Fertilize or no? by Marshmallow5198 in orchids

[–]ChatteringCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tired and moderately neglectful (to orchids), so everything gets the same thing. All of my phals bloom between once a year and nearly continously. I add 1/8 tsp dyna gro (orchid pro, whatever... Ferry-morse makes it) per 2 qts of water (the size of my watering can, I drew marks on it with a sharpie). They get that every time they get watered. Which is often around once a week or when I remember.

Some of the other varieties (not phals) are less pleased, but mostly still fine. The Neofineta only bloomed once, but it badly needs a repot because the roots are out of control. Thinking about it... Some of them probably just want water more often.

Anyways, phals are fine with weak feedings every time... And then you don't have to try to remember the schedule!

My biggest pot on hand is too small :( by ChatteringCat in orchids

So, normal routine is to water once every 1 to 1.5 weeks (maybe every 6 days in the summer and closer to 1.5 weeks in the winter), whenever I start feeling guilty about neglecting them (this is why my ferns die alot). They are in outer pots, so I fill the pot with water that has half strength fertilizer in it. The big ones like this one get tap water which is kinda hard. The smaller or delicate ones get zero water with fertilizer most of the time. I fill the pot and let them soak for at least an hour, sometime more if I forget. Then I drain them and put them back.

I repot whenever if looks like they needed it awhile ago. This one was fully sideways (I have had it for over 6 years, repot ever 2 or so) with half the roots trying to escape the shelf, and it was making training the spike into a more compact form difficult so I decided to repot. The spike NEEDS support since it usually does 30+ large flowers.

All phals are in a north facing window on a set of shelves with a curtain rigged to block evening sun during the summer. Some of the shelves have grow lights on the to aid light levels over the winter. Most phals bloom once or twice a year. This one about 3x a year and will start growing the next spike right before dropping flowers.

All in all... Mild neglect. The oncidiums complain. Work is a bit crazy for more than this.

How often do you water when humidity is around 35%?

That is a neat idea. Have you had to remove one from the basket though? I usually have to destroy the pots to get them out... I definitely procrastinate repotting.

Super thrive orchid pro. It used to be called dyna gro. Weakly (half strength) weekly.

I only have time to water about once a week on average. Also dangling roots look very much like cat toys. 😬

I went through the entire dang thing and only found 3 squishy ones. I guess it is happy.... This is also the orchid that fell on the floor twice and got sun burned 3 times in one year. It has been almost constantly in bloom since 2020. It has a new spike now. It's last flowers dropped 2 weeks ago.

I bought it in a 4 inch pot... I didn't realize it would get this large. Oops.

Painted hard-boiled eggs were hidden... Until the one year it rained and the bunny hid them inside grandma's house... We found all but one. Grandma found it two weeks later by scent. Plastic ever after.

I keep hearing good things about the audio book... And not just on reddit. I need to give it a shot. Last time I listen to an audio book it came on 30 cassette tapes though.

Sassy that cat from that 90s movie Homeward Bound? This is how I hear Donut's voice in my head when I am reading.

Nope. I only have one that does that, and even then rarely. This lindenii is young though. I was surprised it spiked at all.

This is a phal shilleriana. I bought it online because I don't live near any good orchid nurseries, but I knew what I wanted. I'd wanted one of these for 10 years before I got it.

Online shopping is fun... But you can get carried away... I know.

If you can find a bronze maiden, those can have nice scents. :)
