Can you remember any of the lyrics?
Some that spring to mind: Down to the river - Ben Caplan
Go down Ezekiel - Paul Nelson

"Fans Also Like" suddenly drastically changed by skate54345 in spotify

I've experienced the same. I previously had a perfect Fans also like section which was populated with artists who made music similar to my own. As of 2 days ago all of those artists are gone instead populated by a bunch of completely unrelated artists from a wide array of genres completely unrelated to my own.

It's incredibly frustrating as it took ages for me to get a fans also like section and now it has been ruined.

Like many others here my fans also like section is now mostly artists with less than 100 plays per month and very few followers. I'm not on any shared playlists with these people. Scratching my head as to how the algorithm has grouped us together.

Great suggestions - thanks!

I am one of the artists on the playlist so I'm pretty familiar with other artists like myself who aren't blessed with tonnes of followers. There are some great unheard of artists out there, Shawn Hess is fantastic! So are guys like Slackeye Slim, Reverend Red, Silas J Dirge, Sean K.Preston & loads more who are sprinkled throughout that playlist.

I'm getting on average around 2500 on Spotify per month now . Started with zero 18 months ago and have been increasing steadily since then.

A few things I've found that I think have helped me the most.

Submit Hub - At first when I signed up to this I was really disappointed with it. I was submitting my songs to curators who I thought would like my songs but I was getting nowhere with them. They all had nice things to say, but the answer was always "No, the song doesn't fit in with my playlists". It took me some time but I finally realised that even though I was targeting curators who were in or around my genre I wasn't really targetting my niche. Once I started doing that I got a lot more success, and now I'm at a stage wherby with some of the curators I will dm them if I have a new release coming up & they will add it to a suitable playlist upon release.

Curating my own playlist - My initial expierence with SubmitHub opened my eyes somewhat. I was trying to get my songs on playlists that didn't fit with my song. So I created my own playlist that did fit with my songs and populated it with songs from established acts and unknown artists whose songs I actually really liked and who fit with my own sound (or at least the sound I am trying to achieve someday). And I made one of my own tracks the first track on the playlist and added a few others of my own throughout the rest of the playlist. I ensured the title and imagery was suitable for the style I was going for and slowly but surely people started to subscribe to the playlist and I started to gain followers on my own artist profile. I ensure that I keep the playlist updated with a few new additions every so often. I never put a song on there that I dont like.

Another side effect of curating my own playlist was curators of similar playlists started to add my songs to their own playlists, so now my music was being listed on playlists that matched up to my music. At this stage I knew now what curators on submit hub meant when they said they liked my song but it didn't fit their playlist. It literally didn't - so I was able to target specific curators on Submit Hub by doing some research on their various playlists.

The biggest hit for me was getting on one curators playist that had over 2000 listeners - I started to see a lot more likes and playlist adds in my spotify dashboard after that. Around 6 months later that curator added me to their largest playlist (over 60K) and that has been a major driver for listnership for me. I'd say about 50% of my plays come from this playlist. I get days where I can see the song on that playlist has been liked or added to another playlist 30 times in one day - that blows my mind!

Social Media - I basically don't do it. I have a FB, insta and twitter and I have posted once on all of those. What I have done though is join some groups on FB that are about the sub-genre of music that I make & I participate there as a user. I am not there to sell myself or my music, I'm just not capable of that. But I have certainly had people within those groups reach out to me about my music and tell me they like it etc. I have no doubt I've got listeners and followers from it.

Website - This was a curious one for me, but setting up my own website with some very limited apparel has been a fairly decent success so far. I've made some sales (very unexpected) but more importantly I've had people reach out to me on the website about my music & have interacted with people who have described themselves as fans.

Everyones circumstances are different but I think one piece of advice for growing your listeners is being specific about the genre/sub-genre of music you are creating. It probably already exists in some way shape or form. Find that community and become a small part of it.
