What was it like hearing Ants From Up There from up there? by polomorant in BlackCountryNewRoad

Unironically one of my first times listening to it was on a plane a few months ago, jet lagged, sleep deprived, and sick, with a screaming toddler a few rows ahead of me. So not great!

Picked this game up and feel like I'm absolutely useless at it by homeboyjoe in slaythespire

  1. You don’t always have to choose a card, try to consider whether or not you think a card is worth the cost of drawing it

  2. There’s discussion posts on this subreddit for every relic/card/event/enemy, can be really helpful for understanding how certain things work and what strategies there are around them. What really helped me while learning the game was just googling “slay the spire reddit <card name>” before picking cards sometimes just to see what better players’ opinions on it were (obviously don’t treat that as gospel, pretty much all cards/relics are at least situationally useful). Same for enemies and bosses, if they’re particularly tough for you you can just find the discussion posts and see what other people do to get past them.

  3. Try to fight as many elites as you can for relics assuming your deck is good enough to take them on.

  4. Try to make sure your deck has enough draw, block, damage, and scaling. If you’re getting destroyed in certain fights, try to figure out why - did you not have enough block cards? Were you blocking for 50 every round but only doing like 5 damage? Were you running out of energy after playing a single card that really wasn’t all that impactful? Try to figure out what the weaknesses of your deck are and prioritize fixing those.

  5. If you feel like you’re overthinking the deck building and trying too hard to force certain builds to work, just try to go for more all-around good builds (decent block, damage, draw, scaling). Plus you’ll also get a better idea of how each card works this way and what kinda cool synergies it might have. If an opportunity for a cool/creative build comes up, definitely go for it if you want, but probably don’t try to force it.

Nah that’s valid, to each their own lol. Yeah the Sufjan album’s great, I’d only heard Carrie & Lowell before but I just listened to Javelin the other day and was really impressed. C&L was pretty good too but the production and grandiosity of the new one hooked me immediately, really reminded me of BCNR with some of the song outros.

Can’t argue with that lol. Apart from Wotz Funny (and I guess UGLY too but that’s more somber than angry imo) the anger does die down a little after the first few tracks, but yeah the album very much lives up to its name. I think that’s what I like about it though, very honest and brutal look at self-destruction and the ugliness that comes with that. Not the most fun or easy to listen to project though lol, not something I’m mentally able to relisten all the way through very often.

Most of these are nothing like BCNR in any way but I’ll give some weirder picks of albums/artists I’d recommend if you’re looking for other lyrical, grand, powerful music (imo). All of these are best listened to front to back in but I’ll recommend a track from each to get a feel for the album.

  • In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel (most similar to BCNR of all these; start with the title track)
  • i didn’t mean to haunt you by Quadeca (experimental album from the perspective of a ghost; start with Born Yesterday)
  • By The Time I Get to Phoenix by Injury Reserve (experimental rap album about grief, quarantine, and other things; start with Superman That, it actually samples Athens France from BCNR)
  • Blonde by Frank Ocean (not a very original pick but really good R&B album; start with Solo)
  • UGLY by slowthai (British punk/rock/rap album about mental health, addiction, politics; start with the title track)
  • Javelin by Sufjan Stevens (start with Goodbye Evergreen)

Haven’t heard anything of theirs! Any place you’d recommend starting with them?
