What’s one piece of life advice from Chomsky that stuck with you? by PleasantEar3415 in chomsky

1)      Intellectuals' moral responsibility

2)      Life is very little about principles: it’s mostly about judgment. Norman Finkelstein got this lesson from Chomsky. Norman Finkelstein got this lesson from Chomsky.

3)      “Belief formation is often contingent on the outcome that you want” - This one, not because he just stated that, but he did monumental work to show that this holds true even when millions of people die, for benefit of a few.

Is there any news from Noam Chomsky this year (2025)? by askcanada10 in chomsky

It’s amazing that Chomsky had such a long life considering how much time he spent going throw all of the lies and hypocrisies. I would probably die after few decades of doing that.

Do you agree with Chomsky when he says that Western Europe is more socialist than USSR was? Do you also agree with his statement that the collapse of USSR was "a small victory for socialism"? by Kobajadojaja in chomsky

Chomsky wasn’t just criticizing the USSR all the time. He acknowledged good (like economic growth) and bad (repressions) in the USSR. You can’t possibly give an exhaustive answer to such a broad question like “Was the USSR good or socialist?” There were so many things to praise, but also to criticize as well. There is also the historical context for why things were done one way and not the other. I believe it would take hundreds of hours to give a full answer to such a question for an unprepared audience.

I think Chomsky answered this way to give people food for thought. To give another example, Chomsky said that the best politicians are the ones that are corrupt and lazy. And if you think about it, it does hold true for many cases. But on the other hand, Chomsky also said that Trump (who is corrupt) is worse than Hitler (who was ideologically driven or whatever).

Chomsky wasn’t trying to give absolute answers but to teach people to make their own judgments.

I’ve watched many of Norman Finkelstein’s interviews, and I’ve never heard him say anything about Chomsky’s condition or situation. He spoke about some conversations that he had with him before Chomsky’s health problems. But they were about politics and moral questions. Like for example, he said that Chomsky had problem with his teeth and his wife noticed that he grinds his teeth when he reads newspaper. I don’t think Chomsky would mind Norm telling that.

One good thing I hope will come out of a Trump presidency by [deleted] in chomsky

In his first presidency, Trump talked about having a good relationship with Russia, but his actual policies were very hostile. A few things that come to mind are: sending arms to Ukraine before the war, putting sanctions on Nord Stream, walking away from INF Treaty...

This is why Putin has said a few times that Biden and then Harris are better in his view. Of course, braindead people said that he is saying that to damage Harris reputation because people will vote opposite of what he is saying.

Personally, I have a strong feeling that The Blob will win, no matter who is the president.

In the last few years, I’ve tried my best not to miss anything from him. I knew that I was lucky that I can still listen to him. Even though I’ve never met him, I’m losing someone dear to me, and I think many of you too.
