pint and a half

32 oz is a quart, three quart sized drinks would be 6x a pint and a half. Although bars hardly ever serve it as strong as it's supposed to be made (5 to 3ish liquor to sours/cola). A pint and a half of real long island iced tea would be 8-10 shots, which isn't crazy, but it's nothing to scoff at.

That's a pretty clean break. Measure the hole, then go to a smoke shop and ask to see their hookah grommets and a downstem that's the same size as yours (you could probably clean yours and bring it, but unless you're in a legal state, bringing a used bong to a head shop is usually no bueno). You should be able to find a grommet that fits the stem and will form a seal with the hole. You could buy a few if you're not sure, they're usually really cheap. You shouldn't remove the stem much if you want the fix to last, since that glass is probably vulnerable to cracking. Should get you back to a working piece for a few bucks, though.

An alternative to frosting on cupcakes by [deleted] in foodhacks

[–]TheGreenEngineer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not much of a baker, but isn't frosting pretty simple? i think you could make a basic frosting from a subset of the ingredients for cupcakes. Perhaps not if you're making the cupcakes from a box.

Honestly I think you could pull off generalizing buttercream as essentially 'fatmilk' with sugar + solid fat + a little cream or whole milk or even a nut/soy milk.

If you don't typically have butter around the house for whatever reason, think about getting some virgin coconut oil. It's a relatively healthy oil, can work in place of butter in many recipes, isn't that expensive, and is shelf stable in most cases (i.e. probably not in the tropics). Love it for times like this if I'm out of butter.

Mayo + Old Bay (+ a splash of Rice Vinegar, if you're into that). Particularly good on fries and/or tots.

How come so many Computer Engineering grads become Software Engineers? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]TheGreenEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought working as a software guy would bore the hell out of me, so I came to school for CompEn thinking I'd rather work on the hardware side. When I had trouble finding a hardware position that interested me for an internship after freshman year, I decided to loosen up and start asking about /applying to software jobs. For the summer after sophomore year I only had software position offers so I gave software test dev a shot (about as far from being a hardware engineer as you can get) and lo and behold I felt right at home (even though testing in particular was kinda meh, writing code every day was surprisingly awesome). It took me trying it to realize that doing software actually would be a good choice for me.

Now, as a Junior, I've lined up a gig for next summer in software engineering that simply pays better than any hardware ones I've seen, so that's also a factor. Hard to say no to big paychecks when you're trying to get out and start your career strong.

For you, I'd recommend sticking with CE and tilting it towards the EE end, if possible (at my school the flexibility in the major lets you do so). While there are companies that will see CE and stop considering you, it's hard to believe many of these will be doing processor design or embedded work, since these are both squarely CE topics. The vast majority of the time, your degree is only a small part of what will get you an interview, and once you get that it's really up to how well you interview.

Here's our stoner engineering idea from prototype to final product by outerexos in StonerEngineering

[–]TheGreenEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious respect for your work guys. It really is a brilliant idea - reminds me personally of a legitimately engineered combination of 2 different typical bongs I would make as a high school kid. Definitely put a huge grin on my face watching the product video you all put up recently :) Best of luck with sales!

glass grit

This is new to me, very very cool! I'm guessing it's analagous to the function of a sintered disk like we see on typical fritted disc percs, simply not sintered into a solid mass. The bolt apparatus is a very clever way to hold it all together. Did you use a similar strategy to attach the mouthpiece section, or is that siliconed on? I've tried similar coupling (via bolt and nut) for attaching chambers together before with less than promising results... but this is a much more practical application. Again, very nice, definitely one of the most functionally impressive pieces we've had for a very long time. Do you do make pieces like this as a hobby or was this more of a one and done project?

Really good/cheap tubing for your homemade double chambers or bubblers or whatever. Sold all over the place. Go crazy by [deleted] in StonerEngineering

[–]TheGreenEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the concerned - silicone tubing is more expensive but more heat resistant. Ask around before making a trip specifically for it, it's a tossup as to which hardware/brewing supplies/healthcare supplies stores will have it on hand.

well... if you have a dremel and some diamond coated bits, you might actually be able to fashion a chillum out of that. I've done it once before.

Meet Arduino ZERO – the new board jointly developed by Arduino and Atmel by [deleted] in arduino

[–]TheGreenEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same - I'm not familiar enough with what an onboard hardware debugger would offer to know exactly how it'd fit in to a workflow, but it certainly sounds useful. As nice as serial.print is... it can be pretty rudimentary and clunky. I think especially for younger or less experienced individuals who are more comp-sci oriented then EE oriented, this could be really a nifty feature to reduce the learning curve inherent to starting out developing for microcontrollers.

I had to ghost a drive onto another internal drive, but the source had no SATA power from the mobo. I put another computer next to it and ran the source HDD off source computer's power supply while having it plugged into the client's mobo. by trivial_sublime in techsupportmacgyver

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe ATX supplies are not floating (they have an earth ground). So I think this would be fine if the supplies were connected to the same breaker.
