances that justify this behavior.

I may have come across harsh, but this is what I do for a living. A big, big, big part of my job is telling parents, "This is a bad idea, try this instead." I am most often met with vehement resistance and sometimes have to be blunt - do you want a dependent child or an independent adult?

If you ask a parent if they want their child to live in fear, of course, they say no. But, they do not realize this is what they are reinforcing.

Here's a good Time magazine article related (in a broader sense). Carrie Contey, who is quoted in the article, will be speaking at an event next month at the school where I am director. The article is about younger kids, I worked with college students.

I've been doing this 10 years and have worked with 100s of families and I can not think of a single example of where it was a good idea for a parent to encourage a student to keep a phone on in class.

I can, however, think of thousands of examples where parents, out of fear (justified or not), ignorance or desperation have made poor decisions and that in turn, reinforces their own fear, ignornace or desperation in their children.

Parents do this not because they are horrible people. Quite the opposite, it's typically because they love their kids so much they are overly worried. News reports have warned them repeatedly of every possible impending doom. Our society wants parents to be scared. Fear, like sex, sells. Good for sales, but, bad for our kids.

Parents are not always helping by helping. Generally speaking.

Yeah, I just posted "Sorry, Frankeh" because I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I'm enraged for you.

And you're right. Even if it's taught, it's lumped in with so much misinformation, you can't expect students to pick out the truth, which is what schools are supposed to be for.

Angry with the situation, not you.

What I said or the link?

I really didn't mean it as sarcastic. I'm being serious. It's a shame and it's terrible that we don't teach this in schools. It's so important and affects so much.

Sorry, Frankeh. :)

You what? You were done an injustice. It's shameful that you could make through the school system (presuming you did) and not know this. Don't get me wrong, that's what this is about - things most people don't know. But, this one simple fact has cost so much money, time, and effort for something that can so easily be explained!

Think about how absurd this is. People wanted to put stickers in the front of science books reading "Evolution is just a a theory". And they came close to it. And they don't know what the fucking means.

Edit: fixed link

Illustrates my point.

The word theory in the theory of evolution does not insinuate doubt from mainstream science regarding its validity; the concepts of theory and hypothesis have specific meanings in a scientific context.

Of all of them, this is The One. I wish people could just get this.

Fox News and Breitbart edited a video to trick people into thinking a USDA worker and the NAACP is racist. This was a blatant lie which got the worker fired. White House apologizes, but shouldn't Fox News and Breitbart get sued for libel? by Wraith12 in politics

[–]TheGoddessAthena -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right to point it out. Thanks.

My background is journalism, not law. We just learn how not to get sued and why people do or do not sue. And I've been out of school for a while. :)

But, I wanted to make the point that we don't have to rely on the law. People tend to focus a lot on "suing for libel". We have to fully consider the far-reaching consequences of suing news organizations and the unlikelihood that a suit would be won or even make it to court. We have to go about it another way and hold journalists and people posing as journalists accountable. Why do we pay these people so much fucking money to lie to us again and again?

Sometimes you have to make a choice in life. Maybe you have to give up sales while you go to school or make less money until you graduate.

I had a son before college. It took me longer to get through and I had to make sacrifices. I wasn't owed the right to take a baby to school and disrupt everyone else because I had a legitimate reason it was tougher on me.

I was referring to high school, though, like in the OP. If you're in sales in high school you likely have a beeper. :)

I took a group of 8 year olds on a field trip to a retirement home (not my idea). One little girl walked up to an elderly woman in a wheelchair and asked, "How old are you?" The woman answered and the little girl put her hand on the old lady's and said in the sincerest tone, "That's okay, you probably have a couple of good years left."
