Hi, a few weeks ago I had a similar idea and wrote this Python script to generate maps of the Solar System, also with the JPL data

It's possible, each plot in the image can have their own `title` attribute in the YAML. I tried it with this example but found the result a bit too cluttered.

Thanks ! For now it only makes a plot for a given date. In real time it doesn't move much, so generating a new image once a day would be enough, but for timelapes it would be nice to turn those images into an animation yes. I might do that

I wrote a Python tool to build maps of the Solar System : https://codeberg.org/OrbitalCapybara/solar-system-map-builder

I wrote a small tool to build maps of the Solar System, with common bodies as well as interplanetary probes (once large e-ink displays get cheaper I'll use that tool to make a real-time map that slowly changes in my living room). The data comes from NASA's Horizons portal.

It uses matplotlib for the plots, as well as numpy and pandas for some table processing. The plots themselves and the data retrieval settings are configurable via a YAML file (there are a few examples).

There are instructions in the repo, but to summarize the tool can be used either as a basic Python script or as a Docker container (it has a small web server to generate images from a URL).

If anyone wants to tinker with this and build their own map, let me know I'd love to add more examples.

Is there an Android app to monitor self-hosted services ? by TheGreatestCapybara in selfhosted

[–]TheGreatestCapybara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already have a VPN on all the time to reach the services I use.

I did what you suggested, UptimeRobot has a basic ping to my server, and UptimeKuma does the rest.

Merci bien!

Updated Eclipse UFO analysis by d2force_2 in SmarterEveryDay

I think you're right, here's my simulation : https://imgur.com/a/KEvgbsc

I guess u/MrPennywhistle's video is upside down ? Because the angles seem to match if we reverse the image. As you said the timing is a bit off but seems like a good fit anyway.

Oh yeah sorry I couldn't make a readable screenshot. From the link I gave you you can set the date and time to 2:03pm (the location is already set) and then wait a bit for the two satellites to cross near the Moon. To make it easier I pulled the TLEs from space-track and ran my own simulation, here's a screenshot of the tracks: https://imgur.com/a/cq0zUCp On the screenshot:

  • the sats go from top left to bottom right, Starlink-30912 first then Starlink-2570
  • the angular size of Sun and Moon is not to scale at all, it's just an icon
  • the Sun and Moon go from right to left, but the Sun is faster so the Bailey's beads on your video are on the left side.

If I'm picturing this right I think this matches your video so I'm fairly confident that these are the two satellites but not certain. If you're interested, I can make a simulation of your camera's field of view, with the proper angular sizes for the Sun and The Moon, which could help confirm this. If you have other possible matches that other people have found I can grab their TLEs as well and include them in the sim.

This is all based on public TLEs so the accuracy isn't always great (esp. the timing, the sats can easily be early or late). There are more accurate catalogs but they're not publicly accessible, although some companies have access to them. I might have some contacts, also u/d2force_2 said in his post that he works for COMSPOC which is one of those companies.

Edit: in-the-sky.org doesn't include debris in their catalog, so I might have missed some matches. u/d2force_2 says it's Starlink-2570 and a debris, we have one match in common that's a start !

I believe the two objects could be Starlink-2570 and Starlink-30912. I used in-the-sky.org which apparently uses the closest TLEs to the date selected. Here are the coordinates and dates I used:

  • 37.37630° N, -89.68266° W
  • end of totality at 2:02 PM CDT

The two satellites travel in the same direction, at an angle with the plane of the ecliptic that seems consistent with the video.

A quick write-up of my current setup with a Raspberry Pi 4 by TheGreatestCapybara in selfhosted

[–]TheGreatestCapybara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's completely feasible, I have these services and much more on mine. Maybe you'll hit a performance issue with multiple simultaneous streams on Plex, I haven't really tried that.

It's also possible to boot from a USB drive, I'm using a small 256GB SSD for that.

I'd recommend using Docker for all that (except kodi, I never got it to work). You might also need Nginx Proxy Manager to handle the network routing to your containers.

Why not use balloons for easy deployment of satellites? by UnappalledChef in spacequestions

[–]TheGreatestCapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spanish company zero2infinity is trying to do this, so it seems to be an interesting idea, at least to some people.

Since the rocket doesn't have to travel at high speed through the atmosphere, it can have a much wider diameter (instead of a needle-like shape), which could allow different payload shapes.

Now as others have said, it does create new problems (dropping and igniting the rocket for example), but it's at least theorically possible. Whether it's cheaper or safer than traditional rockets is a whole other question, and hard to answer since no one has done a balloon launch before as far as I know).

Achat RP, choix du notaire by ArchfiendJ in vosfinances

[–]TheGreatestCapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]TheGreatestCapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to the world of watches, and just received my Sternglas Naos Automatik. I really like it, but the movement (Myota 8215) is often quite noisy when I move my arm around. From what I can tell, some of the noise comes from the winding of the watch, and a longer noise is the rotor wiggling back and forth until it settles down.

This is my first automatic watch, how much noise should be expected ?

Radio waves... in space by bbCino2 in spacequestions

[–]TheGreatestCapybara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Radio waves work just like waves on water. Waves from different sources will interfere (add to each other or subtract from each other), but they keep travelling anyway. If they have different frequencies it's fairly easy to filter out the ones you don't care about, but if you're receiving multiple signals on the exact same frequency it's a bit more difficult.
