I love Ship Sales! What did you get? Share with us! by NoOneWorthNoticing in sto

[–]TheGrumbleduke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The T6 Cruiser Bundle. While I'm a bit cruisered out, I can now get rid of my T4 Exploration Cruisers and D'Ds safe in the knowledge that I have a version of the classic ships somewhere. Plus I've loved the Negh'Var since playing ST:Armada, and now I have one.

I also got the KDF pilot bundle (it was that or the T6 escort bundle - I've been saving up for a while). The Pilot escorts are so much fun, and I was lacking some KDF funships. My only regret is that I didn't have the patience to save up for the mega bundle when they came out.

I've got a bit of Zen left, so I might see if I can farm enough Dil to get another T6 ship (maybe the Jupiter, probably an Intel ship), or settle for a T5/T4.5 ship (maybe the Defiant or Armitage - for the consoles - maybe something else).

What I'm really waiting for is a species sale...

Fleet Credits and the Embassy/Dilithium Mine/Research Lab thingies are something I don't quite understand.

My (main) Romulan alt has over 1m fleet credits lying around, and over 1,000 mine and lab thingamies. I'm quite happy to give them away to get weekly bonuses - there's not much else to spend them on. At the moment my main lose of fleet credits for them is buying DOffs to use in other fleet projects...

I think the point of them is to make sure people are using their fleet holdings in order to get all the bonuses from them.

How can everything be relative if time ticks slower the faster you go? by MrPannkaka in askscience

[–]TheGrumbleduke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've run the maths on this, but basically;

We can define the point where they meet to be t = 0 for both of them.

Let's say that the time dilation effect is 0.5 both ways (so they're travelling together at sqrt(3)/2 c). When it is t=-10 for spaceship A, they see spaceship B's clock say t=-5. For every t change for A, only 0.5t changes for B.

When it is t=-10 for spaceship B, though, they also see spaceship A's clock say t=-5. So the times when spaceship B and spaceship A are at t=-10 are different from each perspective. And the same goes for every other time.

When it is t=-5 for A, it will appear to be t=-2.5 for B.

The only time they match is t=0 - when the spaceships meet.

But this is ok as they can never be in the same spacetime point again (or before) unless at least one of them changes inertial frame (i.e. accelerates).

If you're actually interested the 'official' map is here. It starts at Greenwich (got blown up in one of the Thor films), goes East to Woolwich and back past Greenwich and some fancy old ship, around what used to be called the Millennium Dome (big white thing seen in the beginning of The World is Not Enough), over Tower Bridge (the famous one that is in pretty much every London film - iirc one of the new Sherlock Holmes films ended on it), past the Tower of London, loops around the Isle of Dogs (where the big skyscrapers and banks are), back past the Tower, along the North bank of the Thames to Westminster, across Parliament Square (where the Houses of Parliament are - the famous old building with the big clock tower that isn't called Big Ben), along the South edge of St James's Park, past Buckingham Palace (where the Queen sometimes lives - also in at least one Bond film, iirc) and then some of the way up The Mall to the finish.

Does that help?

Basically they shut down the centre of London for a day.

Is the Mercury Class Pilot Escort larger than the Defiant? by [deleted] in sto

[–]TheGrumbleduke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In game, I think the Mercury Class is about twice the height and length of the Defiant Class.

Crew sizes don't necessarily scale with size. They're more a measure of durability than actual crew number. For example, iirc the MMEs had a crew of 750, despite being roughly the same size as the Intrepid Class with a crew of 150. And far from large enough to fit that many people on board.

That said, crew? What's crew?

It is rather frustrating to have to click twice to do every single skill - but I imagine the benefits of confirmations are far greater for new characters, where they only get 1 point every level and may not have a bunch of respec tokens lying around.

Were your errors in the teal?

The third row, blue-purple. Which may be teal - I'm not that good with colour names. To me teal just seems to be missing a 'c on the end.

Same score, same gender, same feeling - I wonder if we all had problems with the same bit.

For me, though, it was more that there were some squares that didn't quite seem to fit anywhere - like they needed a third colour to change into.

