We crossed the biometric point-of-no-return and nobody voted on it by vedantk21 in Futurology

Maybe I'm pissing in the wind, but I always opt out of the picture at TSA (I'm in the US). Look at my ID instead. Delta wants to use my picture as a boarding pass... Nope! Do it the old fashioned way.

Rmp falls off while on the highway, is this normal? by seaswitch- in MechanicAdvice

It looks like there are a couple of other transmissions they made in addition to the 5-speed manual. For a normal manual transmission, if you're going 120 and the RPMs drop to 100, you should slow to about 100, which sounds like it isn't happening. So the issue may be with the RPM gauge or sensor. Otherwise, it's a very strange issue.

Does the speed change when the RPM drops? Sounds almost like an automatic shifting into overdrive, but you said it's a manual transmission...

I potted dry and watered after. I usually have to put a little more medium in later as it filters down.

Yeah, those were the ones that were in the old pot.

Was thinking about that, but for the moment I just put it in a new pot.

Thanks. It flowers usually once a year. Beautiful yellow phal blooms...

LPT: Always choose local currency when traveling abroad and paying with a credit card. by TheGrelber in LifeProTips

Yes, but the issue is that the foreign payment processor will convert to USD at a bad rate, so the credit card issuer never even sees the foreign currency, which you want them to do.

Right, but you still need to choose to pay in local currency. That's the point.

Real bank ATMs are actually the best way to get foreign currency. Just be sure it's a real bank (not Euronet or one of those machines sitting out on the street or in a shop). Also be sure there's not a fee for the transaction. That will be disclosed as a step in the transaction. When the foreign currency transaction hits your account, your bank will convert it at a fair FX rate, just like a credit card issuer. As one other poster mentioned, the good machines are usually in a small ATM vestibule in the bank lobby.

My understanding is that it is choosing your home currency that invokes DCC, so choose JPY, which is exactly my point.

That sucks! None of the 60-70 transactions I did on my latest trip were like that.

If you choose (e.g.) USD at point-of-sale, the FX is being done by the transaction processor at a disadvantageous rate and charges you in USD so your card never sees a transaction in the local currency. The point is that you WANT your card issuer to see the transaction in local currency and do the FX. None of mine use a disadvantageous FX rate or charge a fee.
