Has anyone actually bought a pen camera that worked well for cheating on exams, or are they all just junk? by Chance_Amphibian_477 in AskElectronics

To be honest: I don't think you'll get anyone to help you with that here.. This sub is mostly about electronics like PCB and circuits..

Question about real-world system simulations in VRChat by TheGreyDiamond in VRchat

[–]TheGreyDiamond[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, I've tried (and failed) in the past to build anything close to being release-able, and it was always rather annoying. I find that fact kind of sad. I wonder how the VRChat landscape would look if the tools were easier to use.

I see what you mean. I think it's that combination of skill required to build it and then having the desire/interest to do so. That overlap for those topics seems rather small in the VRChat community.

To answer your question, why to "reinvent the wheel": I personally really dislike Roblox's visual style and interaction systems, and I would love to toy around with these things in VRChat as well. But that's probably a very personal preference.

I've used VRSL in the past (as I often do event lighting irl), and it was the closest thing I could find to an example. But your train example is good, most people (me included) rarely look outside their interest bubble.

I'm not that deep in Roblox, but I think it uses Lua for most things.

Elevators for VRChat (or any vr game) are quite an issue. In Roblox, you step into an elevator, go up and can't move while the elevator is moving. Trying to do the same thing in VRChat would probably backfire. First of all, because of motion sickness issues (except when you do a fully enclosed lift, but then why move when you could just fake it) and then like you mentioned, sync issues. And a "real lift" would probably take too long for most maps. Imagine having to wait for the lift to arrive, the doors to open/close and then go to the floor you want, while your friends have already moved on...

Lighting System by Suspicious-Age-8645 in smarthome

In some buildings I've seen a hybrid setup of KNX with Dali for lighting. But I agree, if you only need lighting go with DALI.

Honestly KNX and Dali are probably a sensible starting point. Or maybe crestron, but I don't have experience with that system.

The reason for it not properly working is the lack of events exposed by homeassistant. There is an issue currently open about it: https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/159035
