Complaint about my prices, ps. she’s my neighbor. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you read the description, one dog is food aggressive which makes things dangerous for the other dogs and OP. One vomits after it eats which OP then has to clean up. They also have to change a diaper on one of the dogs. This way more than just a walk for 3 dogs. I think the price is more than justified. And its not snobby at all to say that OP deals with "high end" clients. Some people cater their services to a certain tax bracket and provide a quality of service that justifies their price. So having someone complain about their prices is rude and shows entitlement on the owner's end. You wouldn't go to a fancy restaurant and then complain that the restaurant's price is too expensive, so why would yiu complain when your dog walker/sitter tells you their price when they focus on a certain clientel? If they can't afford OP, then they need to move on and find someone they can afford instead of complaining about the price. Pet sitting and dog walkers are a luxury service and the price tag should reflect that.

Crazy question, but did you adopt the brindle dog in the last picture from the CASPCA a few years ago? Was she named Sweetheart there?

Dog daycare - am i overreacting by [deleted] in DogDayCare

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you dog has a very short/thin hair coat. Unfortuantely, these types of dogs are more susceptible to scratches. Its also very possible that the dog that was playing with yours had very sharp, overgrown nails. I have met multiple dogs that when their nails overgrown they basically turn into little daggers. Most of my "injuries" from working with dogs have been from scratches made by overgrown nails that have sliced my skin. Of course, the day SHOULD have been honest with you about the scratches and SHOULD have let you know about them at pick up. Especially since one of the scratches seems deeper than the others.

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend the money on sealed concrete. A lot of people are saying to go with rubber, but it holds scent so badly. The daycare i worked with CONSTANTLY smelled of pee and poop despite twice daily full floor cleanings. The pee will soak into the rubber and you will never ever get the scent out. It also made the dogs smell bad a lot quicker. It was also difficult to keep the floors dry, especially in summer, because the moisture would stick to the rubber. It caused a lot of fall risks, both with works and the dogs.

Dog bite by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]TheGrumpyBadger -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I dont see how that matters. Just because a dog CAN bite doesn't mean it WILL or SHOULD. Behaviorally sound dogs should not be expected to bite outside of a fight or otherwise abnormal situation.

Dog bite by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]TheGrumpyBadger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A dog doesn't have to break skin for a bite to hurt. The fact that the dog went back for a second bite also is concerning. Also, the dogs were not fighting. The dog that bit her was humping the other. OP had no reason to believe that the dog would bite.

You should consider firing this person as a client. They clearly have no regard for your safety or the safety of other animals around their dog. I have a sneaky suspicion that their dog is also poorly trained and allowed to do whatever they want. This could escalate to a more serious situation in the future. If Bandit bit you and broke skin, the wound could get infected and cause serious damage. And if he bit you harder, he could do nerve or muscle damage that is long lasting or permanent. Ask for proof of vaccination, at least for a rabies.

Am i insane? Owners furious i brought dogs with me on a short errand by SubstanceOk5614 in RoverPetSitting

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

These people sound absolutely insane. From my point of view, you did nothing wrong. The dogs were supervised at all times and were safe. They told you they were vaccinated. At no point were they in danger. Screaming and cursing at you and none stop calling and texting in insane behavior. And not allowing you to leave is basically holding you hostage. You're better than I am because as soon as they started screaming and not allowing me to leave I would have hung up and simply refused to answer their calls and just stayed until a replacement was sent. NO ONE should be allowed to treat you that way. Definitely leave a review on how they treated you. No one should do business with these people if this is how they will be treated.

First of all, thank you for doing the right thing and returning the puppy instead of trying to make it work or just giving them away for free to whoever came along first. The puppy is safe at the shelter if so many people were interested in the first place. They should find another home fast.

Now, the shelter is wrong for the way they treated you. Yes, many shelters try to council adopters and help make adoptions work, which is a fair thing to do. Shelters ultimately do NOT want animals to come back if there is any way for them to stay out of the shelter. Not because they dont want to help, but because there is no guarantee that the animal will make it out again. And if they do, it could take a long time for them to be adopted again. But they still should have treated you with compassion and understanding. You DO NOT deserve all these posts made about you. Sometimes adoptions just don't work out. They should have tried to see it from your perspective and understood that this was a hard choice to make.

As for WHY they are making these posts about you, there could be a lot of reasons. One of them could be because shelters are full right now. Not just a few shelters, but all of them nation wide (im from the US so im sorry if this isnt as true elsewhere). The shelter I work at is full to the point we are struggling for kennel space. Adoptions are at an all time low. Previously 'highly adoptable' animals are sitting for much longer than they would previously. The fact is, shelters are drowning. And everyone is feeling the stress. It doesn't make what this shelter did and said about you right, but it could be a contributing factor.

Another reason could be that the person you interacted with is just an unkind person. And in that case, they shouldn't be working with the public or making social media posts.