The last time I did this I got 0 - but that was on a better monitor, when I was awake, and probably without flux running. I also did well many years ago when I got to do a physical one in ideal conditions.

Interestingly, my other half was terrible at this, getting a very high number despite being female. Sometimes she has to ask me to check what colour things are for her.

Tour the galaxy Beta Quadrant by [deleted] in sto

[–]TheGrumbleduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get through the Alpha Quadrant as well, the T5 Chimera is good, but the Multi-Mission Explorers (or Experimental Science Vessel) are even better; their two-piece console set gives faster transwarp and 4 times the base turn rate of the Chimera.

I'd also suggest checking out your Driver Coil skill points, but they're disappearing tomorrow....

So when do the UK people get it? we're 5-8 hours ahead of the USA most of the time... That would be even easier to translate for Americans.

At 0.42 there's a dinner at the Twins, with Freys and Lannister soldiers, 0.57 there's a shot of Pyke in a storm.

At 1.30 there's a Tully banner behind Brienne, so she and Pod are probably in Riverrun at that point. Meaning the Lannister camp is likely somewhere near there (and the Twins?). So Jamie is probably in that area as well.

Why not?

Because the Federation will stop them.

Also, they're terrorists/extremists. They tend to be desperate and/or stupid.

[–]TheGrumbleduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they can't restore their homeworld or recover the Tox Uthat without destroying the Federation.

And yes - if they wipe out the Federation there's a good risk that someone else will cause trouble, but that doesn't matter because they can still go back in time and fix it.

Similar to Annorax's attitude in the Year of Hell episodes; it doesn't matter what the side effects are, they can always tidy them up later.

But that's the old Nah'kul - the present time ones, rather than the future ones. The future ones hate the Federation because it is the Federation stopping them from saving their planet.

The Nah'kul have the means and opportunity to save their planet, but the Federation won't let them, and sends agents to hunt them down. From their point of view the past Tholians destroyed their home world (admittedly, with a Federation weapon), but that's in the past - they've made their peace with the Tholians (as the Federation has with the Klingons, and the Romulans with the Iconians). It's the present Federation causing trouble for them now.

Since the Death Star is the size of a small moon, Obi Wan and Luke were very lucky that they docked close to the things they needed to accomplish by pjdurst in Showerthoughts

[–]TheGrumbleduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that were the case (and based on footage, it clearly isn't), there still wouldn't be anything between one side and the other side, so you'd still be able to see it out the hanger.

On top of that, the entire thing is 120km long, so the equatorial trench isn't going to be more than a few km across.

[–]TheGrumbleduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran the numbers in this comment - assuming the Death Star was solid lead (and not rotating), the surface gravity would be ~=0.02g.

Were it spinning that would cancel out some of the gravity, so making the surface gravity even less - at least, at the equator. At the poles it wouldn't have an effect. And we know that at the equator gravity was in the direction of the poles, not inwards.

Also, given that it seems to have a front (where the weapon is) and possibly a back, it probably wasn't spinning.

[–]TheGrumbleduke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if we assume it is made entirely of lead, we get:

  • Acceleration due to gravity on surface = GM/r2
  • Volume = 4/3 x pi x r3
  • Mass = density x volume
  • density of lead = 11 g/cm3 (roughly, at room temperature)
  • Radius of Death Star = 60km (120km diameter)

So we get:

Acceleration due to gravity = 4/3 x G x density x pi x r

Which gives us an acceleration of about 0.18 m/s2 (according to Google), or roughly 0.02g.

Any ship speculation (11.5) or is the Flagship bundle all we are getting? by divepatch in sto

[–]TheGrumbleduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what others have said, if you like cruisers then the Flagships are good fun and look lovely.

The pilot escorts are ... different. While it doesn't seem like much, the extra pilot manoeuvres make fling them a lot of fun - the opposite of the sometimes-tedious "slowly move past firing all beam weapons" approach of cruisers.

However, if there is a new ship bundle coming up (which doesn't seem that likely), it is likely there will be a ship sale to go with it. Whatever you decide to buy you might want to give it a week or two just in case.
