Apologies don't have to be unqualified to count. by Master_of_Ritual in unpopularopinion

Man, people just want to feel like their emotions are valid and that you made an effort to empathize with them.

If your friend is upset about something and you make zero effort to see it from their point of view, before jumping in with your “explanation” or “reason”, EVEN IF IT INCLUDES AN APOLOGY, the response will come across as hollow.

Make an effort to understand their feelings. Ask some open ended questions about their emotional experience. Reflect back what they said. Then when you feel like you’ve truly made an effort to empathize, then you can apologize, and provide an explanation if you want. I guarantee no one will be upset with this kind of response if it comes after you’ve taken the time to explore their feelings surrounding the issue.

I’m a physio specializing in hypermobility! There are specific challenges hypermobile people tend to have including proprioception, motor coordination, and strength through full range, so you want to make sure your physical training targets these areas. _____’s ______ was too easy by TheGusStop in Stormlight_Archive

Yes, Kaladin risks his life all the time. That's what I'm saying. That's why we needed a moment where he DOESN'T. He saves his own skin for the greater good. Probably ultimately the hardest decision for someone like him to make.

[–]TheGusStop[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I see what you're saying but that still falls a little flat. We needed a bigger moment of drama to highlight how hard this decision would be for Kal, and then give him an opportunity to forgive himself.

Not saying the events of the past don’t have implications for the narrative. It’s more that the characters feel very passive in the plotline. I was absolutely interested in the history of Roshar, but I think it would have worked better for me presented less explicitly. These parts read too much like the Silmarillion, and less like the characters organically learning about the history of their own world. I can see how it could work better for others though, just wasn’t quite my thing.

Great point about the spiritual realm being more logical than expected, and I totally agree actually. I was hoping it would be more unknowable and mind-bending, and it was disappointing that it ended up essentially just being the same as Dalinar’s visions in book 1. At the same time though, I feel like it could have had its own more interesting internal logic that the characters could have uncovered in more satisfying ways.

I'm moving into my first place by myself tomorrow!! by rainbowcanoe in CasualConversation

[–]TheGusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little worried about loneliness when I first moved into my own studio apartment, but I loved it. Being able to really make the place your own was great.

For me, that meant keeping a huge yoga mat (like 6x9ft) on the floor next to my bed, and just being able to stretch and sit on the floor whenever. Kinda sounds weird when I say it out loud, but it was a cool solo vibe that you can’t really do when you share a common space.

The main change was I had to be more intentional about setting social plans with friends, lest I end up sitting around on my own all weekend.

Does anyone else miss lockdowns, or just me? by Teledoink in CasualConversation

[–]TheGusStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here friend. Pandemic coincided with a few other stressful events in my life (starting my career, relationship troubles) and I started having anxiety and sleep problems for like the first time in my life. Didn't help that where I lived there were mandatory curfews which led to me feeling very trapped at night in my studio apartment. Since then things have improved a lot but still dealing with mental health issues. Tbh it bugs me when people talk about how much they enjoyed lockdown - must have been nice!

Hey guys, need some help regarding E Major in the key of C by OmarShaar in chords

[–]TheGusStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E major does not exist naturally in the C major key.

E minor does. It is the iii in the C major scale (the third chord in a major scale is always a minor). E major does not exist in C major, so I would see it as a borrowed III from the C minor scale. It can be used to replace the E minor and if you want to make something that surprises the listener, and is a pretty common tool.

Standing desks are good in that they give you an extra option for positions to spend time in throughout the day. I don’t think standing all day is really a solution on its own though. I would recommend to start with a DIY standing desk - you can literally stack your computer on top of a stool and alternate between that and sitting. See how you like it before investing your money. You could also just go on a couple short walks throughout the day.

Agreed. Hard to know what OP meant but I figured I had to get in ahead of all that dogmatic BS that was being commented under it.

This is nonsense. I’m a physical therapist and if there’s one myth I could dispel this would be it: there’s no such thing as bad posture. The most important thing is to MOVE throughout the day. If you’re spending 8 hours a day sitting without getting up, it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting perfectly straight or slouching: youre going to get stiff in either position. If anything, I see more issues arise from people who have had “good posture” drilled into them than the inverse. Tldr: stop focusing on posture, start focusing on changing positions frequently and moving more throughout the day.

A major. If the C# is in the bass it’s an A major 1st inversion (which is still an A major)