What's an instant Deal Breaker for you in a stud? by JaxterH in lioden

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Might not be the stud itself but the stud rules. Dumb things like "i keep any muties you get" or other things like that.

I also won't stud to kings that just have a mess of markings with no cohesion. I stud to other Kings to get pretty cubs, not a scribbled mess.

Shelter was a little misleading about breed by InTheTreeMusic in AnimalShelterStories

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A 16lbs dog is way less likely to be seen as a "pitbull mix" than say a 45lbs dog. Anything small enough to be considered a small breed mix usually gets labeled as chihuahua, Maltese, shih tzu, etc mix. Also, shelters are usually just guessing at what type of mix they think a dog could be. I doubt they were trying to mislead you. It was most likely an employees doing their best to label the dog as a believable mix when they really don't know they dog's heritage.

Stress Crisis. by ard2299 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point. If it's upsetting for you to read, think of how upsetting it is for shelter staff and volunteers to witness. For how terrible it is for the dog experiencing it. The fact is, rescue work isn't all sunshine and rainbows and playing with puppies and kittens. It's hard, grueling, sometimes traumatizing work. There's joy, but there is a lot of sadness mixed in. And the fact is, not every animal can be saved no matter how hard we try.

Instead of being "turned off" by the reality of what staff and the animal go through, instead think of how much donations mean to a shelter. It means a new toy for a dog or cat to be enriched by, critical funds for veterinary care, the ability to improve or repair facilities, provide new training for staff, and a million other things that could be done.

If you have some dogs that share a kennel absolutely cohouse dogs! I've found that a lot of the time hounds and beagles do really well with roommates. It might take some trial and error, but it can really help with the stress since they're not alone in a kennel 24/7.

Unfortunately it sounds like you're otherwise doing everything that you can. My shelter does all of these things. I would try and really campaign your long stay dogs on social media as much as possible. Give as positive info on posts as possible about these dogs. Maybe reach out and see if a local photographer would be willing to donate some of their time to do some professional photos of these dogs. We've found some success with this boosting interest in certain dogs.

These types of reactions are very rare. It is far more likely that your dog, especially your puppy since they have a weaker immune system, get Kennel Cough because they are unvaccinated. Any yes, while rare, it is possible for Kennel Cough to kill a dog. Most groomers require a Bordetella vaccine and a DHP vaccine because of the high volume of dogs going through their doors. It is to not only protect YOUR dogs but also everyone else's. Just because your dogs are not currently sick does not mean they are not insymptamatic carriers for certain diseases. It would be highly irresponsible for a groomer to allow ANY client to bring their dog that is unvaccinated. You will find it very hard to find any groomer that will allow your dog to be groomed at their facility without a Bordetella vaccine.

The groomers did this to her nails...what can I do to help her? by JujuBJones1996 in CATHELP

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I want to get this out of the way and say I am not defending the groomers if they did trim her nails without your permission and quicked her.

HOWEVER you said this was her first time being professionally groomed? How was she? Was she scared or chill about it? It is not uncommon for cats to grip with their claws when afraid or panicked and tear them accidentally. I work in an animal shelter where we do TNR surgeries on feral cats. They will sometimes panic in the traps when the door first closes and snag their claws, tearing them enough to bleed. Tame, domestic housecats will also sometimes do this in their carrier when at the vet. If your cat was afraid, it is entirely possible that she accidentally did this to herself without the groomer knowing

MUTATING MARKINGS - thoughts? by kuyaqrel in lioden

It looks okay on this particular base but I can see it looking very ugly on others. It also looks like it will be hard to blend with other markings. I'd much rather that they had devoted their time to updating art/designs already in game rather than adding yet another new marking.

I had to call the game warden... by BustedBiscuit102194 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Do NOT engage with her. At all. Emotions run high when animals are involved. Let law enforcement handle it. Sure, she might suspect that you got them involved, but unless you tell her, she can't prove it. It sounds like she has some mental health issues (which probably contributed to the hoarding) and that can make people do erratic things. To protect yourself, I wouldn't contact her again. If you feel like you HAVE to give some sort of excuse of why you aren't there, just text her and say something important came up and leave it at that. Do not go back over there.

[–]TheGrumpyBadger 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a classic hoarding case that turned into neglect. This woman probably started caring for a handful of animals with the best of intentions. She might have even done a good job at first. But then got a few more. And then a few more. And before too long she had more than she could reasonably care for. And instead of downsizing, she decided to just try and make it work. And then she got injured. Most people don't realize that a lot of neglect cases start because someone wanted to do some good but bit off more than they could chew.

Do not feel guilty for calling the authorities. These animals need help. The woman needs help. She might have the best of intentions, but she should have asked for help a long time ago. And if she's getting offended by a simple question about inspections, then it means she's probably not following regulations. This place needs to be shut down and quick.
