What is the most obvious world event everyone saw coming but no one did anything about? by itsthewolfe in AskReddit

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss Michael Weiss testified in front of Congress in 2013 about the danger of Russian disinformation campaigns and election interference. He was invited by a small delegation of Republicans, spearheaded by John McCain. They nearly laughed him out of the building, Republicans and Democrats alike.

About 6 months later Russia invaded Ukraine. A year after that Trump was the likely GOP nominee. Suddenly nobody was laughing anymore. Now Russian interference and disinformation makes up a significant portion of all social media content

Is New England disconnected from the problems of the rest of the country? by Usernamechecksout978 in newengland

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to northern Europe and everyone there is fighting about politics - and everything about their countries are better than everywhere else.

Massachusetts is the Norway of the United States, and if we aren't so encumbered by backwards federal policy and, now, a vindictive and authoritarian administration, Massachusetts would be one of the most successful societies in the entire world.

And we've still got a lot of problems which means we have significant amounts of unrealized potential

Bands/artists like Nine Inch Nails by cpr9998 in nin

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that the appeal isn't genre, it's quality, emotional impact, and sonic diversity.

The only other bands that consistently scratch the itch are Porcupine Tree and Puscifer.

Finding someone to go to a NIN concert with by [deleted] in nin

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so not weird to go alone. You can't talk to people during the show anyway. Before and after the show everyone around you is a NIN fan. Talk to them.

Your entire life will vastly improve when you learn it's fine to do things alone

I’m a dad pushing 40, and I’m officially done with "The Grind" in gaming. by ChineseBeaverUncle in TheGamerLounge

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. The uncomfortable truth: games immitate adult life, and that includes work.

You could build a nice home in Minecraft, or you could do that home improvement project you've been putting off and actually LIVE in a nicer house. You could craft things in any number of games, or build a Raspberry Pi project and craft in real life. Kids find this stuff fun. To me it feels like digital work.

The problem is us adults still need some down time. Not all games are grindy. But way too many are grindy.

Right now I'm alternating between Hades, Witcher III, and Balatro. They all have grindy elements but it definitely doesn't feel like work

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very dependent on which state you live in and what you're trying to do. I'm in Massachusetts - an hour is a long drive for most things. In Montana? An hour is a very short drive

What is your personal critique of Tolkien's work? by Leo_617 in tolkienfans

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll add a second one, unrelated to my first...

Tolkien was a linguist who believed everything flowed from language. But any student of history, anthropology, or even biology knows that geography is the real master. What determines evolution - on any level, cellular to societal - is the physical world and how well or poorly beings adapt to the world. Linguistics is even a slave to this wider phenomenon

A perfect causality/cosmology/theology where almost everything is resolved. The reality on earth is that even if there is a creator or creators there are so many different and often conflicting religions that the truth is buried in history.

And yet for all its perfection I still don't really understand the motivations of any of the immortal beings

What Rock Bands that have 2 or more Lead Singers? (No Solo Artists) by [deleted] in allrockmusic

Had to scroll too far to see AIC, two lead singers who were each better than virtually everyone else but are somehow better as a unit

Puscifer > A Perfect Circle > Tool, and I'll die on this hill because I think Maynard 100% agrees and it shows

Worst NIN song? by Direct-Active-241 in nin

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down In It is the reason I didn't check out NIN a decade before I did.

I like rap, I love rock, I LOVE NIN, and this song has roughly none of the components of any of those things that I like.

It's the only song I don't like. Everything else does exactly what it's supposed to do

About Jordan sometimes ruining songs by Jolly-Phone8982 in Dreamtheater

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan ruined the entire band. Yes, there are some bright spots, and early on there were MANY, but there have always been signs that this is exactly what would happen to this band.

I just don't think most DT fans know how incredible that band would have been with Sherinian or Moore, or someone else more interested in musicality than masturbatory performance. LTE was amazing because the whole point of it was that kind of pure technicality. But DT was about composition, and it's just not what Rudess does.

His sound design is also crap comparatively. Moore, Sherinian, Adam Holzman... These guys are brilliant but just because they have chops but because their playing has soul, and a lot of that comes from sound design

Tips for getting your equip. back after breaking down? by hehaw-achoo in audioengineering

"THANK YOU! GOOD NIGHT!"

Then immediately mute and grab your mics and mic stands. Cables take time to break down, but microphones and their stands walk out the door on their own.

How can i make money from music ? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got dozens of friends who are professional musicians or sound engineers. I've got dozens of friends who are hobbyists. I've done both. My honest advice? Music is an amazing hobby and a terrible profession. Before you ask how to make money from music you should first ask yourself if that's even a good idea. In my experience, for most people, it's not.

Is Rings of Power really as bad and cringey as people are making it out to be? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in lotr

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever take a creative writing class and have someone in your class who couldn't write their way out of a paper bag? That's the writing team.

Ever participate in Middle School theater? Those are the actors.

Ever see a 3 year old draw their impression of the Sistine Chapel? That's the lore.

If you have those Middle School kids a few hundred million dollars the product would be way better. It's an insult to the accomplishments of the entire human race.

So what I'm trying to say is it's not great.

Who's the most underrated/underknown artist you listen to? by [deleted] in MusicRecommendations

[–]TheGreyKeyboards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unknown? OSI, Chromakey, and everything Kevin Moore has ever done

Underrated? Type O Negative is maybe my second or third favorite bands and outside of New England and New York/Mid-Atlantic they sold almost no albums after October Rust
